Warbs & the defence 16:55 - Jan 21 with 3155 viewsWestbourneR

Credit where credit is due - Warburton was getting a lot of justified criticism for how ridiculously leaky were but to be fair there has been an incredible improvement in that department. Gritty clean sheets and low scores against for a little while now.

Still think we're vulnerable in the air but I think Barbet is poor in that area.

Not just the 5 at the back - midfield better at protecting them and Dykes and now Austin do their bit at set pieces as well.

Since the pathetic showing at Huddersfield where we seemed to be in a spiral of regularly conceding two a game, just six goals conceded in eight games with three clean sheets.

Yep credit where it’s due , Warburton has them organised at the back and I never thought I would mutter that sentence
A lot of that is down to having a keeper that is decent, nothing worse playing as a defender knowing your keeper has a mistake in him , confidence is a good thing and it’s starting to spread throughout the side, long may it continue

And Bowles is onside, Swinburne has come rushing out of his goal , what can Bowles do here , onto the left foot no, on to the right foot That’s there that’s two, and that’s Bowles Brian Moore

With much talk about 45 goals being taken out of team last summer (which is is closer to 60 when you add in Hall, Manning and now BOS), and replacing them with players who are...er less prolific, having a defence that would concede in excess of 70 was never going to be sustainable. Last year we conceded approx 1.66 goals per game and scored 1.5 goals per game. This season, we are just shy of scoring a goal per game and conceding 1.25 per game. This is a significant reduction and credit due to all involved, especially when three out of the back five are newcomers to Championship football.

It is a significant improvement, and credit is due for it (I agree that Dieng's form is probably the biggest factor - let's not forget he did more than anyone to secure us the points last night against, whatever Warbs 'they're very good at what they do' broken record said, a poor Cardiff side), but the deterioration in our goalscoring remains, I'm afraid, even more significant. Unless Charlie, Dykes, Bonne and Chair can really start rustling the onion bag, I fear we're likely to remain somewhere around, uh, 16th. There are one or two more promising signs now at least.

Poll: What points will we get from our 'Festive 3' (Swansea A, Norwich A, Watford H)?

Playing 3 Centre Halves with Wing Backs has helped and despite our lack of a left sided wing back with any note, now BOS has done the inevitable, then i believe that Wallace will come in on that side as although he doesnt have a trick he could get up and down alright and think thats what Warbs is hoping.

Nico although i hope he will be ok for us as he has a good engine, just doesnt want to take the responsibility of keeping hold of the ball or attacking into the space, carrying the ball. Maybe its because he is young and doesnt want to make a mistake, but he needs to start owning the ball when he has it and not look at the earliest option to give it away. Hopefully a player in there somewhere for us.

When Warbs says 'they're very good at what they do' about the opposition, he really means: 'they play agricultural hoof-ball which we should be able to beat easily but I can't say that in interviews'. Also should give 'with respect' and 'respectfully' a rest. Yes, don't underestimate the other team but also try to avoid talking total see-through nonsense.

Something I was noticing last night was we look a lot more comfortable playing it out from the back, so less cock ups to suddenly have to scramble and defend.

Partly down to having Dickie alongside the others, with the rest down to practice I'd guess.

I don't think MW has ever been the problem. It strikes me that he's doing the best with what he's got to work with.

Or is it that Nico is trying to play the ball forward quickly, as he has been told to, and sometimes losing the accuracy or on other occasions having his intentions read by the opposition and they are intercepting?

He does sometimes play decent and half decent balls in to the attackers. Just lacks consistency. Maybe it will come with championship experience.

Would love to see what Warbs could do if he put as much effort into building a grinding, tough, results team after spending years on the all-out attack.

He’s only really been pissing about with it for three games but it’s definitely working.

Dieng and Dickie have to take huge plaudits though, both of them have been outstanding for a while now. If only they’d been in last years team
