Dale vs Manchester United U21s
at 15:11 3 Dec 2024

I suppose I agree about tempting folk to return but is it really our aim to sell Man U as our football dream for the prawn sandwich fan rather than the gourmet dish that is supporting your own home team?
ps - no I'm not attending any of these Premier league 'pieces of silver'.

maybe the difference is the extent to which the opposition nullify our strengths - "fair play to Braintree" as you say.
Equally I'd agree we need to have a plan B, C etc before and during games against the Solihull's & Braintrees.

yes but if he does go inside as yesterday he leaves more space on our left (as Elldale noted above) - and Burger (who's not the strongest tackler) moving wider also extends his distance from East - there are down sides to every up; a change to 4 at the back & 3 in m/f might regain the initiative against sides who match us up (Solihull/Braintree).

Inevitably if our good form continues players will come onto the radar - the Hartlepool commentators mentioned they'd advise Gateshead to have a look at Ferguson

Dale soak up more pressure, Henderson plays a lovely ball through the centre to Rodney who rounds the keeper and slots home

Dale soak up Hartlepool pressure then attack with a lovely ball from Gordon inside the FB, quick flat cross by TAR & Mitchell taps in from 2 yards

Agree - and why we need a plan B when opposition's do that - eg change of formation (& possible personnel) and try to outnumber through the middle. Possibly play Beckwith or Armstrong at LB & bring on Allarakhia for last 20 mins and play him centrally. Equally using Gilmour (with Allarakhia) as aerial cover for Beckwith against SM's big physical strikers (heading is the weakness of our back 3) meant we had an overcrowded back line and lost an out ball option - why not instead play Ferguson who's stronger in the air as part of a back 4 allowing 3 in the middle?

As the OP wrote - "they tend to sit tight and play on the break. Also skilled in the dark arts particularly killing time at every opportunity."
True to the prediction they didn't disappoint but why then did we not change our formation - 2 in midfield struggled when it was through the middle that we'd likely have success (as with the goal) and why did we select our lightest weight players when it needed us to have dark arts too (eg Henderson).
I'm not criticising the players for slow play when it was the formation (until the last 10mins) nor for mistakes when they were the result of opposition pressure. Good effort in the dying minutes but the changes should have been made before the game or at worst at half time.

Yes I've been pleasantly surprised by Armstrong but isn't he more of a full back without Allarakhia's attacking strength? Agree Gordon is more important as the right CB.

442's earlier post questions the personnel and timing of the RWB substitution. McNulty has tried various players as cover for TAR with debateable success - despite the relative strength in depth of this season's squad I'd say several players have no like-for-like cover - eg Allarakhia & TAR.

Agreed - both our WBs were high for that goal and Henry, McBride and Ayinde's movement helped create that space in the middle

I'd say the latter - they had some joy down their right so he had a lot of covering to do; when he was subbed didn't look like he'd enjoyed the game much. Also Armstrong (who I didn't rate last season) did a good job when he came on marking their winger.

I knew all about it in advance so allowed extra 1 hour to travel from Rochdale to Wigan (in line with google maps prediction - outward 27 miles journey took an hour, return took 5 hours... the outside lanes need closing in turn several miles before the motorway closure rather than allowing 4 lanes to converge at the closure

Ody Alfa (edited) 25, winger/WB, ex-Chelmsford, 1 year deal to Summer 2025.
Don't recall Trialist B having any great impact - others might.

2 changes from Carlisle game - Burger for McBride & East for Gilmour. Subs included Alfa (thanks IOMD getting a person's name right is much more than pedantry), Gilmour, McBride, Barlow, Henderson, trialist.

Built on last Sat playing 3:4:3 - another screamer from Henry who I think also knitted in M/F better today; Gordon outshone Beckwith defensively although Beckwith's touches in & around the box in the first half were encouraging. EEL had another solid game as did Adebayo-Rowling - good to see he coped well when switched to LWB when the subs came on. Even McNicholas' long kicks (to feet) worked better to day.

Again lovely progressive triangles around the edge of the box carved Salford open regularly and Allarakhia was often at the centre of those. He finished up playing as a striker.

Rodney, Mitchell and Burger pressed well, made some great runs and were often found by short through balls between CB & FB - Burger looks a real asset.

Icing on the cake was Henderson slipping McBride in for the 5th

One disappointment was Gilmour coming on as a sub failed to influence the game in his usual way.

Demonstrations outside Rochdale Police Station
at 13:55 28 Jul 2024

You make some fair comments and I agree with you & DA that skin colour doesn't determine youth criminality but it isn't true Paul Waugh's comments were all biased against the police or lacking concern. Here are some of his comments:-

Parliament 24/7
"Our police face a very difficult job everyday in keeping us safe"

X 25/7
"The police have said that while trying to arrest a suspect, three of their officers were attacked. They said that one officer suffered a broken nose and all three needed hospital treatment."

Facebook 25/7
"I also asked the Assistant Chief Constable to pass on my thoughts and concern for the female police officer injured in the run up to this incident....There is a wider background and context to this incident which will be explored by the Independent Office for Police Conduct and it’s important not to rush to judgment based on social media clips."

X 27/7
"Yesterday's meeting in Rochdale made clear that this is a community that strongly believes in the rule of law, that the criminal justice system should follow the evidence wherever it leads, and that offenders should be punished appropriately."

Perhaps it's more about what selection the media make of someone's comments. Overall I share DA's view that Waugh has done well in attempting to defuse the situation whilst rightly representing his constituents.

Demonstrations outside Rochdale Police Station

Not particularly.
This looks like an excerpt from (official?) static CCTV footage whereas the original broadcast footage was from a private mobile phone which may not have captured all the incident. Even this footage doesn't show the start of the contact between the police officers and members of the public.
The question was never whether the officers had or hadn't been attacked but whether, whatever the provocation, their response was proportionate/professional etc

Agreed – some positive signs although it's early days

Keeper had an easy game – he looked to mix up playing out through their press and low-trajectory long balls which were a bit hit & miss.

Beckwith looked comfortable on the floor and his was the first pass through the lines which started the move for Mitchell’s goal. Gordon & EBL had solid performances. Their weakness is possibly in the air - the 3 of them rarely won a header.
Allarakhia had some good moments including couple of interceptions & appeared to be playing more an inverted FB role in the 2nd half and, whilst I didn’t notice Adebayo-Rowling as much in the first half, both added to the MF sharpness.

Gilmour took 10 mins to get into the game but once he did he became more and more influential – getting his distances with Henry right will come with game time.
Apart from his excellent 25 yds free kick goal, Henry is forward thinking (possibly more so than East), had several attempts at a pass behind the FB though his execution let him down sometimes today.

Good to see Rodney & Mitchell up top though both struggled to break down a rugged Carlisle defence, bar Rodney hitting the post (see MH below) & the first goal. Rodney had a couple of good driving runs but lost the ball trying to turn his defender on a couple of occasions (lost focus?) and Mitchell ran hard but perhaps didn’t make the most of the long balls.

Conner McBride played as 3rd striker, had one excellent run and pressed well.

We mixed it up with balls over their back line and also playing out from the back with some lovely triangles moving forward quickly (as with Mitchell’s goal).
