According to the BBC website….

“Although they’ve won one of their last seven league games (D4 L2), Colchester have had the most shots on target in League Two this season (47)”.

New Parking procedure at JCS
at 04:12 31 May 2024

The new ANPR system is perhaps inevitable, given the opening of the Northern Gateway. If not, people using the various restaurants will use the football club parking rather than the designated leisure park parking.

On First XI match days, all car visitors will pre-pay as normal.

On non-First XI match days, visitors to an event at the stadium must register their cars on the touch screens in Reception for free parking, else they pay. Fair enough.

What is unclear is how it will work for CUSA members that meet at the Stadium and travel to away games by CUSA bus. We typically arrive and park our cars before Reception is open and often depart after midnight when it is shut.

How do we gain exemption, or is the club going to financially penalise its most loyal followers? A solution is necessary, else the club will score a massive ‘own goal’.

Anybody else watching the live stream? It’s now the HT break.

In the first half, I was impressed with the Cowley’s strategy planning. More like an MBA graduates’s business plan than regular perceptions of football. However, simply presented and most players and U’s staff should grasp its sound principles.

Sombreros - Steve Cotterill
at 21:15 1 Feb 2024

Just remembered……

It was FGRs new manager Steve Cotterill, then at Burnley, that once claimed Colchester Utd should leave Turf Moor wearing sombreros after (bandit like) stealing a win. On his next visit to Layer Road, numerous U’s fans wore sombreros.

I wonder if we might see a few on Saturday or am I the only fan old enough to remember?

U19 Cricket World Cup 2024 - South Africa
at 07:43 21 Jan 2024

Yesterday, England U19 beat Scotland U19. Scorecard on the BBC website.

1. Colchester & East Essex’s Charlie Allison featured for England.

2. Colchester & East Essex’s Mackenzie Jones featured for Scotland.

3. Also in the England side were Noah Thain and Luc Blenkenstein, also from Essex CCC.

Four Essex representatives illustrates the depth of the Essex CCC Academy, and two from C& EE demonstrates the quality of local coaching and youth at Castle Park. Essex CCC has a wonderful group of youngsters.

Charlie has signed a Essex contract for 2024, and joins his brother, Ben, an already established Essex First team player and former England U19. The third Allison brother, Oliver, is a top quality golfer, but has also represented Essex at cricket U19.

Sky TV is showing highlights, but a free live stream can be found over the Internet (various TV channels).

Please note (just been advised)…

It is an all-ticket game - no tickets will be available on the day.
There are no collections on the day - all tickets will need to be posted or collected from the (Col U) Ticket office prior to the matchday.
There are no alcohol sales to away supporters.

So it’s Hollywood with Prohibition and 20MPH speed limits.

Mathews is timed out - Bangladesh set a new low.
at 11:03 6 Nov 2023

I reckon, to date, I have played or scored over 4,500 days of cricket at levels from recreational to International First Class and that probably embraces witnessing the fall of over 37,000 wickets and until today, I have never seen a batsman “timed out”.

What happened today is without precedence in International cricket, and is not (IMHO) in the Spirit of Cricket, albeit correct under Law 40.1.1

To clarify, MCC Laws say the batter must be ready to receive his first ball within three minutes, but ICC World Cup Playing Conditions reduce that to two minutes. Angelo Mathews was on the field of play, but as he put on his helmet the strap broke. A delay occurred whereby the helmet was replaced, Bangladesh appealed and the batter was given out.

Similarly, for forty years, I never witnessed a Mankad dismissal whereby a bowler runs out a non- striking batsman backing up. Instead, a polite warning would be given, but ever since Jos Buttler was run out by Ravi Ashwin, this has become more common in the recreational game, especially in junior cricket. Today, millions of youngsters witnessed the routine legitimisation of Rule 40.1.1 and I am sure we will witness many tearful moments as kids struggling to swap over limited supplies of protective kit are similarly timed out.

Given time penalties for slow over rates and fielding delays, there may be some justification, but today, I felt the Spirit of Cricket finally died. So sad.

Every time you navigate to a new page on the U’s website you are presented with an annoying Bristol Street Motors advertisement that you must cancel. I’ve obviously seen intrusive advertising before, but never seen anything as annoying as this. Hope they get the message that this is the least likely way to encourage fans to use their services.

Free kick laws
at 21:48 26 Oct 2023

A quiz question on the Chase today enquired, if a defender takes a direct free kick, passes it back to his goalkeeper who misses it and it goes into his own net is the outcome;
A) Goal B) Goal Kick C) Corner. The answer might surprise you!

Curious, I looked this up and found this Q & A’s for referees. Maybe in future I will be less critical of seemingly bizarre decisions made by referees!

1). After a direct free kick is taken and the ball is already in play, one of the attacking players (Team A) encroaches within 1 m from a ‘wall’ formed by four defending players (Team B). A goal is scored by Team A directly from the free kick. What is the correct decision?

Where three or more defending team players form a ‘wall’, all attacking team players must be at least 1 m from the ‘wall’ until the ball is in play. It is not an offence if an attacking player encroaches after the ball has been kicked and clearly moved, so the goal is awarded.

2). A defender takes a direct free kick and passes the ball back to a goalkeeper. The goalkeeper fails to kick the ball and does not touch it. After that, the ball enters the goal. What is the correct decision?

If a free kick is kicked directly into the team's own goal, the referee awards a corner kick to the opposing team.

3). A player takes an indirect free kick. The ball enters the opponents’ goal without touching any other player. What is the correct decision?

A goal kick is awarded to the defending team because a goal cannot be scored directly from an indirect free kick i.e. without the ball touching another player (of either team).

4). When a free kick is taken, a defending player lies or kneels on the ground behind a wall formed by other defending team players. What is the correct decision?

The referee allows play to continue as no offence is committed.

5). An attacker (Team A) kicks the ball when it is between Team B goalkeeper’s hand and the ground (inside Team B’s goal area). What is the correct decision?

The goalkeeper is considered to be in control of the ball so cannot be challenged. The referee awards a direct free kick to Team B to be taken from anywhere in the goal area. Any disciplinary sanction will depend whether the challenge was careless (no sanction/warning), reckless (caution/yellow card) or using excessive force (sending-off/red card).

6). The referee stops play and cautions a player who committed a reckless challenge. The offending player shows dissent from this decision. What action does the referee take?

The player receives a second caution (yellow card) and is sent off (red card). Play restarts with a direct free kick to the opposing team from the place where the reckless challenge was committed (dissent occurred when the ball was not in play and does not change the restart).

7). A player takes a free kick. After the ball is in play, the player kicks the ball again before it has touched another player. What is the correct decision?

An indirect free kick is awarded to the opposing team.

8). A free kick is taken quickly by a defending team player inside their penalty area. An opponent who deliberately remained in the penalty area intercepts the ball once it is in play and scores a goal. What is the correct decision?

The goal is disallowed and the free kick is retaken. Players who deliberately remain inside or enter the penalty area before the kick is taken should not gain an unfair advantage, even if the kick is taken quickly.

9). While a free kick is taken by Team A, an opponent (Team B) is closer to the ball than the required distance. A player (Team A) deliberately kicks the ball at an opponent to play the ball again. What is the correct decision?

The referee allows play to continue - it is not an offence unless the ball was kicked in a careless or reckless manner or using excessive force, in which event a direct free kick is awarded to Team B and Team A player sanctioned accordingly.

10). The referee awards a free kick but an opponent prevents the free kick being taken quickly. What is the referee’s decision?

The offending player must be cautioned (yellow card) for delaying the restart of play.

11). Under pressure from an attacking team player, a defender deliberately kicks the ball to the goalkeeper. However, because the ball will go into the goal, the goalkeeper handles the ball inside the goal area to prevent a goal. What is the referee’s decision?

An indirect free kick is awarded to the attacking team which is taken from the nearest point on the goal area line which runs parallel to the goal line. There is no disciplinary sanction for the goalkeeper.

12). A player took a free kick quickly, which was intercepted by an opponent who was less than 9.15 m (the required distance) away. What is the referee’s decision?

The referee will allow play to continue as the player took a risk (to gain an advantage) by taking the free kick when an opponent was still within 9.15 m.

12. A player kicks an indirect free kick towards the opponents’ goal. The ball is touched by the goalkeeper before entering the goal. What is the referee's decision?

A goal is awarded.

12). An attacking player is fouled outside the penalty area but falls into the penalty area. How is play restarted?

Offences are penalised at the point on the field where the offence occurred so a foul outside the penalty area is a free kick offence even if the player falls into the penalty area.

13. When a direct free kick is taken, one of the attacking players (Team A) is less than 1 m from a ‘wall’ formed by four defending players (Team B). A goal is scored by Team A directly from the free kick. What is the referee’s decision?

Where three or more defending team players form a ‘wall’, all attacking team players must not encroach within 1 m from the ‘wall’ until the ball is in play. The referee will award an indirect free kick for the defending Team B from the place where the offender (Team A) was standing.

Castle Park Showdown….
at 20:40 31 Aug 2023

Railway strike frustration means that many U’s fans 2023 won’t travel to the Bescot on Saturday. So, if looking for a FREE sporting alternative, League Champions, Hornchurch CC are the visitors to Castle Park in a first versus (joint) second place end of season 50 limited over finale.

The Bar is open all afternoon and includes an offer of (up to) 10 ciders discounted to merely £2 a pint as the club seeks to clear this surplus stock remaining from its unfortunately soggy cricket & beer festival. Real ales (fresh!) are also available at competitive prices.

Free admission, sunshine, cricket, beer and cider. What’s not to like?

Great news for Colchester cricket fans…
at 22:24 24 Aug 2023

Whilst Adi Ashok remains absent with New Zealand, Essex CCC Metro Bank Cup hero Charlie Allison and Essex and Scotland U19 Mackenzie Jones return to the CEECC First XI on Saturday at Castle Park where Hadleigh & Thundersley CC are the visitors. Match start 11:30, 50 limited overs, free admission, bar open all afternoon.

So if you are not travelling to Gillingham, are at a loose end and fancy watching these exciting young prospects, you are most welcome. CEECC remain in joint second place with Brentwood CC in the Essex Premier League .

The final league game (first Saturday in September) will again be at Castle Park against 2023 league champions, Hornchurch CC. Adi was not selected for the England tour (only UAE tour), albeit he will be back in the country. It would be great to have him, Charlie and Mac back to take the shine off their celebrations!

RIP Sir Michael Parkinson

Cricket, and indeed UK sport generally, has today lost an outstanding ambassador, and the ultimate broadcaster and celebrity interviewer.

I was privileged to meet Michael on a few occasions through the Lord's Taverner's and other charitable activity to which he generously gave his time and support. He loved Barnsley FC and Yorkshire CCC. A proper supporter and passionate enthusiast for achievement in any field, be that sport, the arts or other.

I was touched by his final words exchanged with celebrated umpire Dickie Bird, which I share below....

CEECC’S Adi Ashok gets full Blackcaps call-up!

Colchester and East Essex CC has a proud record of producing internationals, such as Neil Foster, Reece Topley and Ben Foakes, and now Adi Ashok has been called up by the full New Zealand T20 squad for its tour of UAE stepping up from the A squad.

Colchester and East Essex return to second!
at 06:38 17 Jul 2023

A brilliant hundred and six wickets for Kiwi Adi Ashok ensured a crushing victory over Loughton CC at the weekend. Essex and recently Glamorgan Second XI batter, Joe MacGregor plundered yet another fifty, and eighteen year old Essex II’s batter Charlie Allison, smashed 33 after his midweek hundred for the County. Nothing remarkable about Charlie’s total, but it included five enormous sixes to take CEECC to a massive 320 for five declared. Loughton fell 166 short. With Chelmsford CC taking only 20 points and Brentwood losing, with 25 points from a win batting first, CEECC leapfrog back into second place in the Hamro Foundation Essex Premier League, whilst closing the gap on league leaders, Hornchurch CC that could only manage a draw. Now the competition is really hotting up, with CEECC well placed before we return to the 50 over format where they excel. We usually struggle in the longer (120 over, declaration) form of the game, but not this season.

This is (IMHO) THE best Colchester XI I have witnessed at Castle Park in two decades, and that includes watching England’s Reece Topley and New Zealand’s Tom Blundell. I predict Adi Ashok and Charlie Allison both have full international honours ahead, Ashok having already represented his country at U19 and A level. Charlie is just sensational in white/pink ball cricket and is yet to leave school.

The First XI return to Castle Park this coming Saturday to face third placed Chelmsford CC. Free admission, bar open all afternoon, what is not to like before and after the footy?

Then don’t forget, 3rd to 6th August, the Colchester Cricket and Beer Festival. I have just seen the beer and cider list and over 90% are real ales that I have not previously tasted, which is the real deal when it comes to beer tasting events. Add craft ales from Two Brews and the First XI against currently third placed Brentwood CC, the “Silver Ashes”, and sensational covers band Cushti on the Saturday evening after the U’s beat Swindon at home. It’s going to be a blast!

Wounded Colchester return to Castle Park
at 06:33 3 Jul 2023

A heavy defeat at table topping run away leaders Hornchuch CC has inevitably dented hopes of title glory, but the exceptionally youthful Colchester & East Essex CC First XI remain upbeat as they return to Castle Park this weekend (Saturday 08/07) to host Hutton CC.

It is the half-way point of the season, so plenty to play for. However, the fixture clashes with the U’s First pre-season fixture. Suggestion…..

Play at Castle Park starts at 11.00 and is scheduled to end at 19.10, but is usually later due to over rate allowances. The bar is open throughout. So why not do both, catching the first and last cricket sessions with your footie fix in between? Admission is free, and parking available.

Today, until Thursday, Castle Park welcomes Essex Second XI in a county championship fixture against Hampshire. After yesterday’s T20 glory, both counties will be cock a hoop and have named a strong squad full of red ball first team experience. The last such fixture established a number of batting records and once again, award winning groundsman, Jez Sadler, has produced a belter of a pitch. The Essex players love to come to the ‘Park, and it is a shame that the economics don’t favour a return of the First XI Festival, but that conversation continues. Admission is free, and the bar open.

Star CEECC Cricket Club All -Rounder called up to represent New Zealand A
at 23:02 24 Jun 2023

Saturday 24/06

Colchester and East Essex CC cruised to a comfortable victory over Hadleigh & Thundersley in the Hamro Foundation Essex Premier League. The Colchester Man of the Match was Kiwi leg spinner, Adi Ashok, who took 4/42 in 19.4 overs and then smashed 64 in merely 38 balls with the bat. Sadly, C & EE will be without his services for the last three matches of the season as he has been called up to play for the New Zealand A XI against Australia A. Ashok was well supported by swing bowler Vikas Argawal (3-32), then Guy Haines (46 not out) and Simon Fernandes (34 not out).

C & EE remain in second place as current league leaders Hornchurch CC also won, but that sets up a tasty fixture next week when the two clubs clash at Hornchurch Park. The next First XI home game opportunity to see and meet Adi Ashok is at Castle Park on Saturday 8th July, when the visitors are Hutton CC. Start, 11.00, free admission, bar open all afternoon.

Hadleigh & Thundersley 170 all out (57.4 overs). 5 points
Adam Soilleux 39
Cameron Shekleton 38
Adi Ashok 4/42
Vikas Agaway 3/32.
Colchester & East Essex 173-3 (26.4 overs). 20 points.
Adi Ashok 64
Guy Haines 46 not out
Simon Fernandes 34 not out.
Adam Dobson 2/48
