Southampton Have Former RB Leibzig Coach On Radar

According to media reports Saints are mulling over a move for former RB Leipzig coach Domenico Tedesco and Italian bord German citizen who has had a meteoric rise up the coaching ladder.

Saints are said to be reviewing the managerial situation and one of those being considered is Domenico Tedesco, the 37 year old has recently been sacked by RB Leipzig, after only 9 months in the job, despite leading them to 4th place in the Bundesliga, the semi finals of the Europa League and winning the German Cup

A bad start to this season however saw him sacked at the end of September and he has not yet currently took another job.

Although he worked for various German teams in their youth set ups since 2008 at the age of just 23 with slow progress through the pecking order, his rise has been meteoric over the past 6 years, he started as a head coach only in 2016 when he was appointed to the job for Bundesliga 2 side Erzgebirge Aue, although the season was not record breaking with a 14th place at the end of it, for the 2017/18 season he was appointed by German top flight side Schalke 04.

In his first season he guided them to 2nd place in the Bundesliga, however the second season was not such a success and after being beaten 7-0 by Manchester City and 7 games without a win he was sacked in March 2019.

Next stop was Spartak Moscow just after the start of the 2019/20 season's start, his record there was generally good, in his second season he took them to 2nd place and he was popular with the fans, however he had already announced he would not stay beyond his initial two year contract due to the impact of Covid on his family life.

It was back to Germany on 9 December 2021, taking over the head coach position at RB Leipzig, ironically the club that had been Ralph Hasenhuttl's previous employers before arriving at St Mary's.

On paper Tedesco looks the type of manager that Saints would be interested in, but there are some warning signs, he is still at 37 very young and with little experience still, secondly he has never stayed at a club for long, either of his own choice as at Spartak Moscow or due to being sacked.

I would think that Saints will be considering their moves now, I would think that there preferred route is that Ralph Hasenhuttl wins a few games and means they don't have to take action, the new owners seem to have a plan and that plan is not sacking a manager at every little set back.

But ultimately football is a results driven game and after 4 straight defeats, Hasenhuttl is under pressure, with only a month to go before the break for the World Cup, I do not expect them to do much before then.
