Ms. Abbott, it's not because you are a woman...... on 13:05 - Feb 15 by londonlisa2001 | You believe that the States has an issue with ignoring policy in favour of game show, popularity driven politics on the left? |
Identity politics, certainly Lisa. I mean, people patted themselves on the back for Obama being elected, "first black President". True equality means that statement would never have been made or considered. Same with Hillary. Wanted "first female President" meaning better candidates on the Democrat side lost out - and frankly imo if they'd had say Sanders against Trump there would be a different President today. Trump certainly rode the game show, popularity driven "I'm not like them" politics but the Democrats made it a lot easier for him by wanting a candidate based upon identity politics rather than actual ability.

Ms. Abbott, it's not because you are a woman...... on 12:40 - Feb 15 by snork44 | There have been great left leaning female polititians in the Labour Party, Barbara Castle and Mo Mowlem spring to mind and they must be spinning in their graves at the caliber of female polititians now! The likes of Abbott, Harriett Harman and Yvette Cooper are all sub-standard and not very intelligent. The situation is worse over here in the States where you have cretins like Nancy Pelosi and Elizabeth Warren (to quote Jamie Lee Curtis in a 'Fish called Wanda') ' who are so stupid, that to call them stupid would be an insult to stupid people !' If you put Pelosi and Warran together in an empty room, you wouldn't have one functioning brain cell between them. |
Cooper - first class degree from Oxford (Balliol), Kennedy Scholarship to study at Harvard and a masters degree at LSE; Abbott - Newnham College, Cambridge; Harman - QC. There's only one there I have any time for, but not very intelligent? Rightio, Einstein.

You might want to read what is written and not what you perceive to be ;) "Identity politics" over policy on the left, yes, as I stated. And politics has become in general (as mentioned) more a popularity contest, as proven by who were in charge of the parties, with the identity driven candidate Clinton ("....because I'm a woman"). Popularity over policy. So, I stand by what I said.

Ms. Abbott, it's not because you are a woman...... on 12:51 - Feb 15 by londonlisa2001 | And when she does it, it's also wrong. And if Davis had made a comment about her ideals, or lack of them, that's fine. But he didn't. He quite clearly referenced the way she looks. That's unacceptable. And is the reason for the apology that's been issued as well. As I said, it's really not difficult. |
Actually, "I'm not blind" in this case, could mean many things. He's not blind to her bigotry could easily have been the case. If I were him, I wouldn't have had my aide to issue an apology, I would have doubled down, "I said "I'm not blind" because I do not wish to consort with someone as bigoted and hypocritical as her". So, it really isn't unacceptable what he said.

Really depends on how you assess intelligence. Knowledge in one field may not transmit well into others. I used to teach a kid, lovely friendly lad, he was hardly blessed with intelligence, his results were bang average at best, but due to family contacts, had a place in Cambridge. He is now a Barrister which frightens the hell out of me. [Post edited 15 Feb 2017 13:23]

Trump is the most game show, popularity driven 'politician' that could possibly exist. To pretend that Hillary Clinton, who studied political science at Wellesley, law at Yale, had a distinguished legal career, was US Senator for 8 years, Secretary of State for 4 years was somehow unqualified to stand as candidate for the Presidency and call it identity politics is simply ridiculous and, to be frank, your attempts to draw a parallel between her and Trump in terms of their ability to do the role does you no favours. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

So it's not based on misogyny and sexism then, as the piece alludes to, just that she is pig ugly. So the argument shifts from her stance, nothing to do with her being a female, just looking like a bulldog licking p-iss off a nettle?

How convenient. But it's very rare even if true on this occasion. And Abbott probably didn't secure her place at Cambridge due to family contacts, unless her welder Dad and Nurse Mum had some odd associates.

She'd have helped to meet a quota of sorts to have gained entry. I'm not saying that to be rude or crude, having seen and heard the woman regularly over the last three decades, Lisa, an argument to say she succeeded through academic attainment and intellectual rigour simply rings hollow.

True, but book smart does not always transfer to general intelligence. My central point of the post. The example was just an anecdotal story.

Actually I have read the messages on display by Davis, and the apology now, fully, and not sure it does mention anything about her appearance, only what people have implied. As for the point made, they might get more comments on appearance, often by other women, but it does not make it sexist or "misogynist" (something she claimed in the interview) commenting on someones looks. Women tend to get more upset by it than men, thus it does not have the same effect on the males when it is done, hence why it is done less in that case. [Post edited 15 Feb 2017 13:52]

Seems Abbott has a complaint for everything. Sexism, misogynistic, racist....almost as if she was narcissistic enough to not accept any culpability for her own actions. Read an interview she gave years ago, where she accepted she played up in school but blamed it on being the only "black" girl in the class so the teacher may not have known how to handle her... I'd also say a lot of comments on womens appearances come from other women - who can be incredibly bitchy and catty. It'd thus a double standard to call out men as "sexist" or "misogynistic" for doing so whilst not applying similar terminology towards women indulging in the same activities.
