The game model
at 13:25 24 Nov 2024

Nourry set out in this interview with a local rag what his "game model" is - https://londonnewsonline.co.uk/sport/qpr-chief-executive-nourry-we-will-stick-wi

His words were tbat the game model is:

"some form of 4-3-3, possession-based, mid-block/high press football,”

adding:

"we did that by looking at the last 10 years of the Championship and what won you points and what allowed you sustainability to bring in 16 to 24-year-old players who could play well in the system, develop and be the best players they could possibly be."

In terms of enforcing this he said:

"We have a club game model of how we want to play football. That’s a document that is now under the per view of our head of methodology [Jon De Souza], who’s in charge of policing the game model."

And it was also indicated in relation to the longevity of his game model:

"Nourry is adamant that the club will not move away from the game model approach even if the team struggles to get results on the pitch, and it will guide the process of appointing head coaches in the future."

Any problems with that?

Just a few.

First, "some form of 433".. Please. What does that mean?

Second, why not broadcast to everyone how we are going to play so they can set up for it.

Third, the data set is historic and relates to players who are, in all likelihood, not in this team given the age profile referred to.

Fourth, this flawed, historic data set refers to Championship players. The players we signed are not Championship players. Nourry would doubtless say that there was room for them to progress as Championship players because you look at their data based attributes. That's possibly fine if you look at all of the attributes. However, how do you focus on a subjective quality like stomach for a fight in an objective data set? In short, he is comparing apples with oranges and saying they are the same thing.

Fifth, having now determined that the flawed basis for how the club will play is the game model, we then have a "Director of Methodology" to enforce it. So who is Methodology copper, Jon De Souza? Well looking at other sources rather than the puff and bullshit we get from Nourry, he is a solid, lower league academy coach - https://www.charltonafc.com/news/view/6262720a6c8e8/jon-de-souza-appointed-as-me Yet he is enforcing the flawed game model. In other words, in terms of policing the flawed methodology, he outranks what Marti wants to do. In other words, it all comes back to Nourry to decide what will happen because he will report to Nourry.

Finally, in terms of Nourry indicating that the gane model will endure even if results do not go our way, this is blatant stupidity. Quite apart from it saying that reality is wrong because it doesn’t fit the flawed methodology, the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again, and expecting to get a different result.

I am astonished that our owners think that this experiment is worth persevering with. Instead of data and artificial intelligence, why don't we actually apply some analogue, fact based intelligence to the problem and see if Marti can get a tune out of the rabble he has be given with any sort of system.

Presumably in the data only analysis that the club carried out, they should have looked at where the Swiss Super League stands in the UEFA coefficient rankings - https://www.uefa.com/nationalassociations/uefarankings/country/?year=2025. The answer is 16th, marginally better than the SPL. Relatively, from a data perspective, Celar is therefore considerably more expensive than Dykes and a very considerably worse player.

Good point. The next issue will be when pantomime season starts and we lose half the squad to Snow White for six weeks.

I think you are missing the point if you are saying that because he called himself/was called a Managing Partner at/by RETEXO that he has any sort of knowledge or experience. If you are saying that; it is utter nonsense.

The CEO role of a Championship side is all about time served and experience, not what you called yourself previously in your tinpot consulting business. Let's be absolutely clear - RETEXO is not and never has been a big consulting firm. It was three people in their 20s trying to blag it in football, one of whom is apparently mates with the son of a billionaire who owns two clubs (per a very reliable source who used to be a CEO of three professional football clubs).

Nourry has no experience of running football clubs. His chronology is readily assembled from the internet. He was at two good universities (got a first at Trinity, Oxford https://acrobat.adobe.com/id/urn:aaid:sc:EU:3e8f9d1a-2590-4a12-9aa4-48fe33ef469c and then went on to Imperial).

He then set up his social media company and was subsequently working for RETEXO (after closing his relatively unsuccessful social media company where he worked for about two years) before then blagging his way in to QPR with a load of nonsense being peddled to the world at large about what he had being doing in football for the last five years (very little, actually).

He is not partner material at any City based consultancy or even in one of the big sports consultancies.

He is a kid who is long on confidence and short on practical experience. It is a disastrous combination.

Moreover, to try and make out that he has some sort of insight into professional football or that he understands recruitment in football, as he does here - https://londonnewsonline.co.uk/sport/christian-nourry-on-being-a-sports-minded-c

is utterly facile. He has got no experience in the game, no coaching badges, nothing. And yet he is running the show. No wonder that Marti is distancing himself from this game model nonsense. Marti is an experienced coach who is having to take orders about football from a kid in a suit who has done nothing in the game and knows nothing about it. And it is also no wonder that we are where we are. We deserve it for giving control to a chancer.

You couldn’t make this up. It is the sort of thing that Beale might do. Oh, wait a minute, he did exactly that.

I see. So this is what is meant by:

"Nourry previously served as co-founder of the Get Football Group, a sports media organisation specialising in the provision of news and analysis of European football in English to millions of fans worldwide as well as other international media companies."

In fact, according to this - Take a look at Retexo, Inc. (@Retexo_insights): https://x.com/Retexo_insights?t=lvk3Yaz-3_mpTWNoO-PSJg&s=08 - Retexo had been incorporated by 2020 when Nourry was still at Imperial. So it seems he joined rather than formed it.

Yes, Retexo is an interesting one. Charles Gould is the guy behind that. He is a Brit seemingly operating a private company based in Texas https://www.linkedin.com/company/retexo/

Presumably, that is because Gould is trying to get Americans to buy English clubs.

According to Gould - https://onefootball.com/en/news/charles-gould-of-retexo-intelligence-discusses-h - he has been in football since 2010. Nourry would have been 13 at that point.

Nourry was at Retexo in 2023 according to this Guardian article - https://www.theguardian.com/football/2023/jun/17/multi-club-ownership-becomes-th which ties in with when he wound up his TicToc marketing business.

In any event, he doesnt appear to have been advising leading European football clubs for the last 5 years.

Part of the problem with Nourry is that so much of what is freely availabile about the child on the internet does not stack up.

To start with, the Club's announcement on 12 Jan 2024 about his appointment - https://www.qpr.co.uk/news/2024/january/12/christian-nourry-replaces-lee-hoos-as
This states that :

"Nourry has spent the past half-decade as an advisor and consultant to some of the most significant ownership groups and football clubs worldwide, most recently in his capacity as Managing Partner for Europe of market-leading football data analytics and advisory business, RETEXO.

It adds that "Nourry previously served as co-founder of the Get Football Group, a sports media organisation specialising in the provision of news and analysis of European football in English to millions of fans worldwide as well as other international media companies."

Okay - so the past 5 years - back to January 2019 then.

However, there is then this interview that he gave to the Business School at Imperial College London seemingly after April 2021 (because of the timings in the Article) - https://www.imperial.ac.uk/business-school/faculty-research/research-centres/gan From this, he was apparently at Trinity, Oxford prior to 2019/2020 when he was next at Imperial (remember of course that Covid was in full swing then).

That article has him as founder of HB Media in April 2021 (which was clearly a bunch of nobodies- "HB Media is made up of 10 Gen Z team members, all 24 or younger and almost all with some major early experience in media or entertainment – from an ex-production assistant of a Hollywood actor, to an ex-singer/songwriter who had recording deal offers from Sony and Universal.") It was a social media business for 19 to 24 year olds (his age at the time). There is no mention of him working in football or setting up Get Football Group.

HB Media Group Limited was a real entity https://find-and-update.company-information.service.gov.uk/officers/n7hGT1sbqJN2 Not a roaring success according to its accounts and wound up in January 2024 (when he was appointed at QPR).

The chronology suggests that he did a degree, did a course at Imperial 19/20, set up HB Media. He clearly joined RETEXO at some point after April 2021 - HB's accounts for31 December 2022 are for a dornant company. He does not appear to have been advising leading European clubs for the last 5 years.

In short, I am calling bullsh!t on him.

When Derby were on the slide before going into administration, Mel Morris was touting the club around to anyone who would look at it. A reliable souce confirmed he was offered the opportuniy and responded he would take it plus a low 8 figure cash sum from Morris. Turns out that would have been a good deal. We might not be too far away from that.

On a slightly brighter note after what was probably the worst QPR performance I have ever seen, Sandro is still keeping himself fit and is playing in non-league football now - https://www.londonworld.com/sport/football/spurs/tottenham-harborough-town-sandr

And he is only 35, which probably makes him younger than when he was playing for us.

We can look forward to a new one each year, box thereby ticked.

Who was out of contract, and unable to be-signed hence the whole point of the case, which established that he had a right to move.

Leaving that aside, what, honestly, is the point of actually showing you the primary source and explaining it if you are going to ignore it? You can't do it. It's not difficult.

I'm with Padul's Shampoo - but he knows that!

The link I attached is the FIFA Player Transfer rules. You can only register a player in the two registration periods (transfer windows), the exception being a professional whose contract has expired prior to the end of a registration period may be registered outside that registration period.

That is, if a player still has a contract up to and including the end of the registration period/transfer window, they cannot be regisitered until the next period/window.
