Part 1 Doesn't Go Our Way !
Tuesday, 10th May 2016 22:31

West Ham United came back from 2-1 down to beat Manchester United this evening in the first part of the midweek matches that will determine our season, it is going to be a dramatic last day !

Saints could finis anywhere between 5th and 8th as they go into the last game of the season after an appalling defensive display by Manchester United all but handed a 3-2 win to West Ham tonight.

That means that Saints need Stoke City to do us a favour and get at least a draw with West Ham at the Brittania Stadium on Sunday, if West Ham get no better than a draw up in the Potteries and Saints beat Crystal Palace then Saints will finish above the Hammers who will presumably not be very happy.

Part 1 of this week hasn't gone our way, but hopefully part 2 will fare better for us with Chelsea heading to Anfield on Wednesday evening, again if Chelsea can take a point then it will at least leave our destiny in finishing above Liverpool in our own hands.

What is sure though after tonight is that Sunday is going to be a nail biter of a finish with results elsewhere being monitored closely in the stands, indeed if Manchester United lose to Bournemouth at Old Trafford and we beat Palace then we would finish above them on goal difference.

It is going to be interesting on Sunday, but this is what we want from our team and the very fact that for a second season running we are playing the final game with a chance of 5th place is something to applaud the team for.

Might west ham not be in hot water points wise for delaying the game etc?

At least neither wet spam or l'pool can afford to draw on sunday - as long as we win of course! Given how poor manure are at the back a bournemouth win would be more 'big surprise' than 'massive shock' so here's to fifth...

at least they only won with 1+ goal difference putting them on the same as us (+15), so if they draw on Sunday and we win by a solitary goal, we go above them....(and they face Stoke away, not so easy)

That was the only result that would give us a chance of 5th place. Staying positive!!

@Scummer - have you worked out the scores that give us fifth?

Surely, West Ham winning last night was the only result that would enable us to finish 5th, irrespective of goals..

@SaintsGeorge If Man U had drawn or won then they would have been on 64 or 66 points - and we can only get to 63 with a win against Palace.

For us to get to 5th then we need to win. We also need both Man U and West Ham to lose their final matches, and for Liverpool to fail to get maximum points from their remaining two games.

On the negative side, we can end up 8th even if we do win. None of this is in our hands.

Actually, Nick is right - a West Ham loss or draw would work, as our GD would improve with a win.
