Southampton Agree Gavin Bazunu Deal With Manchester City
Wednesday, 15th Jun 2022 17:20

Latest reports suggest that Ex Portsmouth loanee and Manchester City keeper Gavin Bazunu is about to sign for Saints in a deal that could be worth up to £18.5 million with add on's with the player said to be in Southampton for a medical.

Gavin Bazunu has been linked with Saints for the past few weeks, but if the latest reports are to be believed then the deal could be done and dusted within hours rather than weeks.

The 20 year old is said to be having a medical very soon after Saints and Manchester City agreed terms for the keeper that with add on's could be worth up to £18.5 million.

That doesn't mean that is the price that Saints are paying, the initial fee will be significantly lower, perhaps as low as £10 million or so but that could increase if certain benchmarks are met.

Some may ask why the deal will be done now rather than wait until July 1st ?

The answer is that for Bazunu who will be on a relatively low salary at Manchester City the potential bonus payable on July 1st if he stays till then, could be less that the extra amount he will earn at St Mary's in the next fortnight over and above what he is being paid now by City.

From a Saints perspective paying Bazunu for the next fortnight will be extra but it will mean the deal can be done now and is in the bag and not open to being hijacked by another club.

Great news.

In other news - you don't need to make reference to 1st July loyalty bonus' in every single summer transfer article - WE GET IT...

It's always a little risky with young Goalkeepers. One spanking and the confidenvce is gone, from Keith Grainger to Angus Gunn.

Anything is better than McCarthy!
He'll have learned how to play under pressure during his spell at Pompey - their defence was extra poor! He kept several clean sheets. Plus he has international experience during a poor run and has looked good.
If we manage to get a steadying influence in central defence he won't suffer like Gunn; and turn into a special buy

No way are we spending that amount on a GK just to warm the bench behind McCarthy. Getting the deal done now will mean he has a full preseason with the squad to get used to the defence and hopefully impress Ralph enough that he starts as No1 for the first game of the season. Potential to be the long term answer to that position.

I really hope we havnt blown the transfer budget on a back up/ future first team keeper. Will we now have to sell JWP to get the Experienced Centre back , Striker ( 6' + who scores goals) , Centre Midfielder ( ball winner with some height) we desperately need .
I really hope those positions havnt been filled with Jack Stephens (FFS) Shane Long ( omg) Diallo ( average squad player)
