Weather's getting me down now. We were promised vineyards, sunflowers, siestas, the lot. I even had to turn the heating on last night - in July! And don't tell me it's all explained by the "man-made climate change" theory, because it bloody well isn't. The mad greenies told us 20 years ago we'd be frying by now, and they were WRONG. So how come we actually have a Government department of "Energy and CLIMATE CHANGE"? Has there ever before been a government department based on a complete myth - like the department for slaying dragons and unicorns, for example?

You're still doing it aren't you? Symptoms not causes.
As I said on this thread about a million years ago, causes are not difficult and simple experimental proof exists of the greenhouse effect, and also of how it changes with addition of more CO2.
You would have to be a serious loon not accept that humanity - Earth's dominant species - has accelerated the addition of CO2 and other greenhouse gases to the atmosphere, and in particular, since the start of the industrial age. Add more CO2 get more greenhouse effect.
Don't be a muppet Blobby, and don't try to play simple debating games with me either, it's cheap and nasty as well as beiing unnecessary.

What are you wittering on about? Simple debating games? Grow up.
All I know is, the earth was here 4.5 billion years before you and I turned up, its set to be here for another 4.5 billion years after we've all left it and, if we are lucky, we'll get to spend 80 odd years on it.
Now I don't know how fecking clever you lot are, but when I get up in the morning I see the tiniest piece of flat land that is actually round and turns in circles, yet amazingly I don't fall off. I see a blue sky that apparently isn't blue and to round it all off a dirty great yellow ball in the sky, about 93 million miles away, and yet, if you or I look at it we''ll go blind.
Given all these phenomenal things that we had zip all influence over it REALLY PISSES ME OFF that anyone, and I mean anyone, has the front to tell me how they can 'save the planet'.
I remember watching a black and white film when I was a kid where a big group of blokes were kneeling on the floor, scared to look up, whilst another bloke, dressed up bigtime and waving a spear over his head, kept pointing to this large 'mountain' behind him. I said to my old man 'what's going on?' and he said 'well, the bloke with the spear is telling his tribe that if they don't do exactly what he says then the mountain (volcano) will explode and they'll all be covered in boiling lava and die a horrible death'. He looked at me in silence, then I looked at him the same, then he started laughing, I started, and we both ended up p*ssing ourselves. I thought 'blimey, how can those muppets fall for that?'
And then the global warmists turned up.

Your argument doesn't stand up. The cost of doing something about climate change is next to nothing compared to what is going to happen if the Earth suffers a 2C average warming; more than that and the investment of $150 billion a year to avoid catastrophe looks like peanuts.
Secondly, the investment to avoid catastrophic climate change might very well - if handled properly - help us all, and the "Natural World" in many other ways. You might look at alternative energy in this respect, but also public transport, ecological building, ecological agriculture and food policy.
Let's try spending the world's entire budget for war on, how might we put it, planetary stewardship and human civilisation; your figures look ridiculous when taken in this context.
The other issue is that the cost of fossil fuels will rise. Do not assume it won't, tempting and convenient as that may be. George Osborne is overlooking this right now. It's imported gas which is putting up our fuel bills, the government's own stats prove it.
Oil from tar sands or gas from the Arctic will cost far more than Saudi oil, as an example.
Compare and contrast with many sources of renewable energy: You make the initial investment and then additional costs are modest.
GW/CC also raise the cost of things like food. That is significant.
I think a huge problem with the whole debate is that "global warming" and "climate change" sound quite benign, whereas if you said "200 million refugees by 2050" they sound as serious as they really are.

"Scientists were counted as UE ("unconvinced by the evidence") if having signed a public "statement strongly dissenting from the views of the IPCC." That resulted in a list of 472 UE scientists, of whom 1 was in the top 50 ("2% of the top 50 climate researchers") as defined by the publication-number ranking system.
Scientists were counted as CE ("convinced by the evidence") when in the list of those credited by the IPCC as having done research utilized by AR4 Working Group I. That resulted in a list of 619 names, which, after adjusting for duplication, became a total of 903 when also adding in those who signed one of several statements supporting the IPCC."
Here's the news about the US corn harvest, see for yourself. I doubt they are pretending there is a problem so they can use it to support the argument in favour of global warming, but then perhaps they are in league with the 97% of climate scientists who have made up the whole thing:

It isn't about saving the planet, it's about saving mankind. The planet will be fine.
CO2 is a "greenhouse" gas. That is simple chemistry. Manmade emissions of it are colossal and rising, up over 3% last year. Nothing more complicated than that, that is the core of the problem.

Stevec thanks for that lump of ranty rubbish. Amazingly it hasn't managed to convince me fo the errors of opinion on global warming.
Sadly this sort of 'simple man's logic' has no bearing on climate science.
You are also missing the point. If we don't change the planet will still be here (of course) it's just that our existence it will be a lot less pleasant.

Yes R from afar (and Westbourne R) I accept your view but mine is that you or me can do absolutely nothing of influence so stop trying to pretend you can do something about it. Some things are far greater than us and if we all accepted this and got on with our lives there would be a lot less angst for everyone.
Despite your alarmist views, I cannot honestly see anything fundamentally changed over the last however many years. Tell me any tangible evidence that anyone can see with their own eyes. I don't mean 3% more pollution, ice caps melting, I mean stuff like Southend disappearing into the sea in fact any place anywhere disappearing into the sea and I'm not talking bits of cliff or frozen water - it just ain't happening.
Of course, if you were really serious about the planet, you wouldn't be going on about global warming, you'd be telling us that in our relatively short lifetime a population explosion from 4 billion people to 7 billion people on this planet has been the real danger to us both economically and environmentally but I suspect that's one area you don't want to go.
The consequence of that is something we can all be scared about.

The human race became screwed in the 1950's when the population went past the 2 billion mark.Climate change doesn't really matter. It's going to be an unpleasant future with or without it.

Aint that the truth. The time bomb is ticking.. Expect mother nature to come up with a killer flu
Hehehehehe, that's the same story I put on to bump this thread back up to the first page................ which more or less tells you most of what you need to know about internet forum discussions.
I am sympathetic to the view that it might all be a little late to worry about this, except for one thing, like a lot of us, I have kids and I hope that one day they'll have kids. I don't think that we are powerless to changde things and I think that thinking about future generations is a pretty compelling moral argument to at least have a go.

RFA, you clearly feel strongly about this issue, and believe all the warmist propaganda, but has it never occurred to you that this story might be being manipulated for political ends? Are you not aware of the "Climategate" emails?

Excellent. But also more possible than you might think. Climate change sceptics have already been referred to as criminals responsible for genocide. And this academic says we must be mentally ill:
