With the ever growing injury list in midfield and form issued I'd have Gorgeous Ronnie Edwards as the holding player in midfield. Can do the Field the shield role but also had a pass in him

On this day in 2008 he signed for the first time with the club. What a player and what a great time. I think some of the football that Warnock team played was fantastic. Him and Routledge ripping up the league.

To think that the flappy faced idiot that is Redknapp, the so called great man manager, eventually bombed him out the club

I actually think Chair being injured might be a blessing in disguise. He has had a couple of good games since he has come back and a couple of lovely assists but he is going back to old habits of trying to do too much. With him out we might have to go back to the 3 in midfield. Edwards could actually play the Sam Field role but with better ability on the ball and just sit in front of the back four. Meaning a midfield 3 of Edwards, Varane, Colback/Morgan. Morrison comes in at the back. Of if you want to keep Edwards at the back then a midfield 3 of Colback, Varane and Morgan. Morgan has lost a bit of that energy which he had before he was rested. Understandable though as he is so young. We all know there is a player there though. However, I think in a midfield 2, his role has changed slightly, he has to cover even more ground and if someone gets passed him, they are on to the back four. When he was slightly furthur forward he had that safety net of Varane or Field.

Chair on today's game

Who is to say he isn't? They just either can't seem to follow what is being asked or can only do it to a certain level. The whole essence of buying and selling players. You replace with better who are not only better footballers but also are able to execute a game plan better.

Chair on today's game
at 08:22 9 Mar 2025

The other week people were saying he was getting back to his best when he was being creative and playing through the middle. Too many of us including myself at times are far too reactionary from a single game. When the team or a player is going well we are Peps Barcelona side and a player should be in for the Ballon D'or. When things aren't going quite right we are Southampton in the Premier League this season and players should get out of our club. At the moment we are a mid table championship club. We have some good players and some who are not in great form. Sadly we have not had a striker to regularly put the ball in the net and use as a real focus point to develop our attacks. Sometimes we will play well and you can see what our style of play will be and despite not playing at our full potential knock 4 past a team and other times it doesn't work and we have 1 shot on target in 90 minutes against 10 men. It's going to happen

Bet there are some on this thread you just couldn't wait for us to lose so their anti Marti agenda could flow. Sitting, waiting as the clock is ticking down, salavating as they draft there agenda filled rubbish. Yes it wasn't great today, but a lot of the ideal 11 were not availble. Yes we should have created more, we didn't but once again we get stuff about recruitment etc and how we are all daft not to think that Marti is the anti christ 🥱

Just don't watch anymore. It's probably best. If you can't celebrate in victory however the result comes, especially after that sickener early in the week, then there is no hope

Out of contract (again)
at 09:12 6 Feb 2025

Paal is frustrating. Sometimes he will do a great piece of play to get by someone and then mucks up the five yard pass. When he first came in he looked great. I remember people saying how good he was in the air etc. These days I often think he is out of position and as an attack threat could do more and have better delivery.

It might be one of those situations though, that once he is gone, we realise he wasn't half bad.

I think Andersen is done I'm afraid. Last season some great stuff but now looks like he is running through treacle

Frey I think needs to stay but depends on what wages he is on. If we get a new striker in the summer and the wages Frey is on almost commands that he should start then you might have to let him go, although his effort and eye for a goal is good

Colback and cook I would keep, just for their experience. Cook can still do a job. He is looking a bit rusty since coming back but that's to be expected and Colback always useful coming off the bench. Same with Fox. He will have 3 or 4 good games and then a stinker, which is why he isn't a guaranteed first teamer

Bloody hate this. It's Sky's fault. The moment, Gerrard, Lampard or Rooney get a job in the UK it's Frank Lampards Derby/Coventy. Wayne Rooney's Plymouth. Then they go back just being what they were before when they leave

Is there any way we can actually sign him. Maybe a couple of players out in the summer and use the funds towards it. Him and JCS or even Morrison could be a future pairing. All good on the ball. They said on commentary about him playing in the left as though it might be an issue. He is so good on the ball though and getting his body in the right position, he actually seemed better than on the right

Match Thread: Blackburn tonight
at 22:36 4 Feb 2025

Thought Morgan looked a little off the pace tonight. Not a criticism as I doubt he thought he would be a first team regular already. Maybe a break needed. Field and Varane with Chair in and around. Thought Chair in the middle was a success tonight. Allows him to go either side of the pitch and some great passing from him.
Looking good and a strong solid bench with players still missing JCS and Dembele still to come back

Direction of our squad
at 12:41 4 Feb 2025

Did I also read somewhere, that young players (early 20's) that don't look like there are getting anywhere near the first team are probably going to be let go or sold? Stops us having young players who we constantly send out on loan and don't get anywhere near the first team.

I think with the way we are going we are going to have a very competitive first team squad. I wonder how much longer Steve Cook has on his contract? He is one of the older heads that will help guide the younger players and drive the standards. Saying that I thought Sam Field has done very well when he was captain and I think Marti said in an interview he is a player who see's being a manager one day. I think Sam tactically is very strong in terms of his understand and his almost like Marti's general in midfield. With this influx of younger players it will be interesting to see what our midfield and attack will look like next season. The risk we are taking with Vale and the fact we signed him whilst injured suggests to me, we see him as a first team starter. I think if we play 4-2-3-1 a three of him, Chair and Dembele would be pretty interesting, plenty of rotation. I think if we play 4-3-3 he could quite easily play in the advanced midfield role. Just harsh on Kieran Morgan, but what a player to bring off the bench. Or maybe Marti sees him in Sam Fields role and developing play for a slightly deeper position.

Nice problems to have though. Starting to show some continuity, and long term thinking in our recruitment.
I know the new Brazilian left back is going into the development squad to start, but they way it was worded, if felt more like to get him up to speed with English football etc.

I actually now wouldn't mind us finding a way to sign Edwards if at all possible. I did think if Dunne went, the money might be used to do that. Steve Cook doesn't have much longer to go and I do worry about JCS, and if he can't get fit regularly again does the club look to move him on. Edwards and Morrison at the back, would work I think

Direction of our squad
at 10:05 4 Feb 2025

I think the approach of getting younger players in is a good one and hopefully will help us to go back to the model that we were for years. By a player at a cheap price, develop and then sell at a profit.

With players to come back from injury and the recent signings, I am starting to wonder what our first team and squad will look like next season. With Vale coming in we now have quite a few players in the attacking positions off the striker. We also have Dembele to come back. We are hopefully going to have a young, attacking forward line next year but I do wonder what Marti is building and who he potentially see's as surplus to requirements going forward. I do think in the summer, Andersen will go. Sadly he is well off the pace this year. I think Madsen might be gone to.

We have a nice dilemma in the fact that Morgan has come in and done well, probably ahead of schedule. I wonder if they see him as the deep lying midfield player next to Varane, who can pick a pass. Personally, despite his limitations, Field starts every game for me when fit. You can see he is slowly developing his attacking play.

A attacking trio of Chair, Dembele and Smyth/Vale looks good.

What is most important though and despite his faults, Nourry has decided on a playing and recruitment model that we will use in the long term. They are trying to recruit players, to play a particular style of football, one which Marti wants but at the same time you feel as though if Marti went, we finally would have the situation where we would recruit the manager based on the type of players we have and the type of football team we want to be

There was some doubt last night that this was going to happen. Apparently, he put on his social media that he was in London and then later on deleted a post saying farewell to his previous club. Some people thought maybe it had fallen through. I thought though, you would travel from that far away without everything agreed and just go through the formalities. I don't know, no one knows lol
