This was his starting position when the corner was taken. He is standing about two yards from where the ball was headed in.
The ball can be seen about twelve foot in the air when it drops in the centre of the six yard box.
There was no obstruction preventing him from coming for the ball.
It was a straightforward punch or catch situation. I remember him coming for far more difficult corners in the game than this.
Another example of him making some wonderful saves, one which may be the save of the season, and then he lets himself down with a simple mistake which costs us points.
The answer is yes he should have dealt with it (I pointed this out on another thread) . A goalkeeper cannot allow a cross to drop in his 6 yard box and not get there first. Can Mawson do better? Yes Can Olsson block the runner if he is concentrating? Yes However, the keeper has the advantage (what with being able to use his arms and all) and shouldn't be leaving his centre-half to contest that header, because; 1 - the odds are more in Lascelle's favour competing against Mawson instead of Fabianski & 2 - if Mawson doesn't win the header Fabianski is going to have a very hard time keeping it out ('cos it is a header from the 6 yard box).
Fab should be taking charge in the 6 yard box and coming to punch it, Lascelle (nor any other centre-back for that matter) is not getting a header in on goal in that scenario...and he should be aiming his punches out wide.
It was poor goalkeeping, despite some earlier good saves.

PC seemed very disappointed with the nature of the way we conceded the goal on MOTD.
I have the feeling he is the type manager not afraid to hand out a decent bollocking.
Anyway we might be defending against Llorente on Saturday, any similar chance to that (or the 2 headed chances Tammy missed against Southampton & Utd) will end up in the back of the net.
No need to worry set piece goals count for less according to certain posters on PS .....

Llorente will be rubbing his hands together from watching not just the goal, but the way Mawson was beat by Joselu in the air which Fabianksi made a wonder save to stop us going behind. I can't see Llorente getting much time though.
As for the original poll, I can't see what Fabianski could have done, it came in with pace and was relatively flat. I do actually sympathise with Mawson for the goal, it's not a lot you can do when a big centre half literally has a free run at it from the 18 yard box while you are on your heels on the six yard box. He was f*cked as soon as no one blocked the run.

There's an argument for Fab coming for that ball, but having seen it now on TV, it should be said that it was an outswinger moving away from him and perfectly onto the nut of Lascelles.
It was one of those things; a perfect delivery and an opposition player who had an unimpeded run and jump against Mawson, who himself had to jump from a standing start. No contest.

If only we could have done a few outswingers from a corner.

Cant remember Vorm having a go at many, he always stood on his line.
Problem is Clement insisting on zonal marking it's easier for a forward to get a running jump than defender to have a standing jump.if you mark and opponent at least you can hassle him put him off balance but zonal marking is rubbish...how some coaches go along with this beats me

You'd swear the way people criticise zonal marking that no one had ever conceded a goal with man to man marking.

Fabianski sizes up the cross and realises it is a belter outsinger and he may not make it. If it was more of a loop and straight the keeper may have come. Defenders error. Delivery is quality. Fabianski is not going to chase them.

I've a memory like a sieve so can't remember what we were doing last season, but we had a fantastic record against set pieces. Only 1 goal conceded from a corner since PC came in. Mind you, we don't have Llorente nutting them away now.
