Ok….. 19:19 - Nov 27 with 1343 views | saint22 | ….. I may be wrong but are we really persisting with a manager who consistently loses us games Are we just going to let this happen? Are the board genuinely going to letthis carry on, until say January and then suddenly decide actually this isn’t a good idea, by which time it’s too late and we are doomed?? I cannot see how any one with any ounce of business or financial acumen can say this is a good idea Really? I just cannot see why we are doing this? It cannot be financially better to get relegated? All our players who may command a fee will be cheaper as a result of that not to mention everything else that comes with it If this the plan then it’s seriously wrong [Post edited 27 Nov 19:19]

Ok….. on 19:54 - Nov 27 with 1264 views | Ifonly | Yes it's seriously wrong. So why are they doing it? I think the most likely explanation is the whisper we've heard previously that the board are split, with Ankersen backing RM. Remember that RM is part of Ankersen's long term master plan to move all SR clubs to the same possession based style. Ankersen is supposedly the football brain on the board (what a joke) so for him to be overruled on a football matter would not be a small issue - so that is probably the reason for the inaction. I don't believe that the mooted £10m cost would stop them as there are ways of reducing that and as you say the costs of failure are far, far greater.

Persisting all the way back to The Championship along most probably with Ipswich and Leicester as company. Sports Republic relegated us the season before last so why is it even a surprise that they have done it again ?

there is a school of thought that is emerging of late that says that the gap between the Championship & Premier League is so great that promoted clubs have two options and both are a big gamble. 1. They can spend big and hope that it is enough to keep them up and then they can build on a second season, but if they do go down then they are financially down the pan and perhaps not able to compete in the Championship for promotion 2. Try and build a squad without sidling the club with truly big transfer fees and wages, if you stay up then you can again build on those foundations, but if you go down then you are not too financially strapped and can mount a strong promotion challenge Both are gambles. Personally i am beginning to think that yes Russell Martin could well be a good manager in the Championship if we go down, but if he gets us back up we are just going to repeat this season again as he enforces his style of play to players not good enough

So we need to buy players good enough to play Russell Martin’s system. That’ll cost.

That is the dilemma, to get in players who can play it to such a high degree that Martin seems to demand, we have to break the financial fair play rules and leave us sidled with overpaid players who we cant get rid of, to join the overpaid players we cant get rid of from two years ago

i am not sure even with better players he would know how best to play them? Would he drop Slack Jack if we had better CB ?? He already deemed THB droppable over him this season]the guy is a fraud

Everton and Forest broke the FFP rules and were punished. They will both be in The Premier League next season.

If we were to break the rules, we should've already done so. We're going down. New players will just be extra handshakes and funky nicknames for Russ to use.

Agree with everything you say here Nick. The sooner the top clubs income wise ( Man City, Man Utd , Arsenal etc etc ) get their wish and bugger off to a European Super League the better as far as I’m concerned. I haven’t enjoyed any part of our return to The Premiership. It’s now simply a league dominated by money with the top few teams effectively just large businesses with football teams attached. I’m already looking forward to next season in The Championship. Cheaper seats, more games, sensible K O times ( our upcoming game against Spurs starts at 19.00 on a Sunday for pity sake ) and none of the utterly pathetic V A R where biased non entities not even at the grounds decide match outcomes. Perhaps with hindsight I should have said mostly more sensible kick off times. Half full grounds ? I don’t recall St Mary’s being half full on any occasion last season.

Ok….. on 09:37 - Nov 28 with 837 views | dirk_doone | If Martin's still here, we'll be in trouble if he can't learn how to change to modern tactics. We were lucky to finish as high as 4th the last time (9 points below the automatic promotion places), but we won't get away with playing possession football next season. Even all the Championship managers will know how to beat us now, and the novelty of losing to teams like Hull will have well and truly worn off by then. [Post edited 28 Nov 9:41]

Surely it's better in Div 1 isn't it? Better kick off times, cheaper seats etc. Your ambition has no bounds.

We were one of the full grounds last season. You watch The Championship highlights show and look at the empty seats. The Championship maybe fun if you’re up the top.

I want Southampton to be in the highest league possible. Wanting to play in a league below which the objective is to gain promotion seems strange. We have a team of 90% Championship players and a manager who is too stubborn change his style of play to suit the ‘tools’ at his disposal. So The Championship is where we are heading. The club and the city need to be in The Premier League. There’s plenty of one time Premier League clubs that are stagnating in the lower leagues.

That's just not realistic. Never has been. Never will be. RM's system is extreme in its focus on possession and so it's extreme in the type of players required to play it. Throw in the fact that this is the PL so the players ALSO need to have great physicality and you are talking about the best players in the world. Are we seriously going to compete with Man City for players? No. But that's what we would have to do to make RM's system work.

Possession football's days are numbered. It's been well and truly rumbled. Even Man City can't play it successfully any more without Rodri. The fact we're still contemplating playing it next season is concerning, to say the least. The last time we were in the Championship most teams used to sit back and let us get away with it; they won't any more. Championship forwards will be queuing up to pick off those wayward sideways passes we make in front of our own goal. [Post edited 28 Nov 11:20]
