Returning centre backs give right back cover Thursday, 13th Oct 2011 21:26
As injuries continue to ravage Wenger's options, his versatile centre backs are returning just in time. Johan Djourou and Laurent Koscielny are in contention to start the match against Sunderland, allowing Alex Song to push forward into midfield and also ensuring that Carl Jenkinson is not our only option at right back. The boss has admitted that Coquelin's 'confidence is not high there (at right back)' but he states that Koscielny 'has been educated as a right back'. It is a position that has become crucial as the ability of the full back can influence the confidence of the winger playing in front. If Walcott is not able to trust his defender to be in position he will be less likely to push forward and we will lose our attacking threat as well as being more vulnerable in defence. The loss of Sagna is a painful one but with Vermaelen also closing in on a return this month we should have enough defenders to cover every position and give ourselves a chance of building some form.
