I think he surpasses Warburton by a long way.
Two things will make his departure easier for me if/when it happens:
1) Goes for as much £ as possible
2) We have replacements lined up. We should have a shortlist of 3/4 managers ready to go st all times. |

To my mind, Cifuentes has saved us from relegation two years in a row. A couple of million - at the very most - of compensation will be no compensation if he were to leave and we're back with incompetent owners and administrators
Replacements lined up? I'm not confident in that either. Ferdinand put Cifuentes on our radar, he's gone, and he was also overruled many times by the same owners we have now. |  |

Hope for the best but plan for the worst would seem to sum it up for me.
I think Marti has improved many aspects of the club, especially some of the players, so he would leave it in a much better condition than he inherited it - on the pitch and in training, at least. Culturally too, although that is extremely hard to quantify.
In theory, that makes it much easier to transition to a similar manager/coach. Smoother to transition if the DoF role was occupied by someone who oversaw the transition, but I don’t think we will see one of those again whilst CN is CEO, so any change is going to be managed by him.
The next issue is player retention and acquisition pre and post change, especially if a new manager/coach requires budget to deliver and wants a say in the policy and the system we should play. It also effects preseason massively if we get the timing wrong.
I’m not sure many good managers would take the job without a lot of reassurances so it would require finding another with potential to fulfil.
I imagine that’s a shortlist at best to begin with because everyone is looking for the same profile - look at some of this seasons Prem recruitment for managers.
Succession really is a massive challenge for any role but given our circumstances and Marti’s relationship with fans, I imagine it’s severely problematic.

I remember reading Gary Waddock once saying that the biggest piece of advice he'd give to burgeoning footballers is to always be aware of what you want to do with the ball before you receive it.
Sounds simple, but in practice a lot harder to achieve in reality, particularly the higher up the ladder you go. And that's the sort of skill that separates great players from good players, and good players from average players. And average players from bad ones, and even the bad ones are miles better than Sunday league cloggers like I was! |
Wise words, but can also be described as ‘reading the game’ which all comes from experience and repetition.
On that theme, I remember Holloway saying that you always have more time on the ball than you think. That really stuck with me and always keep that in mind when playing - at the level I play at this is definitely true, haha

I think it’s really interesting that Marti can interview with the national
Press but not attend a fans forum.
If I recall correctly, that canned contract extension video with Xavi revealed several wry smiles between the two, so you’d imagine they’d got what they wanted at the time and probably kept some of their other opportunities open for later.

I made the comment on one of Clive's Patreon pods - might have been end of last season - that whilst we don't want to overextend ourselves financially or risk too much too soon, we have to weigh that against the limited opportunity Marti gives us as manager.
We shouldn't waste these years, because imo he's top 2 in this division and the best we've had since Warnock, so won't be around for as long as we'd like. So far no other club with means has been savvy enough to come and get him, but it will happen at some point, and the board won't want to see him go wishing they did more for him. |
Agree. I'm holding out the hope that if we're able to continue to improve the squad next season he may want to give it another year. Unless a PL offer comes in, in which case that'll be that.
And to beat that dead horse again, some of that might depend on Palace shifting Eze for a reasonable sum (with the previous £60m stuff looking unlikely based on this season).

I agree.
The problem for us mere mortals is that to be able to know what we are going to do with the ball next we have to trust our touch and passing. If our touch deserts us (again!) and we can't set oursleves for the first or even second-time pass, the moment is long gone and then all we can hope to do is pass backwards or sideways.
By the time most of us know how to really read a game as we play it, and gain a bit of touch, and gain enough confidence and composure to move the ball quickly, the legs have gone!
It's why most people who haven't played football think it's a simple or easy game. It's not. The best players are really incredible. Even semi-pro players are streets ahead of us mere mortals. |
There used to be a guy who played down the park with us, who would just, week in week out, run rings around everyone. He had a trial for Aldershot. We all thought he was going to ace it. He didn't pass the trial. That's when I realised just how good footballers are at all levels. |  | | |
