| News Comment | Saints Not Afraid Of Sacking Russell Martin Even If They Have To Pay at 06:12:37
This is a staggering amount of compensation, if this figure is true and does raise the question how such abject failure can be rewarded this way ? It does sound a bit high to me, and I don't consider 'Giveme Sport' that reliable source. Why did Saints feel the need to reward `Martin with a big new contract ? We scraped up and he had no proven record in Premiership. Questions were being raised early on whether his style of play would be a success in Premier. I guess we now know. |
| News Comment | Russell Martin Reveals The Only Opinion That Counts at 21:32:41
I think your assumption is right, RM doesn't care at all what fans think, when He says only his bosses views matter. Do I believe him when he says he doesn't read social media, no. In previous interviews he has made comments that suggest he does read articles on social media. I think his comments just validate the arrogance of this guy. |
| News Comment | Jack Stephens Deserves Saints Fans Respect At This Time at 09:56:11
Not sure I do understand why Stephens reacted the way he did, as you suggest. it was an awful tackle that got him sent off, and then he compounded this with a foul mouth rant at the ref. What did he expect. As for deriving respect for his length of service. Yes, he has been here a long time and there is not another club in this division where he would have got the contracts and salary that Saints have paid him. Even when he has been loaned out over the years, he has ended up mainly being a bench warmer and none of those clubs ever followed up with an offer to buy him. I agree he is a useful squad player, but that is it. He is definitely one of Martin's favourites and I agree the rest of the squad will see this, especially when he is 'shoe horned' into positions that are not are not suitable at the expense of others. |
| News Comment | The Knives Are Out For Russell Martin In The Media But Do They Have Substance at 09:34:20
Reference comment "I don't think he has actually said that, what he did say was that he would not change his footballing philosophy". I think the comment he made, "Live by the sword etc", suggests he will not change. Many of the shortcomings and reasons for the defeats are down to Martin's philosophy. If the players aren't good enough and keep making same mistakes, why continue do the same ? It is not just about Martin's philosophy about possession based football. He never seems to pick his best team and is too loyal, preferring to 'shoe horn' his favourites in and playing players out of their position. Like most on here, I am prepared to give give him a chance, but I fear his arrogance and ego will be his down fall. |
| News Comment | Southampton Learn Opponents In The Carabao Cup 3rd Round at 10:29:28
The draw for Caribo cup is farcical, with top team exempt from playing each other because they have to play too many games. It must be rough being a top player. They never put out their 1st 11, and these are the teams that have the squads that are best equipped to cope. |
| News Comment | Russell Martin Lays Out Vision After New Contract Signed at 16:59:14
Whilst he achieved what club set out at start of season, which was promotion. With our squad we should have finished in top 3. Last season, at times we looked very average and there was a number of occasions where his decision making (e.g subs , selections and loyalty to players under performing) was called into question. I didn't see the need to rush into an extension at this stage, when he still had 2 years on his current deal. A bit premature I think. |
| News Comment | Southampton Sell Out Wembley Tickets In Just Two Days at 15:12:06
I was in queue, got down to 20 mins and then it added another hour on top ! Managed to get one, I think it is in Neasden, it is so far back. That coupled with a few beers before, I could struggle to see the game. Not complaining, grateful I got one. |
| News Comment | No Togetherness No Character No Fight at 11:59:35
If this is what Martin thinks, then he is more deluded than I thought. What bizarre and crazy statements to make after a performance like that. It is well documented my feelings about Jack Stephens, but putting that aside , why did he feel the need to say we would not have lost 5-0 if Jack had played ? That will only divide the squad (and fans) even more ? He really has lost the plot. I see BBC have an article saying Swansea are suing over breach of contract. Can we not just give him back ? |
| News Comment | Southampton At Birmingham City The Verdict at 08:02:25
The defence has been all over the place since RM stated messing around with the successful pairing of HB and Bednarek and his insistence on always trying to find a place for Jack Stephens. |
| News Comment | Danny Ings Doesn't Want To Drop To Championship Claim at 13:50:09
I can't see clubs queuing up for him, unless they get him on the cheap and West Ham will want a big chunk of his wages paid. Given how he has performed when he has played for West Ham this season and Villa last season, I think he is flattering himself about dropping into the Championship. We are better off without him after the way he left. |
| News Comment | Southampton V AZ Alkmaar The Verdict at 07:16:10
I really don't see this style of passion football working for us, a) we don't score enough goals and B) we routinely get caught playing around with it and conceding. It's fine for teams like Man C who have some of the best players around. I fear that even if Martin does get it working with the team, we will have lost too much ground against the top teams. Finally why do we keep taking about how Swansea 'nearly' got into the top 6 as if this is some sort of achievement ? |
| News Comment | Southampton At Leicester City The Preview at 12:54:08
Nick, you call it 3-2 , no matter how you dress it up, the suggestion is a back 5, which we all know does not work. I really hope RH doesn't revert to this again today. |
| News Comment | Jack Stephens Linked With Move To Watford at 15:13:09
Best news I have heard all year ! I hear many saying what a great servant etc he has been, but who wouldn't be on the contract he had. No other club would have ever offered him anything close to the deals Saints gave him. |
| News Comment | Villarreal Game To Decide Who Will Be Number 1 For Saints at 10:46:08
Is this game really the decider to see who is Number 1 ? Anyone who has been following Saints will know that McCarthy is just not good enough, even as 3rd choice. If Ralf needs this game to decide his number 1, he really does have problems. Just because McCarthy is more experienced than Bazanu, does that justify putting him in as Number 1 to keep making the same mistakes ? |
| News Comment | Saints In Pole Position For Chelsea Defender at 09:24:25
I would have any of these 'suggested' CB's ahead Stephens. I question the validity of Stephens being only experienced CB if Lyanco and JB leave. Yes, he has played loads of games, but that doesn't make him good enough for Premiership. He is a Championship player at best, so replacing him with a quality Championship player doesn't seem to be that risky ? We know what Stephens has to offer, and it is not good enough. |
