I wonder if we can use this to our advantage and obtain sponsorship from some manufacturer of incontinence products?

Timeless Lyrics. Please no Youtube. Just the words. Go with it.
at 22:02 5 Feb 2025

I'm gonna rent myself a house
In the shade of the freeway
Gonna pack my lunch in the morning
And go to work each day
And when the evening rolls around
I'll go on home and lay my body down
And when the morning light comes streaming in
I'll get up and do it again

I want to know what became of the changes
We waited for love to bring
Were they only the fitful dreams
Of some greater awakening?
I've been aware of the time going by
They say in the end it's the wink of an eye
And when the morning light comes streaming in
You'll get up and do it again

Jackson Browne, The Pretender (1976)

In a 1997 interview with Mojo magazine, Browne said of this song: "I'm a big fan of ambiguity and its bountiful rewards, and 'The Pretender' is two things at once. It's that person in all of us that has a higher ideal, and the part that has settled for compromise - like Truffaut says, there's the movie you set out to make, and there's the one you settle for. But in a more serious way, 'The Pretender' is about '60s idealism, the idea of life being about love and brotherhood, justice, social change and enlightenment, those concepts we were flooded with as our generation hit its stride; and how, later, we settled for something quite different. So when I say 'Say a prayer for The Pretender,' I'm talking about those people who are trying to convince themselves that there really was nothing to that idealism."

penalty in the lead-up to Colback's goal?
at 10:25 5 Feb 2025

If we hadn't scored I wonder if the ref might not have given a penalty because Yang made it look a bit theatrical?

Film 2025
at 20:26 14 Jan 2025

@simmo 'have you seen / would you recommend The Host or Memories of Murder? I have been working my way through asian recommendations and Bong Joon Ho especially, and these are supposed to be his best.'

I would definitely recommend Memories of Murder (2003). The film shows how the power of the South Korean state hampered the investigation of a series of murders. After all, if you can speedily extract confessions, what need is there for investigation? The only flaw in this method being that the murders continued. An interesting footnote to the film is that the killer was identified in 2019.

The thing that strikes me about the table at the moment is that, in terms of points, no one (even Plymouth) is cut adrift.

Glad to hear all is OK.

Just listened to the last Open All R's podcast (the one with Sam Field) yesterday. Some fairly optimistic predictions about the Preston game (correct) and the Swansea game (incorrect).

Most dramatic fall
at 14:36 18 Dec 2024

Some recency bias here, but one of the worst things about the season before last (the Beale/Critchley/Ainsworth season) wasn't so much the non-performance of Beale's cohort, as the loss of form of formerly reliable players like Johansen and Dickie.

Mel Johnson Interview - now on the Patreon

Thanks for that.

You and Mel seemed like two peas in a pod with your knowledge of players that we bought and players that we missed out on.

I thought that, despite all the details, Mel's method of actually selecting a player remained quite mysterious. The days of the scout as craftsman seem to be drawing to a close. Maybe it's too labour-intensive.

Agree we need him to hold up the ball. I wonder if he should just focus on improving that one aspect of his game and forget about everything else (like scoring goals, which seems an impossible mountain to climb).

Special mention for Springsteen's Streets of Philadelphia which doubles as a song about both alienation and illness:

I was bruised and battered
I couldn't tell what I felt
I was unrecognizable to myself
Saw my reflection in a window
And didn't know my own face

At night I could hear the blood in my veins
Just as black and whispering as the rain
On the streets of Philadelphia
