Saints V Brighton Matchday Thread on 14:05 - Mar 14 with 1320 views | ElijahK | Ok sorry but that Sheffield United game was simply just a fluke result after what we saw today! I mean questions do need to start being asked as we’ve won 1, drawn 1 and lost the 10! Over our last 12 (which is practically a third of our season!) games! And yeah he got us to first for the first time ever, but in the end we lost 9-0 AGAIN! And have somehow ended up in a relegation scrap!? I mean we didn’t play well whatsoever today and we’re now only 4 points ahead of Brighton! For me it’s all down to these next games as if we were to loose to a Bournemouth team that’s 5 points out of a championship playoff spot in the FA cup or can’t beat Burnley then that’s just too much! I mean nobody played that well, and hopefully it’s also shown to all those fans going on about Forster that the only reason he kept any clean sheets is simply because he has 8 shots to deal with in our 6 previous games, and should’ve saved that first goal for certain! Sheesh I’d loved to have seen Forster in goal for that Man City game!

Does relegation really matter? I’d say other than Ings, JWP and maybe Armstrong and KWP the rest are championship players. We actually should have a very strong championship team, as broadly that’s this team’s correct level. The reason for this is solely Gao and Kat. But it looks like Ralph has now completely given up and is waiting for his pay off.

Saints V Brighton Matchday Thread on 14:17 - Mar 14 with 1258 views | Sadoldgit | We don’t think we have enough in the tank in the second half of games so we have to do enough to win them in the first half. Today we were fortunate not to go in a goal down. Hopefully we will do better when we have a week between games but it was very frustrating to see no urgency until the 89th minute and you have to wonder if that is down to fatigue.

More like dodgy tactics, and no faith in those tactics from the players. They aint too tired to cross sideways and back. Sadly, Ralph has run out of ideas.

Saints V Brighton Matchday Thread on 12:29 - Mar 14 by dirk_doone | Great finish from Adams. He is a natural goal scorer. He always hits the ball hard so there is no chance of stopping it. [Post edited 14 Mar 2021 12:30]

Unless he hits it straight at the keeper. Harsh to criticise somebody who's scored 3 in 3 but if Adams wants to be a top notch Premier League striker he really needs to develop some finesse. For that big second half chance he needed to place it. Trying to break the back of the net isn't the only way to score. [Post edited 14 Mar 2021 15:00]

He was hopeless, maybe only Bertrand was worse.

So did Hughes and Pellegrino though. They all run out of ideas because it's impossible with the resources they have. And as for being tired, some of them were rested at Man City to make them fresh today! They just arn't giving their all for whatever reason. No urgency, no care.

Coupled with Ings & Bertrand not signing contracts - those "reasons" could well be behind the scenes, i.e. the manager himself. Who really knows? On a day when only KWP played well & Diallo was okay - the rest looked beaten as they walked out the tunnel for kick off.

Very good point. Our fans are ok. In fact, I think the fans would have demanded more of the players today and might have driven them on to an equaliser.

Saints V Brighton Matchday Thread on 13:54 - Mar 14 by cocklebreath | Awful. Can’t think of one decent player today, maybe Diallo |
He was supposed to be our defensive midfield replacement for Romeu, tackling, getting stuck in and breaking up Brighton's attacks. I didn't see him do any of that. He was about effective as a powder puff. So what was good about that? I'd take Harrison Reed over him any day of the week. Reed may not be quite as good as Romeu but he'd be a decent replacement for him. We don't need another midfielder who can make short passes but doesn't tackle. We've got plenty of them already. What we lacked today was a Romeu-type player. We let Brighton stroll around totally unchallenged in midfield today. Diallo did absolutely nothing to stop them. [Post edited 14 Mar 2021 16:39]

He was ok in the first half but for some reason he like the rest gave up in the second half Seems to be the story if our season having a poor second half, the difference being we were playing very well in the first halves unlike today when we were abject at best

Believe it or not there has been a lot of research on the difference crowds make on football. I’ve posted it here. Reality is it’s negligible to no difference at all. We don’t like to hear that because we feel that we’re influencing the result at a game or a manager’s decisions. The real difference is the quality of the players. In a season played almost exclusively with no fans at stadiums we’ve seen no difference in league positions to what would have been expected with fans. It’s odd that Nick on this site constantly overstates the difference fans make.

Sog with the greatest of respect, I don't know what game or games you've been watching lately but fatigue is only a small part of the issue if it even is an issue, so predictable play with no players running past their last man, sideways passes that end with a backpass to the keeper and a lack of heart are the key issues, also poor tactics and a consistent lack of a plan B. I see of happy clapper.com all is still bright and blissfully ignorant of facts and reality, well you can't say I didn't tell you.

We have massive debts, a huge loan (which I believe was secured against the stadium) and a squad of players on mega wages who would be very difficult to sell on. Relegation would be catastrophic. Unless, of course, you like the idea of plummeting through the leagues and groundsharing with Eastliegh.

I agree. You only have to look down the road at Pompey to see the long-term misery that relegation from the top flight can bring to a club which is already in debt. It can take decades to recover.
