As well as raising more telly money and Intertoto cupping the old "meaningless friendly", It's supposed to help stop the likes of Wales increasing their FIFA ranking by not playing many friendlies. Apparently you can still play the system by losing on purpose to go down a group to have an easier passage to a possible tournament place if you mess up regular qualifying. Watching teams try to do this will be entertaining.
