FIFA World Cup thread. 12:02 - Nov 15 with 139354 views | Snipper | I’m trying to get excited about this World Cup, but to no avail :-((. I’ve just watched Sky Sports World Cup preview with Gary Neville, Jamie Redknapp, Jamie Carragher & Karen Carney. Utterly depressing viewing. Same old, same old. Picking players for the starting XI not playing for their clubs, or totally off form. I’m hoping this thread can get the juices flowing. Do any of you think England have a chance?

FIFA World Cup thread. on 20:56 - Nov 25 by DWQPR | Hopefully Southgate will walk after this tournament. Get a coach that realises our strength is going forward. He creates the tempo of the team and to be quite frank watching England is dull. |
I hope he stays, if for no other reason than not having to read about Beale being linked with the job.

We’ll probably lose 3-0 and finish 2nd in the group.

Maybe it’s my dislike for all things Chelsea but I just don’t see it with Mount. I thought he was anonymous tonight and I couldn’t believe he played the full 90+ mins with Foden sat on the bench. What am I missing?

I'm pretty sure that if Scandinavian fans rocked up in Lansdowne Road dressed in Viking helmets it wouldn't raise an eyebrow. Unless that was all they were wearing. I think that's what I find funny about it. That, and the Crusader in full kit trudging away meekly. There's something Pythonesque about it all. |

I've said it before but he'll probably end up with 80 or 90 caps and you'll be scratching your heads as to how and why and remember what he ever did. In an England shirt he's Fat Frank Mk II and that isn't a compliment.

seriously... ? If Mount is the answer, what on earth is the question? It's so sad that Eze is nowhere near this team... he's exactly what they need, someone so comfortable on the ball and effortlessly breezing into space.. Mason Mount is a terrible Joe Cole who was crap... that was the most uninspiring thing since the last time I watched them.

Didn’t say he was the answer did I. I just said he was one of the better players today in a team that played shit. I still would have played Foden.

I just don't see it with him. With a name like that you'd think everything would start with him but instead it just falls by the wayside. Mason Scree would be a more appropriate name for him. I can only assume Foden was injured because Scree has brought nothing to the desert thus far. The Yanks must be sat there wondering why they aren't on six points.

Germany drawing their second game v the mighty Ghana in 2014 after their a good first win Spain losing their first game to Switzerland in 2010 Italy drawing their second game of the group stage v USA in 2006 It'll be alright, its tournament football. We did the defensive stuff fine, Pickford had nothing to do. We'll get out the groups and then progress through the knockout stages much like we did at the Euros and the World cup previous. He’s one of those academy transitional players that run neither hot nor cold but have good position stats. A sort of Tom Carroll. Netherlands full of them which is why they are dull as dishwater so far.

Fair enough but he didn't do anything, like literally offered nothing whatsoever. It's so, so sad that we have a coach that has a tactical blind spot of not being able to change anything and one that would consider Conor Gallagher over Ebereche Eze which is criminal. Eze is exactly what this team is lacking, positive, forward thinking play, rather than Mount's running around headless amd Grealish's looking for fouls constantly...

This. France were poor starters last time and didn't really get going until they were losing v Argentina. After that never looked back. Italy didn't win a group game in 82. Nobody is great all through a tournament. Closest I can recall is Germany in 1990 but even they stuttered through the semi final and final. I'd actually be more concerned if we'd scored six again in terms of peaking too early. That said, I do worry about Southgate and his conservatism, always picking Mount etc. We can't have this generation of players wasted by this sort of approach.
FIFA World Cup thread. on 23:09 - Nov 25 with 1948 views | charmr | Crying out for someone to come and take the ball off the back four. Can’t expect Stones and Maguire to play hoddle type passes forward. Huge part of the game now getting through the lines and getting over the half way line creating overloads and getting in behind. Backwards and sideways with little movement looking to receive and turn from our back line. Difference between the 2 teams and what areas the game was played in I thought. Watched the game in Baltimore in a bar adjourned with every type of Spurs scarf. Not as busy as I thought it would be but still busy. Thought US played well and to their strengths. Very pacey athletic team like a lot of youth teams here. Typical f ing overboard US rhetoric pre game. Fox sports couldn’t get their tongues any further up the Qataris backside if they tried. The English studio guest Kelly Smith simply mimicked all the yap yap yap she’d heard all day with puppet hands telling the US audience that to the English it was just another game. That tw at Alexi Lalas was talking as if he was sending the troops out and over the trenches. So many texts from friends mentioning some revolutionary war or something beforehand. Amusing if somewhat predictable though. Performance was good for US soccer helping getting the monkey of their back about their place in the world of soccer. Also discovered a non alcoholic IPA as well, went down well with the Mac and cheese. A nice way to spend an afternoon with the wife on our 11 year anniversary. [Post edited 25 Nov 2022 23:39]

Who would youi get in? I'd agree whatever happens this tournament I think he goes afterwards but I don't see an obvious english replacement unless we look abroad again Overall so poor tonight, midfield very static and the subs were bizarre, how Foden didn't get on was beyond me, Rashford again as a right winger, come on thats nonsense
FIFA World Cup thread. on 23:45 - Nov 25 with 1867 views | ManinBlack | We have been pretty poor overall in the Nations League and today was in similar vain. I accept that we were rubbish against Scotland in the Euros and we got to the final and we have examples of others like Argentina losing to Cameroon but still getting to the 1990 final. It is just we were so slow and boring to watch today rather like Holland. I guess time will tell and it is better to finish the tournament strongly than starting really well. I just expected more after getting 6 in the first game. I hope we we were saving a bit of energy for Wales but a win today would have meant giving others a run out and resting a few.
FIFA World Cup thread. on 00:17 - Nov 26 with 1817 views | JamesB1979 | Completely overrun in midfield. We seem to have Bellingham and Rice….then Mount seems to be at times ahead of Kane and the 2 wide players. Not sure what plan is but playing a 424 seems a bit too attacking for me against a decent U.S. side. How Foden doesn’t get some time is beyond me. As always some players rise when they play internationals and others look lost. Maguire has proved Southgate right but Mount for me always goes missing.

Foden should have started today because the US back line is very slow and he would run them ragged . Once half time arrived and the US were going to do a repeat of the Wales game slow down or vanish in the second half Southgate missed his chance. Putting on Henderson was settling for a draw IMO which is fine if they beat Wales but Foden and Grealish should start there and maybe Rashford instead of Harry who looked bad. I was wrong about Maguire fair play to him he was brilliant in both games so far
FIFA World Cup thread. on 05:30 - Nov 26 with 1631 views | Wilkinswatercarrier | The game reminded me of QPR at our worst. Very pedestrian on the ball, long balls from the back line as no one in midfield willing to take the ball and break the line. Same issue, neither England or the Rs can deal with a team that presses the midfield area.

Good comparison. I was also reminded of QPR with all the backwards and sideways passing. It felt like a team set up not to lose rather than the attacking side we saw vs Iran. I’m hoping that Southgate is trying to keep the handbrake on to an extent to avoid peaking too soon. Hopefully we’ll be more attacking vs Wales as they are there for the taking. Foden has to start imo.
