England v Sweden semi-final 12:47 - Jul 26 with 3882 viewsPatfromPoole

Have a sneaking suspicion our ladies may come unstuck tonight.

They do seem to have a bit of a problem with semi-finals.

Will be a close game, probably extra-time.

Though I might add I know next to nothing about women’s football.

As with men’s football, some will claim…..

Well I'm watching it (well that or another so called celeb quiz type prog on itv), and quite enjoying it with England now dominating, but having to accept League 1 at best standard.

But can only hope for the Alas Smith & Jones sketch about the predictable shirt swapping at the end!

Just plain daft to compare standards and levels of men and women, a league 1 side would be far to strong physically and would beat any women's side quite easily, as would Nadal beat any women tennis player. Nobody compares men's and women's standards in tennis do they?

On a side note, I remember seeing Fran Kirby (who scored the 4th tonight ) playing for the Reading Centre of Excellence between the ages of 10-16 ( as my daughter played for the Hampshire Centre of Excellence) and you could tell she was different gravy back then.
At that age she'd have been the best player if she'd played in any boys team in Reading, but upwards of 16 even she wouldn't be able to compete strength wise.

Nailed on, pal 😉

Mind you, with McCarthy in goal, Djenepo at LB, and Ralph making the tactical decisions……

I wonder if Sarina Wiegman would be a better option as our manager! She seems to have tactical nous, know when to make substitutions and motivate players.

I think it’s only a matter of time before a women gets a managerial job in the mens game. I think Emma Hayes could also move into the mens game in the next few years.

You are right, the standards of womans football has improved greatly, but I would say that due to the strength issues especially in the goalkeeping and defensive positions, a good non league team would probably beat the England women's side.

Solent Toffee suggested that a woman might one day manage a men's side, I'm not sure that is close at the moment, we are all getting swept along with the tide at the moment, but ultimately there is a lot of difference between the tactics and the standards, as above, the level is still non league, the challenges faced are different, Serina Wiegman is coaching the top women in the sport against other top women, that would be far different than managing Port Vale against Exeter City for instance in League One.

Older readers will remember that actress Cherie Lunghi took over the running of a second division club back in 1989/90, it didn't run smoothly, mind you having Warren Clarke as your Chairman and the likes of Mark McGann and Stephen Tompkinson in your squad it was never going to be easy.

Lunghi lasted two seasons before she was "sacked" by channel 4

A shout out for Saints for having the foresight to make a big investment in women's football — virtually restarting from scratch in 2016. Whatever you think of the women's game & where it's heading, it's definitely a growth area.

This season might be about consolidating in The Championship but hopefully a step up to the WSL in the next few seasons & eventually more home games at St Mary's.

The 3rd goal made me chuckle. The english player misses a sitter then does a back heel of sorts and trickled through the world class (according to the commentator) Swedish goalkeepers legs. The goal reminded me a Dave Beasent howler.
Any way back to the back heel - reading the bbc it was a sublime goal, the best goal Vikki sparks has ever seen... Clearly she needs to watch a le tissier best of

Third goal was a brilliant idea if lucky to avoid two sets of legs, maybe you watched it in slow motion because no-one on the pitch or even in the stadium saw that coming.

I did find the commentary a little biased, everything England did was brilliant, even when the keeper came for a cross early on and got nowhere and the Swedish player headed against the bar the commentators tried to make out she had done enough to put her off

“having to accept League 1 at best standard"

Do you watch the women's final at Wimbledon & say: I'm enjoying it but Novak Djokovic would thrash both of these?

No, but then I don't particularly like women's tennis and often, not always, find that boring back of court to back of court tennis

I have said I enjoyed last night's game, there were some good goals, some hefty tackles going in and it seemed a bit of an atmosphere.

I am not totally dishing the women's game, I just cannot get overly excited about it and if nothing else takes my fancy will probably watch Sunday's final, although England men take on South Africa men in a T20 match

I assume you must watch a lot of women's football then at all levels do you? If so, you have every right to be more knowledgeable on the game that I am. It is merely an observation

Hardly. I've been to a few games, including the final of the 2017 Euros. Watched more on TV. I'm not sure that's relevant, though.

There's no reason at all why everybody should be a fan of women's football. If it's not your cup of tea then you don't have to follow it. I just think it's a bit pointless to compare it to men's football. Same with women's cricket, rugby, boxing, cycling, athletics, rowing, ...

Had Talksport on briefly this morning talking about the game and Dean Saunders was on there (one reason it was only on briefly), but he was making a sensibly comment (unusual for him) about the England keeper and clearly after he said it realised he shouldn't have by making a reference to how well she did and came out and "spread her legs" as she was making the save with her feet in the way that keepers make themselves "big"

You could just sense the realisation of what he said as a bit of a gaff

You've got to give the girl Russo credit for her intelligence though surely, if 30,000 in the ground and millions watching on the box didn't see the back heel coming, the keeper wouldn't have really expected that either.
