Mark Robins

Robins always seem to start badly for Cov and then they would slowly climb the table over the rest of the season.

Someone who can climb the tale from a poor start is exactly what we need!

Rohl
at 15:21 16 Dec 2024

I'm sure Rohl is good. Despite what Nick says, there was a real sense at the time that something changed when he last left.

But the problem with appointing someone who's not managed in the PL before is that we never know whether bad results are down to their inexperience or the quality of the players.

Moyes failed to keep Sunderland up but he clearly knows what he is doing at this level.

He has got to be the best option and the club need to persuade him to try again to save a team in red and white.

He's got 22 games to find 8 wins and 8 draws.

Southampton FC Sack Russell Martin

5 nil at half time forced them to sack him.

They would never have made the decision on their own. The previous 15 games proved that.

Tottenham Hotspur Game Matchday Thread

I rarely leave a game before the end.

I couldn’t sit there any more after the third.

Leaving a match after 15 mins. Ridiculous but I don’t feel bad about it.

These cretins have pushed the fan base far enough.

Are football managers immune from 'Fair Dismissal?
at 09:35 11 Dec 2024

I don't think we need to concern ourselves with the terms of individual contracts.

Buy good players, sell poor ones.

Try to get and keep performing managers. Sack failing ones.

It's pretty basic and (take away all the bells, whistles, agents and sell on clauses) and it's always been the same.

Lost 80% of games this season. That's all anyone needs to know.

Rather that than aquatic annelids attached to my Duke of Argylls.

Ouch.

Positives (if only a few)for next year
at 16:27 9 Dec 2024

If they are sticking with Martin now, then they're almost, if not already, at the point, where they will look even more like complete muppets if they then sack him later.

That means not only is he here until the end of the season but, logically, they'd have to give him, what, 10 games in the Championship too.

That means we've most likely got him and this for another year.

I can't bring myself to think about that...

Where does Martin rank in the league table of PL failure ?
at 16:21 9 Dec 2024

https://www.fourfourtwo.com/features/the-worst-ever-premier-league-managers

With 1 win in 15 and an 80% loss record, Martin definitely makes this list.

They've got Jones at 2nd but he only had 8 games and Frank de Boer only 4, so they seem a little unfair, given some of the disastrous records also on display.

On current form, Martin must be in the top 10 worst PL managers of all time and he's climbing the table every week.

He’s getting very defensive now (excuse the pun). Stupid supporters making Lumley play a long ball and look what happens.

Short passes out is the way, you idiots, and it’s been working so well.

If only we could see that and could worship him and his system.

There are few more experienced in the PL than him.

If he can’t keep us up, no one can.

And perhaps no one can.

These owners are absolute ditherers. Ralph, Jones, Selles, Martin. Always too late. God forbid they ever have to run a business.

This is right. Because the quality in the bottom quarter of the PL is generally not great, it doesn't take that much to avoid relegation.

At the moment, it would take more than we've got but that can change quickly and there is still along way to go.

No points from the next two games could/should signal the end of the RM experiment.

For all those Ralph lovers out there, a reminder that as recently as April 2022 Chelsea beat us 0-6 at home.

I predict that even with this massively depleted squad, we will do better than that.

Southampton At Brighton The Verdict
at 18:54 2 Dec 2024

I am not quite sure what you are saying. When you say 'if you have to draw a line on a screen', are you saying that the system shouldn't be drawing lines on screens, because if you are I agree with you, but this system does and that's why I say that the system is useless/not fit for purpose.

I am not arguing that some kind of video review is necessarily bad. I'm saying that this VAR system is bad. And if you defend VAR, you defend this system, not some imaginary good one that they didn't introduce.

So what needs to change is not simply 'the way it is implemented'. They need to ditch this failed system and (maybe) start again.

And if they did start again, how about this for a set of principles to adhere to...

1. Level is onside. And 'level' is not an exact science but every linesman in the world who works without VAR has to judge it, and can. Any system needs to respect that 'level is onside' rule. This one doesn't.

2. The system should be there to rule our errors that the onfield officials could reasonably/possibly have avoided. E.g. Out of sight handball goals, or punches to the kidney behind their backs. It should not be allowed to view things in a way, and at a level of accuracy that no onfield could possibly see. So no slow-mos, no zoom ins and no f*cking lines!

3. Given that it is only meant to be spotting howlers, these should not be difficult to see, and if they are difficult to spot then they're not howlers. Give them 1 minute to be sure that it's a howler and if they are not sure within 1 minute then that's it, no review.

It won't be perfect, but it will hopefully intervene about 10% of the time that it does now and it will do only what it is meant to do. And maybe we can go back to celebrating most goals in real time.

But before any of this can happen, they need to ditch the pig's ear that they are trying and failing to make a silk purse out of, because this system is not fixable.

It's the fact that a 'review' system which is intended to reduce errors actually makes its own errors (often worse ones) that really gets me. How can they not see how f*cking ridiculous that is.

That and the fact that 'level' is no longer onside.

And, of course, that it takes the edge off every single goal celebration.
