His sub appearance today was great though wasn’t it? If only for that superb bit of skill on the left wing taking two Watford players out of the game????
He’s getting a lot more awareness of the Championship and showing better and better game smarts as we go. He’ll make mistakes but he’s got a good attitude and shows great endeavour.
I’m not 100% sold yet but I’m now filing him in the column of probably a successful signing by the club. |  |

I like him. Think there is a lot of potential there.
But tonight I thought he had a very strange game. Did some weird, brain dead stuff. Twice turned down moving forward with the ball into space in order to turn around and then get caught in possession trying to play it backwards. Also overhit backwards passes, one over the top of the back 2 and one towards the corner flag. He made a couple of silly fouls. All in all I thought he looked a bit mentally tired.
He’s played a lot and is new to the league so it’s not surprise and something we should expect. I still think he’s growing into the role, the level, and the league.
He’s been good, not great, but good so far. And you can see there is promise of more. |
I thought he was fantastic again last night but agree that the turning backwards when at times it is actually far simpler to go forwards into space is something he can improve. He has a wonderful touch, which is such an asset playing his position as it gives him that extra second to win the ball. |  | | |

I thought his forward play was excellent against Plymouth, but it fell off a bit last night. Would guess that Plymouth didn't press anywhere near as well and he had a bit more time on the ball, so hopefully he'll continue to improve as he's certainly capable of it. | | | |

Yeah one point in the second half where he had acres of space to turn and run clear in their half, he turned back and lost the ball!

Yes, the pitch looked very poor last night, the grass looked dead down the middle, Varanne looks class to me, lovely close control, tight spots don't seem to bother him, it really takes the pressure off the back four, ( and he seems to have sorted out his Psychopath tendency).

He has grown immensely! I do really like him. I see a few posts harkening back to the epic Gary Waddock displays and I see this 'terrier' element in him. Even when we were insipid and tame he was at least chasing after the ball. His assist for Smythe was sublime, as was his goal v Leicester. I’m not his biggest fan at all but I’ll admit he did have a good game tonight. However in the second half he had so much room to move into under no pressure that he couldn’t help but look far better than he does in different playing conditions. He did ping a couple of nice balls about which was nice to see a bit of variety in his passing rather than his usual pass it back to the person that’s just passed to him. [Post edited 14 Feb 22:33]

He's got aggression, anticipation, heading, and the big switch. Needs to add one-two touch triangles, finding and wanting space to receive the ball, driving forward with the ball, long shooting (the one he got was phenomenal), and slide-rule through balls. I think he can do it. |  | | |

Why bring Madsen into this thread, its a Varanne thread. Totally blinkered view of Madsen BTW, he played 2/3 decent balls around, one not so good, got in good positions, defended well late in game to defend giving a corner awa - watch without blinkers and you will see much more. He's getting better going forward IMO . Earlier on in the season he was a bit like a deer in headlights when he got the ball and sort of stuttered with it now he drives forward a bit more .
As the kids would say he's got a great profile and hopefully he continues to improve. | | | |
