Can I just say how good the referee was today. He was absolutely brilliant, if Clive doesn’t give him an 8-9/10, then nobody deserves one.

He let so many 50/50s go and wave play on no matter who won them. He was a breath of fresh air.

Fully agree
Daughter said mid second half how little she had noticed the red, which is always a good sign

Sunderland fans might not agree, but I thought he pitched his tolerance of physical contact right and stuck to it rather than hopping about. No doubt about the red card and extra points for the early yellow card for their keeper.

Great name as well in Ben Toner.

He's the one they had to switch out from reffing the first Blackpool game with fans back after the boycott under Oyston right?

Lino in front of the Paddocks was shocking all game though!

And booked the keeper at the first sign of time wasting.

Very good performance, let the game flow and a good amount of physicality. Got the red card spot on, didn’t rush to issue it, took his time to make the right decision! Better than most others in this league?

I also think it helped that there were two sides trying to play football today - made his job a lot easier.

There were a few Mackems that weren’t happy with the refs performance moaning on the bbc page.According to some of their most blinkered fans we’re a dirty team that resorted to cheap fouls to stop them playing football. And some said that the red card was only worth a yellow at most.

I may be mistaken but I don’t think Clive has given a 10 since clatenburg in the play off semi ?

A thick 8. Thought he was very good.

The fact I didn't notice him at all is a pretty good sign. More like that please, was able to watch a football match rather than a one man refereeing show.

Unlike the other spineless refs who give the s**housing keepers the obligatory 94th minute booking when it has no effect whatsoever.
He let go some of our more rigorous challenges of which there was nothing wrong with but we’ve seen them given by other refs.
Thought he was the best I’ve seen this season .

And booked the keeper at the first sign of time wasting.

...but not at the second, third or fourth time.

He was definitely better than most, but that bar is as low as the one that says Celar played better yesterday and this season we are better than Ainsworth's team...

Can we go out yet?

Think the praise is a bit ott. Having given the keeper a yellow on 70 odd minutes, he then did nothing to stop him pissin about for the next twenty five. Smyth, rightly or wrongly, got free kicks that he wouldn't usually get. There were a few inconsistencies in that what was a foul one minute, wasn't the next. I would go no higher than a six.

The Ref annoyed me by being so fussy about the ball being in precisely the right spot at corners and free kicks. He wasted time himself doing this and then gave a very short 5 minutes added time after their repeated time wasting particularly from their GK even with his yellow card, and the many substitutions including in his 5 minutes added. Got the red card right I think.

Funny about perceptions. I thought he did this less than a lot of Championship refs. Also he didn't spend a lot of time debating every decision - just a word on the run and move on. I much prefer that as it encourages players to do it all the more and ends up wasting eons of time.

As said he gave Smyth a couple of soft FKs but overall I liked him.

Not saying it's right, but has a keeper ever got two yellows for timewasting?

Probably not,so whether the yellow card comes in the 1st minute or the 94th,it doesn’t make any difference to how much time the keeper can waste. He was holding the back his leg a lot during the 2nd half and I’m surprised that he didn’t feign an injury to waste even more time.
Funny how we always seem to get 7 or 8 mins added on when we’re holding on away from home but only 4 minutes at home to Coventry and 5 at home against Sunderland. But we rarely looked like scoring in the previous 30 minutes so I’m not sure the extra minutes would’ve produced any reward.

I thought keeper trod a very fine line after the yellow card. I'm not surprised ref wouldn't show him a 2nd yellow, though.

Genuine question - what happened to the 6 second rule that used to apply to goal keepers? Did it ever actually exist?

After he had been booked, there were a couple of occasions where the keeper picked the ball up and then didn't release it for about 20 secs. As others have said, I'm not surprised the ref didn't give him a 2nd yellow, but I don't think he even warned him.
