Prodigal Son Could Return To St Mary's Wednesday, 21st Jun 2017 10:30 After three years away from the club Saints are rumoured to be talking to Arsenal about the return of one of our prodigal sons, last seen in a Saints shirt in 2014.
Arsenal have apparently told Callum Chambers that he has no future at the Emirates and that he can leave for a fee of £15 million, slightly less than the amount the Gunners paid to Saints to take him to North London in the summer of 2014.
Initially he flourished under Arsene Wenger who sought to change him from the full back role he started in at St Mary's into a central defender, something which had been mooted at Saints but never quite tried.
But his second season at the Gunners saw him play only 12 times in the Premier League, last season although he started on the opening day he was soon off to Middlesbrough on loan for the rest of the season.
There were many at the time who though that given the issues with Jose Fonte that Saints should have brought Chambers back to St Mary's last August, something that in hindsight would have been a very good idea.
Now it seems it could happen although there will be competition from supposedly Everton and Newcastle, although it would be strange if the Toffee's were interested given that they seem to be well served at both right back and central defence, the two positions were Chambers would be looking to get a game and at this stage of his career he needs to be looking at regular first team football.
Still only 22 he has plenty of time to kick start his career and fulfill the potential that he showed at Saints in his first spell and that has seemed to have been knocked out of him at Arsenal.

Why would we want him? He's rubbish.

The Boro defence didn't concede many last season, but ultimately they got relegated. We should be setting our sites a little higher than that. Yes he is still young and has potential, but apparently he didn't want to come here on loan before, so why would he want to back here permanent basis. No thank you !!

He seems like a bargain if we can really get him for less than we sold him for three years ago.

We are pretty well appointed at LB TBH. Pied is a fare player and Cedric looks to be improving. I can only see him coming if we sell Cedric.

Jesus, most of the time he plays as a centre back. We need another centre back anyway even if VVD stays.

Jesus, Both Pied and Cedric are RB's and if we were seriously considering a move for Chambers, he'd be coming in as competition for Yoshida/Stephens...

WTF would we want him back here? Prodigal Son my rrrrrrr he is little more than a spoilt money grubbing little brat who believed all the hype and found out the hard way that he is effing useless. Sorry for the unusual outburst of invective but we shouldn't even be giving him or his deluded agent air.

I’m not fussed either way. I like to give credit where it’s due though and so congratulations to Les and the board for seeing that £15m for an unproven second string left back was stupid money. And that was supposed to be part of a “meltdownâ€! In fact during said "meltdown" only Lallana seems to have gone on to improve.

You must be joking! He gets what he wants-transfer to one of the biggest clubs in the league with a huge rise in wages, and he show up for his first training session with them well overweight? "Unprofessional" doesn't even begin to describe him!

One major factual error here - he never appeared in a Saints shirt, just that God-awful plain red abomination from adidas.

Really rated him before he left, thought he would be a huge star but as usual the grass is not always greener. Would be interested in this but only at the right price - £15 million is way too much.

He was as good as, if not better than Clyne and many a game he was preferred. With proper grooming he should have developed into a centre back role but at Arsenal he was rushed into the job. I have no idea of his character but if he went for the money well who hasn't left saints for more money.

Blogs 31 bloggersKnees-up Mother Brown #19 by wessex_exile February, and the U’s enter the most pivotal month of the season. Six games in just four weeks, with four of them against sides also in the bottom six. By March we should be either well clear of danger, or even deeper in the sh*t. With Danny Cowley’s U’s still unbeaten, and looking stronger game on game, I’m sure it’ll be the former, but first we have to do our bit to consign Steve ‘Sour Grapes’ Cotterill’s FGR back to non-league. After our shambolic 5-0 defeat at New Lawn, nothing would give me greater pleasure, even if it meant losing one of my closest awaydays in the process. What’s the excuse going to be today Steve – shocking pitch, faking head injuries, Mexican banditry or some other bit of sour-grapery bullsh*t? Arsenal Polls |
