Quickest ever player to represent Colchester United?
at 09:35 23 Sep 2024

I’m not certain the U’s have ever run time trials, but Mick Mahon was no slouch. That being said, watching Owura literally just run past right backs with ease is hilarious to watch.

Three valuable points for the Super U's against Adkin's Rovers

Talking about their connection, Samson’s run across the ball to take the defenders away from Lyle for the second was masterful.

Great post-match interview with Lyle - a leader on and off the pitch.

Indeed, but you appear to be somewhat critical (derogatory even) of him doing his job? I don't care if he's scoring 25 yard worldies or tapping into an empty net - he still has to be in the right place at the right time to score the goals he's paid to do.

You're missing two important pieces of that jigsaw - he has to be there in the first place, and the pass has to find him - that's what we've been missing for too long.

I was in Bristol earlier for a family lunch, so missed the first 20 minutes, but excellent result, and great to see our strikers getting the goals too. I agree the Taylor/Tovide partnership really seems to be clicking into gear, in a game that I honestly thought would be harder than it turned out. Well done too Durham on your spot-on prediction for the final score!

I paid my Now TV one day subscription and watched the game. The EFL Trophy has always suffered from lack of interest. Yes these days it's badged as a 'protest' at the involvement of the PL U21 sides, but attendances weren't that much better before that if I'm honest. You're not wrong though, by far the easiest route to a Wembley appearance in the lower leagues.

First half was a hard watch, with the U's chasing shadows as MK Dons controlled the ball, but were surprisingly ineffective in doing anything with it - albeit they did score, mainly thanks to sleep-walking defending though. Matt Jay looked okay, good vision, nice feet, but we just couldn't hold onto the ball long enough for him to have an impact. Anderson looked like he'd done his groin, but (with no disrespect) it did force Danny to bring on Egbo, and it was his pace (and Tovidesque ability to fall over at the slightest nudge) that earned the penalty to give us an unlikely lifeline back into the game. Well taken by Scully, 'keeper went the right way, but beaten by power.

Second half was much better, for the second string. The Dongs still seemed determined to bore everyone to death with ball possession without purpose, but even then, Kelleher's goal still came as a bit of a surprise. Great determination too - first to his own knockdown, and with half the Dongs' defence hanging off his shirt to try and stop him. After that, with subs coming thick and fast, we just ran the clock down when we could, or let them dither it away with meaningless possession. I think by the end of the game they had over 75%.

One final point, it might have been under 1,200 there last night, but the lads at the back of S1 put in a sterling shift keeping the noise levels up with some entertaining chants - well done!

Haha - fishing emoji noted. I guess it’s all about expectation - finished 4th last season but failed spectacularly in the play-offs. This season, nine games in all competitions and they’ve lost seven. I doubt last night will be the final nail in his coffin, but their next defeat probably will be - if he hasn’t jumped by then.

Were you thinking of Ian Allinson? I know I was. I’m stumped so far - everyone I can think of that we’ve sold either didn’t start with us, didn’t play less than 100 games, didn’t play for us in the 80s or didn’t make the Premier League - it’s (at least) one of them in every case.

So, objectively in the cold light of day.

We were poor for most of the first 15-20 minutes and struggled to string passes together and establish any sort of rhythm. Their goal was a worldie, nothing Macey could do much about, but it did at least give us a bit of a kick up the arse. Second half of the first half we finally started to gel, although Morecambe were still a threat against our disjointed back line.

Two simple yellow cards and they’re down to 10 men (after their manager had already received the same). Lovely free kick in from Bishop and there was Edwards to rightly level the score. Second half things really started to click against an exceptionally poor side, great poachers finish from Samson to take the lead, and then an even better pass to give Taylor his first goal for the U’s. On Taylor, his touch looked a bit rusty for much of the first half, but he was really settling in and causing problems.

However, we were still allowing Morecambe chances, even at 3-1 we didn’t look safe. Having failed to convert a string of half-decent chances to extend the lead, the biggest mistake of the afternoon was unfortunately probably Danny Cowley’s. Swapping Read for Bishop I could understand, but not withdrawing Taylor, Goodliffe and Edwards in rapid succession. I get it’s all about team and game management, and 3-1 up against 10 men we should have been home and hosed, but it just ruined the cohesion and left us back as we were in the beginning of the first half.

As for the capitulation, you couldn’t make it up. Another incredibly soft penalty, even if Macey was a fingertip away from keeping out a perfect spot kick. Then Scully crashes one off the underside of the bar and the normally reliable Anderson blazes high and wide in front of an open goal. And finally, the coup de grace - lanky ex-Shrimper Dackers spurns the chance to equalise with a shot that was heading closer to the corner flag than the goal, only for it to cannon off Flanagan’s head and loop past a flat-footed Macey. Even though we tried, by then we were too disjointed to come back from that.

Danny talks about taking the learning often, I hope he does from yesterday.

Col U ifollow coverage
at 10:22 15 Sep 2024

Don’t think I’ve ever seen an ifollow stream from more than just the one camera if I’m honest, and they do show slo-mo playback - annoyingly often whilst important action on the pitch is taking place. By commentators, if you mean David Gregory and Neil Kelly (and others), I actually think they’re some of the best at this level of broadcasting. Your ifollow experience doesn’t sound like mine at all?

Sammy Szmodics? He made more than 100 appearances overall, but I believe only 99 league appearances?
