Appliance Repairs - Who Bothers these days? 16:00 - Jan 26 with 3065 views | Toast_R | My dad's double oven broke, the switch on the main oven no longer clicks into place and just spins when turned. Switch broken, it's worn. 2008 Bosch oven, it happens. Rest of it works fine, top oven and grill. Quotes from local company to repair it, order the part and replace it, £90 call out, cost of part £35 to £60 and labour £150 plus VAT. Just bought him a brand new double oven for £430 including delivery, and removal and recycling of the broken one. I can remember in the 80s and 90s, household appliances were always repaired. Was it always that expensive? Seems ridiculous, but there you go. | ![](/images/avatars/1554.gif) | | | ![](/images/icons/ignore-user.png) |
Appliance Repairs - Who Bothers these days? on 22:01 - Jan 28 with 407 views | scot1963 | I've had to throw away 3 fridge freezers over the last year or so - the last one had started to alternate between sounding like a herd of cattle and a jet landing; then the fridge part stopped working; then the freezer but was still ok as a very cold fridge that decided occasionally it was going to freeze the milk or a diet coke and then I've just given up on it. I've gone for a much smaller version this time in hope. And the shed outside was looking like a graveyard for half the kitchen - halogen ovens/microwaves and other kitchen appliances that had failed - so much so I renamed it deconstructed kitchen (modern art a la that Tracey Emin bedroom). | ![](/images/avatars/5472.gif) | | ![](/images/icons/ignore-user.png) |

He said he'd had it 17 years and in that time he's only had to replace the head three times and the handle twice. I reckon it'll last me a lifetime | ![](/images/avatars/4057.gif) |

There's a company here that deliver next day, connect the appliance and take the old one away. They also price match other outlets. Makes it difficult to justify repair time and costs. | ![](/images/avatars/0.gif) | | ![](/images/icons/ignore-user.png) |
