Poll: Has the Ross Stewart deal already paid off as Nick says?

We were top of the league a few times in the 1980s, even for the best part of a season but I think the last time was the 1988-89 season. There was one calendar year when we were top on points over the 12 months but, unfortunately, it was for the second half of one season and the first half of another.

We were either 1st or second around the time when we went on that run including the 8-0 v Sunderland, 2015 about November?

I've got the Football Echo in the attic somewhere after the 1-0 win at Middlesboro which must have been 82/83 ish as Keehan was playing?

I think it was the 1983/84 season when we were top for a while and ultimately finished second but my memory may be playing tricks.

But, as we were also top for several weeks in the 1988/89 season, it can't be.

We were top right up until April in the 1981/82 season.

We've been top a couple of times this century, maybe even three.

As ever, the last success in most competitions on the south coast relates to a blue jersey.

And then there is reality. Saints are 3rd in the Premier League while Little Pompey are two leagues and 48 places below us, having just lost their 'natural derby' to Charlton 0-2.

In the entire history of the Premier League, the highest Little Pompey ever finished in it was 8th and they only managed that once.

And then there is reality. Your club haven't been top since the mid eighties, over 35 years ago, the only high point in your clubs history, whereas Pompey have been top in four separate decades, the last time quite recently.

Oh yes.

They are not even the biggest team in the third tier.

Anyway, Little Pompey fans will be relieved that next week they will avoid having to face the 'big boys' in League One and be in the First Round of the FA Cup along with their local rivals in the Greater Havant conurbation: Havant & Waterlooville. But, deluded as they are, even they must know that Havant & Waterlooville are the more likely team to make it through to the Second Round. To be honest, the Worzels will probably be relieved to get knocked out of the cup so they can avoid what they fear most: having to face Southampton again.

Pompey went top briefly in August 2003 after they had a Saturday lunchtime kick off, topped it briefly after 5 games in 2006/07, so thats twice in the last 68 years then

Do Wigan & Pompey sing about their FA Cup wins to each other when they play, they probably don't but I bet you do

Saints have and are seen as the "biggest" club South of London. It is true that we have underachieved in terms of trophies. We should have more trophies when you consider that we are ever present in the top league. OK Wigan, Pompey, Wimbledon, Swansea etc etc may have won equal or more trophies but Southampton are a much more recognised team than them all in terms of being in the top 8 in the country, PL points wise. We have got to many finals, but we are short of the trophies we should have to match our actual credibility. If you look at the other 7 clubs in the top 8 in the country, they all have more trophies. We have come close, but for the size and standing of our club, we need more trophies.

What decades are these then ? Does anyone actually remember ?

The 20's - Nope - 3rd tier
The 10's - Nope - only half a season in top flight and finished bottom
The 00's - Promising - 7 years in the top flight - highest place was it 8th ?
The 90's - No chance - not in the top flight
The 80's - No chance - 1 season in the top flight - straight back down
The 70's - No chance - 2nd, 3rd and 4th tiers
The 60's - No chance - 2nd and 3rd tiers

Think you won the league in 48-49 and 49-50 so there are 2 decades for you in a 2 season purple patch, 70 years ago. No idea about the 30's or 20's or anything before that - but don't think the football league started until the 20's anyway.

You just don't seem to like the top table. No wonder my daughter questions why you are our rivals from a footballing perspective. This is her 10th season of going to football and in that time, we have played you once at home in the league. The rest of the time you have comfortably been 2 and sometimes 3 divisions away.

If you are not top at the end of a day, it doesn't officially count, and you can see from their list of league positions listed above their results that the highest position they finished any day in August 2003 was 3rd:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2003%E2%80%9304_Portsmouth_F.C._season

So, in fact, in the last 60+ years, Little Pompey were only top of the league once, for a few days in September, 14 years ago, while Saints have been top a few times and for several months, and even as late as March.

Worzel 130's bullsh!tting found out yet again.
