Couldn't agree more. It would be nice if people resisted the urge to speculate/stir up trouble before we have any idea of people's motives.

I know you know it is, you old devil. I just think calling a bloke by a stage name is a bit weird, when they're not a singer or an actor or something. But if his followers want to call him 'Tommy' rather than 'Steve' then that's up to them.

I'm not on twitter, but can anyone confirm whether Nigel Farage has shared his thoughts on the rioting in Southport last night, with a violent mob travelling in from outside the local area to attack the emergency services and a place of worship? It's a shame Stephen Yaxley-Lennon is on the run, because after sharing his thoughts on the trouble in Harehills the other week, I have no doubt he would have been up there expressing his horror at the mindless violence and attacks on the police from er, people reported to be chanting his name (probably undercover MI5 officers or something, eh).

Orange wine

I was going to do that, but then thought I'd get my wine broker, Johann, to post something on the subject. I think he provided an excellent overview of orange wine, but do let us know if you have any questions. And please remember, you don't have to spend a fortune on wine to get something very drinkable; there are some very nice bottles available around the £200-225 mark these days.

I always quite enjoyed Peppa Pig - there are a few funny characters in it, and you can't go wrong with Brian Blessed. Mr Bull digging up the road - gets quoted every time we encounter traffic/road works. Good times.

We had about 6 weeks of Paw Patrol in our house - that is a genuinely grim watch. Doesn't even look good or teach the kids any valuable lessons. No redeeming features at all.

We were pretty relaxed about TV. Lying in bed with my son at 04:22, I would be counting down the minutes until CBeebies started and it's one of the reasons I would throw myself in front of a tank for the BBC. There's loads of stuff on there which is stimulating, educational and fun. We generally tried to watch TV with him, and talk with him about what was going on in the programmes he liked, but we have 100% also used it for bursts when we had to get stuff done without him.

We avoided commercial channels, because seeing that in action at family and friends, you get 3 mins TV before an hour of adverts and a kid with a shopping list a mile long. Watching programmes that you can both enjoy is great and I can definitely see how our son's humour and drawings have been influenced by some of his favourites. We've been really enjoying 'Teen Titans Go!' and it's lovely to sit there together laughing at the same things. We both loved "Hey Duggee' and 'Storybots'.

I think it comes down to what they're watching and whether it's absolute pap or something that will help with their development. Now our son is older, we watch quite a bit of comedy stuff like 'Would I lie to you' together; any innuendo goes over his head, and he goes to football every week, so I'm not worried about the odd swear word. We also always used to have a YouTube music video party every weekend, so that was a fair chunk of tv.

Something I found bonkers, was one of our neighbours had a 10 mins tv rule per day for their kid, which inevitably meant turning the tv off midway through a programme, every day. Daily meltdowns with a 4-5 year old until they yielded and moved to one whole tv programme per day.

Very true about the smile. Also, the period where they go absolutely nuts with excitement when you walk through the door after a day at work, is the most beautiful display of unconditional love that you'll ever experience without owning a dog!

Congratulations - I hope you're all doing okay.

Those early days are unbelievably knackering. We had to bottle feed our son, which meant that I was able to chip in with feeds - I would clock-off at 10:30pm Sun - Thu, and then do the overnight on Saturday and Sunday (I had to be up just gone 5am for work). My advice would be:

Sleep - we had the luxury of having a double bed in our spare bedroom, which was to become our son's bedroom. We had his cot in there from the day he came home, and one of us would sleep in there with him for overnight feeds and have him in the bed with us in there if he needed soothing during the night. As he got older and transferred from his moses basket to his cot, we would just lie next to him and soothe him through his cot bars, which worked most of the time, and if it didn't, have him in the bed with us. We generally found that whoever was still kipping in our bedroom, managed to get a decent nights sleep, which made a huge difference. I would 100% advocate one of you sleeping whilst the other one is sat up with the child at night, otherwise you end up with two permanently knackered parents, and it's tough enough with one of you in that state.

We have always had a policy of if our son wants us in the night, he calls out to us and we go in with him and lie with him until he's nodding off again or feels reassured if he's worrying about something. Even though you've had a disrupted sleep, you're back in your bed before too long and can go back to sleep. Friends of ours who had their kids come downstairs or into their parents bed whenever they can't sleep/have had a nightmare etc, and their kids are still doing it at 5-6. Fu ck that. Once your kid's in your bed, probably lying horizontally, you're stuffed.

I'm a big fan of setting boundaries, sticking to them, and I will always explain my stance on something.

Saying sorry - when I've lost my temper/over-reacted, I always apologise to my son and chat about what we both might have done to stop me being a shouty t wat. I think it's important to acknowledge when you've been a knob.

Other than that, put your phone down (I'm sh it at that), and give your kid as much time as you can. Being a dad to my son has been the single most magical experience of my life. It's a lot of hard work, but unbelievably rewarding, and in my experience, it just gets better and better with time. Good luck, have fun and be super kind to your wife.

Was it a vigil in remembrance of 3 murdered people or a protest? Genuine question.

Thankfully, the soldier who was attacked should survive, but if he had lost his life, then I reckon you would have seen the same public reaction that we saw when Lee Rigby was murdered.

Apologies for the Guardian link, but this does seem to suggest the bloke who murdered the 3 people in Nottingham had very serious, long term mental health issues: https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2024/jan/24/nottingham-attacks-missed-opport

Copper boots someone in the head on video (which many people will have watched without context, but even with context, public servants can’t be kicking people in the face and stamping on heads) – the obvious place to demonstrate if you disagree with coppers booting people in the head, is outside a police station/City hall.

Random bloke stabs a member of the armed forces for unknown/unconfirmed reasons and is arrested soon after. I’m not sure what a demonstration in those circumstances would be looking to achieve or where would be an obvious place to hold it.

Championship ticket prices
at 13:10 24 Jul 2024

West Ham and us are locked in an arms race to see which mid-table London club can get tourists to pay the most money to watch a game. Our match-by-match prices are insane, but great to see West Ham rising to the challenge, especially when watching them means watching the game in a slightly weird athletics stadium, tacked onto a shopping centre, that takes an hour to get away from. Fair play.

It can't be long before we see overseas tourists having a priority window, and then the crap local fans who don't each spend £400 in the club shop on their visit, maybe allowed to purchase any unsold tickets on the day if they commit to spend at least £50 in the club shop. Obviously with no concessions. Blimey, I remember clubs in the 80's giving concessions to the unemployed - the last people you'd want in a PL stadium these days!

I think it's a bit like where we found ourselves in the 80's. Football violence leading to lots of fans staying away and dads not taking their kids. Stadiums that often haven't had any work done on them in decades, a loss of prestige with other European leagues overtaking them, and having spoken with quite a few people who stopped going to games in countries where there were high profile cases of match-fixing, I suspect that's not been an insignificant factor in declining attendances/revenue.

I was at a Rome derby last season, thoughand it was noticeable how many more families were then that at Italian games I attended in the past. Police seemed a lot more on top of things too.

Looked at from an outsider's viewpoint, you could argue that City have a much bigger, more impressive ground, an impressive training ground, bigger crowds, and have had several young players come through their academy and go on to play in the Premier League in recent years. He also knows O'Leary, Knight, and Sykes from the RoI squads. He'll pocket a nice signing-on fee and a bump in pay too. Plus Bristol's a nice part of the world. I don't think it's a completely weird move.

City are in the same situation with Tommy Conway, who has a year left on his contract, and who's been at City since he was nine. Club offered him a reportedly hefty pay rise, and it was rejected without any attempts at negotiating. He's now training with the U-21's as Manning doesn't want distractions and Conway has made it clear he wants to go.

Figure being reported locally by journo and fans who are usually itk is £1.25m + £1m in add-ons. Not sure how they convinced him to go along with this effort:

Being reported in the local paper that City and Rangers have agreed a £2m fee. Tinnion, the DOF at City, was saying recently how City's forwards have all been a bit samey since Semenyo left, and that they were looking to add someone similar.

Semenyo had loads of power and pace, but his finishing often let him down in his first few years in and around the 1st team. He's ended up being a really decent player, and I guess City are hoping that with similar physical attributes, they can help Sinclair progress in the same way.

You have to love sports administrators: "Gates are at their highest since 1952, away supports are up almost across the board despite high ticket prices and travel costs, and non-league crowds are up at many clubs...things are looking good. How can we sustain this?"

"What if we moved all the kick-off times to times when it meant getting on the road at 6am or getting home at 1am, or people having to book time off work and stay overnight? What if games were played out in near silence at lunchtime? Maybe we could organise for games to clash with kids football? And stick all the games on TV, so that anyone thinking, ''Do I really want to spend £150 on Preston away?' decides to watch it from their sofa?"

"Yes! Let's fu cking do it!"

Still, at least we know that clubs won't just spunk the extra TV money up the curtains.

The TV camera films you in the crowd and....
at 08:59 10 Jul 2024

The weirdest thing is when the camera pans in on a couple of fans, both close to tears because they're losing/going out the cup/getting relegated, then they spot they're on the big screen, and giddy with excitement, start waving, smiling, and bouncing around. Bit odd that, but happens all the time.

Got him a bit of coverage, though, which is a struggle for Lib Dem's anyway, but especially with Farage on the scene again. And being an absolute clown was always cited as a reason that a lot of people liked Johnson.
