Tired of football cliches in the media? 15:40 - Feb 28 with 1687 viewscoolranger

Do others notice just how often the same phrases or statements are used by football media, pundits and players / managers? Let me jog some memories....

1. Ever noticed how invariably the full term 'the football club' is used in description on radio in particular, rather than just 'the club', when it's obvious what the subject matter is? Tiresome

2. 'At the end of the day blah blah blah....' - just so lazy and bland to use this. Try something different for heaven's sake, like 'ultimately', 'eventually' etc

Any other contributions?

My other half started replicating a game she saw the characters on an episode of Frasier playing. They were all watching an episode of Antiques Roadshow and every time someone mentioned the word "veneer" they would all shout "Veneer" and take a drink of their favourite tipple.

She started doing this whilst watching footballers being interviewed after a game and it's quite addictive! The three things we look out for are:

1) "Hopefully" - Anywhere in a sentence;
2) "Definitely" - anywhere in a sentence; or
3) Immediately after having been asked a question the player starts to scratch (a) the back of his head (b) just behind his ear or (c) his cheek just as he begins to answer. (You'll find that the vast majority actually do this and will then continue to do this for each answer they give!).

Needless to say she can get quite tipsy, which of course I don't take advantage of! (mot mot mot!)

Actually come to think of it Roberto Martinez has become a master at trotting out positive cliches about Wigan after YET ANOTHER setback. You have to admire his optimism even in the midst of NINE consecutive defeats, after first beating Rangers 2-0 at home of course.

I don't know who is worse, us or Wigan? Oh well, we'll probably play them next season.

That's brilliant. God only knows what he'd make of today'ssensationalism.

Thanks for that, Chubbs. I was practically cheering by the end!

Dean Sturridge on the Fox Sports refers to every foreign player by their nationality every time.

Footballers saying they want to 'stay and fight for a place' when they really mean 'noone else will give me more dough'.

I think it was sturridge commentating on saturday's game, so annoying, peddling out endless drivel. I honestly turned the volume off on the feed I was so fed up with it.
Another line I keep hearing is "As I said before" Did you? Don't repeat yourself then.

What a very pleasant young man.

Haha was just about to post that - "a bit of quality in the final third".

That's a more recent one and is guaranteed to pop up in EVERY SINGLE F--KING BROADCAST

Agree on Neville, think he's been excellent. Theyll get to him in the end though

A new one that's creeping in is players that "put in a (good) shift"

The endless use of the term 'quality'. Wenger uses it after and before every game, as do almost all pundits.
