Todays hornets game postponed 10:35 - Feb 9 with 5969 views | Dalenet | Today's game postponed due to the weather. Not surprised and will help the pitch. But apparently it is under water and the referee said it was unplayable [Post edited 9 Feb 2020 10:37]

Todays hornets game postponed on 12:38 - Feb 9 with 4528 views | mingthemerciless | I played amateur football for TBA in the old Manchester Industrial League and lots of the pitches were in better condition than that at this time of the year. It looks very, very sandy. Several Hornets players had a sort of gravel rash on their knees after going to ground following the Oldham game. Sliding tackles would be hazardous for footballers. If Tranmere are smart they'll be training on Blackpool beach next week.

Todays hornets game postponed on 14:04 - Feb 9 with 4357 views | 49thseason | Is anyone ever going to get to grips with the obviously inadequate drainage at COA? These problems have been going on for years and £100s of thousands have been spent on the top 12 inches or so but there is little evidence that they have attempted to put an effective drainage system in place before spending all that money. Do the companies that do the pitch renovations have any idea how wet it is in Rochdale?

If the club really wanted to sort the problem out they’d probably have to demolish the sandy lane end & totally dig up the pitch. Then put drainage trenches in from the Pearl at end sloping down & out of the ground & into the main drain on sandy lane (which would mean a part or whole road closure). Finally lay a modern composite pitch which can withstand 50 games spread over the football & rugby league season. Oh, then rebuild the sandy. Cost would be millions.

And how much has been spent trying to solve the problem without getting to the root cause of the problem? £400k last year alone allegedly. If they did dig trenches from the Pearl St end down both sides, couldnt they also dig another across the front of the Sandy as a continuation of the Main stand side trench and pour both sides into the existing outlet into the main drain which I think is in the corner of Wilbutts and Sandy lane? It might need some changes in the connection to the main drain but its a simpler solution and probably much easier to maintain

If that would solve the problem. I didn’t say I wasn’t in favour of major surgery, I was pointing out the logistical & cost implications. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

I think that's the sort of ground work that will be needed if the pitch is ever going to be playable in winter again.

it would keep the rain off the playing surface, but the water still has to go somewhere and if the drains are goosed it cant get away. Ultimately the best solution might be to lift the entire pitch by about 12-18 inches.

WOW. That will take a lot of volunteers. On the count of 3........
Todays hornets game postponed on 08:27 - Feb 10 with 3629 views | DaleiLama | It would be good to get a definitive position from the club on this issue. They have consulted often enough with experts. Question for the forum? Is it simply too expensive to do the job properly, so we have to go for the "putting lipstick on a pig" option every summer? Its bad enough watching some of our footy on a reasonable pitch, but if we get another "porridge" pitch like the one we played Lincoln on before the Spurs Cup game, BBM is going to have to look at his tactics.

Todays hornets game postponed on 08:41 - Feb 10 with 3607 views | dawlishdale | I'm sure that John Smallwood gave quite a detailed talk on the pitch and drainage issues at a recent fans forum. Basically, one half of the pitch is well drained, but the drains on the Main Stand side don't reach the touchline, and thus, it's always this side where we get the most problems. I think the width of the pitch was reduced in an effort to sort this out, but it's clearly just rearranging the deckchairs on the Titanic. He said it would cost £1m or so to fix. Perhaps this is one of the reasons why the club has been "frugal" with the record monies we've been getting over the last year or so. Hopefully, it will be covered in the forthcoming presentation by the club. If it isn't , then serious questions need to be asked.

I understand the powers that be are aware of this aspect of the problem and it's under consideration. As is having a slight crown or camber to aid with drainage.
Todays hornets game postponed on 13:38 - Feb 10 with 3402 views | 442Dale | Accrington completely did their pitch and drains in the summer. Their chairman said it cost “£300k any less was a waste of time. We tried all sorts of ‘quick fixes’ one at a cost of £75k You live and you learn.....” Over the summer there was consistent coverage of the work being done, from beginning to end, There were pictures of how well it held up to the storm this weekend. If that’s the sort of cost, it’s well worth enquiring further with them about what they had done and who did it.

Just seen that Hornets have arranged their home game to be played at Salford on Sunday. No confidence that COA will be playable - or we have said the pitch won't take it. Tranmere game must be in doubt?

Or the pitch is less likely to be playable after a week of bad weather and a game being played on it the day before?

Our game on Saturday must surely be in serious doubt already? Given the awful weather, you'd think there would be some news from the club.
