In normal times the words "transfer window" "ash" and "move" would be treated by many as no more than a ploy to get an improvement on his contract and "it is understood" would be treated with a pinch of salt however in the current climate almost anything is now believable.

Very high risk, if true. Fed would be been sent off if yesterday's game was in the Prem, and I felt Ash was the glue that kept our existing defense together. Alarm bells are ringing for me. £!0m is not a lot in the new market.
Thanks Ash on 07:31 - Jul 31 with 2117 views | jack247 | £10m is not good money for us unless they invest it back in the team. Nor is getting him off the wage bill any use if all it means is the Americans save a few quid for themselves. Anyone think we will actually replace him, or will it just be Amat takes his place and Van der Hoorn takes Amats on the bench? I'm all for cutting costs with the likes of Gomis and Eder, but we need some quality brought in as well.

Particularly since Fernandez was an area of obvious concern last season. In an ideal world we'd have upgraded on him this summer.

Agreed. Maybe it will be Amat and VdH with Fed on the bench then. Either way, they have just weakened the one area we were reasonably well covered in. How about we stop fannying around with cost cutting for a bit and sign a fking striker?
Thanks Ash on 07:46 - Jul 31 with 2055 views | giantstoneater | Whether 10 million is good deal for us for a 32 year old defender is debateable but Ash isn't just a defender he is our captain our rock and a leader of men who leads by example on and off the pitch we lose him we will be skating on thin ice. I cannot conceal my contempt for those who sold up it seems we may be gearing up for a battle on and off the pitch very sad after all that has been accomplished. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Thanks Ash on 00:04 - Jul 31 by Aquinas | Good business for Everton if they sell Stones for £50 million and get Ash for £10 million. Good for business for us if Ash goes for £10 million and Amat shows the form he had last season. Despite the above, I find it very worrying that the owners are allowing this to happen without placating the fans with a marquee signing. |
Good points, well made ......... also a concern - if true of course - around timing, well run clubs balance key departures with arrivals, not only to keep fans onside but to stop the situation arising that as the clock ticks down all other clubs/agents know we are short/desperate for signings so both fees & wages go up when we ask.

I doubt they are overly bothered about placating fans. It's just a business transaction for them and the vast majority of the money comes from tv. They won't care if we come 8th playing like Barcelona or 17th playing Monkball.
Thanks Ash on 08:17 - Jul 31 with 1917 views | dailew | Some perspective. This would be the biggest ever xfer fee for an outfield player of his age. No-one older has been xferred for more.

Thanks Ash on 08:29 - Jul 31 with 1857 views | nantywatcher | As a leader an absolute collossus the best ever. As a central defender I would doubt he would be a first choice for FG for most of this coming season. Sleep walks too much at times and guaranteed to make at least two horrific blunders EVERY game. But it has been a privilege to watch him over the years
Thanks Ash on 08:30 - Jul 31 with 1856 views | Big_Phil | There are a number of ways of looking at this 1: Disaster - Our 'rock'...Mr Swansea on the field etc.....dreadfully weakening the spine of the team...a true Leader leaving the fold 2: Good Business - For every good game Ash has had in the last 2 seasons he has had a bad game (arguably)....witness CF after CF getting free headers from corners. Given his age why wouldn't we snap up £10M 3: Good Riddance - We have all heard the stories over the past few months that 'if we do not sign Joey, I'm off...'. Well, Billy Big B0ll0cks you are not bigger than the club, and people are getting fed up with the annual 'Ash is off' nonsense only for a bigger wage to come your way.... 4: Asset Stripping - If nothing else was going on re: Ayew / everyone else then would we be as concerned?? Given everything else that is happening though will this make other senior players throw the toys out.....with things spiralling downwards at a rate of knots 5: If we had a marquee signing for CF now the wage bill is clear....would we fret??? I am lurching between (1) and (2)....I don't feel I am anywhere in between at the moment The next 2 weeks will define our football club for the next 10 years - sensaltionism, Yes....but that's my opinion

Which is fine, but selling your captain and best defender is not good business unless you adequately replace him. At least from a footballing point of view.
Thanks Ash on 08:41 - Jul 31 with 1793 views | exiledinenglandjack | He didn't have the greatest seasons for us last year and wasn't great in the euros either. I think he's been a great servant for the club and will go down as one of our greats but we can't let him unsettle the days if those rumours are actually true. Get Chester in to replace him and I think we'll be OK
Thanks Ash on 08:44 - Jul 31 with 1775 views | Dr_Winston | The issue is not the players going out. The issue is the players coming in, the lack of them, and the increasingly common belief that self - appointed DoF Huw Jenkins is incapable of replacing like for like, or like for better without significant and since Tutumlu unwanted input from his managers or coaching staff. £10m for Ash is something that plenty of people would have snapped your hands off for last season. Likewise a healthy eight figure fee for Andre "he just doesn't suit the side like" Ayew. Looks like increasingly poor business if all we can apparently come up with to replace them is Peter f*cking Crouch.

He's very good at some things, not so good at others. His lack of comfort on the ball is shocking for an £8m International defender.

You might be right but we would need far more than just van der Hoorn as backup. I'd be a lot happier about this if we could get someone like James Chester in. I'd prefer better but I would say he's a realistic target as he's not a first choice at WBA.

That's why it's such a strange buy from Everton (if it's true). £10m and they'll probably get one season out of him. Would they be paying him significantly more than he gets with us? It's not he has a chance of winning anything there.

We should be able to buy a good younger CH for £10M, but then so could Everton...
