Not sure how reliable the source is but allegedly Chelsea have made an enquiry for him.

Could perhaps be a good a source of income if we play our cards right?

I don't understand how youth transfers work but I was under the impression that under 16s can be signed regardless of anything we do, and a nominal fee decided at a tribunal? If that's the case why have Chelsea allegedly made a bid?

Unless things have changed then EPPP lets those 'top' academies stockpile young footballers for next to nothing. They pay out if they ever sell them or they make first team appearances. The latter is highly unlikely in Chelsea's case.

Completely right.

Clubs like ours will get a fixed fee of £3,000 for every year at a club between 9 and 11 and between £12,500 and £40,000 for every year at a club between 12 and 16 depending on the academy category.

That's not much.

Further fixed fees are payable on the player making first-team appearances in any senior competition for every 10 appearances up to 100.

The maximum payable is £1.41m being a player who moves just before his 16th birthday and who makes 100 premier league appearances.

We'll get a small fraction of that for Matheson when he goes given he is 14 and we won't know if we get any appearance money unless he makes it in around 8-10 years time!

So did this happen when we lost Connor Ronan to Wolves?

I think the same rules weren't in place 3 and a half years ago and we weren't yet a category 3 Academy at the time so it didn't apply. We definitely received £100,000 from Wolves and hopefully add ons to come.

Did he not sign a pro deal with us making the FFP irrelevant anyway? Seem to remember it being the case that he signed the pro contract the day before he left or something close to that.

If he does sign for Chelsea and makes his debut for them in the league cup in 5 years time, whilst fully appreciating the pride his family must feel at this, can we please not pretend that this will in any way be a Dale success story.

Clubs can (and have) the ability to do deals for youngsters without resorting to the model set down.

There's often some quid pro quo between selling club and buying big club that puts more money up front or offers another advantage for being named "preferred bidder"

We'll never stand in a child's way as it is good for them and us if our academy progresses then.

The St Cuthbert's final appearance in the English National Schools Cup in 2009 was a good example of how scouts picked off a lot of players from both sides - some who continued to look to have good careers. We did much better for Conor Ronan than the tribunal "formula" may have suggested if we had wanted to argue.
