Very sad news. A fella who has gone beyond the call of duty with his contribution to the club, plus a great character to boot. No airs and graces and told it straight. He will be missed.
For instance let’s say a Day type character was revealed tomorrow what could we do to oust him... because let’s face it that’s what bury fans are claiming... what could we do?
The bottom line for all these bury fans, good guys or not is this debacle happened on their watch. Claim you couldn’t do anything, fine! But they are in massive danger of not being able to pass the club on to future generations because of their ignorance and short sightedness. On your watch!
I think many of them will feel that guilt. They could have done something. Protest, question ideas, spending and decisions, write letters to Conn and bury times. But no...blinded by an arrogance that they are better than what they are. On their watch.
Am I sorry for them? Maybe, certainly for some... But this might give certain fans a kick up the arse, that you don’t know how good you’ve got it until you’ve lost it...
...On your watch.
Makes aiming for 20th in league one a humble target.
So now the club is teetering on the edge, they finally are taking to ‘arms’ with bedsheets and twitter pleas. Where was this six years ago when the first crook rolled (literally) in? Nah big Stewie was the saviour, signing championship players, or average players on championship wages, securing premiership training facilities, promising the world with ten bob and a whippet. Parking spot schemes, BL9 weekenders, monthly forums... one held in Tenerife, a three year championship plan Enjoy the ride was the cry, we can’t do anything about it... Well you are now. Shame they didn’t listen and question more then.
A little bit like Stockport but over a greater period of time, and I fear with greater consequences. At least after Stockport’s over spending they had a club to support, bury are in far greater danger. This thread is testimony to the length of mismanagement and ignorance. I always wonder if this scenario would happen or develop at our club, how would we as supporters react? Would we blindly except Beckford, Bunn and Dawson type signings with the ease that bury fans on the whole have? Probably. But for me it’s the other circuses attached. BL9 weekenders, Carrington, car parks... I’m sure others can be added... are the red lights to a chairman who is at best deluded at worst a mad man. This new fella is peeing in the wind and all this crowd funding and solidarity is far too late, where was it all when some fans were saying ‘we can’t afford all this?’... being shouted down and told that Day knows what he’s doing. Contrary to the fact that they were a club similar size to us and grossly overspending, funded by daft money raisers that were flawed before they started. And that’s where we differ, I don’t think we’d blindly except crazy stuff like that. (Frig me we went mental and rightly so when we tried to have the end of season do at the town hall).Bury fans, on the whole did. That’s why there’s little sympathy not just here but across the board.
The next few months will be interesting and scary in equal amounts... one things for sure this thread will get longer. Plus they’ll be a few more links to this thread on their board to it.
Agreed on the 'cheating'. It must be galling to be anyone in League Two and to a certain extent the teams that were vying with Bolton on their re-rise to the Championship, when they see the debts run up over the last few years of flagrant mismanagement. I think what makes its so annoying is that it was/is so obvious from outside. Throw in the usual 'what can we do?' which comes from many fans, when if they listened to the doubting Thomas's they might have been a little more wary of these so called saviours, whilst they enjoy the fruits of cheating the system and its hard to feel sympathy. Personally I do for some of the fans as they ultimately pay the price for a club being run into the ground, but the lack of questioning by the fan base as a whole (and yes this is leveled at our friends down the road), makes me think that a jolt like what looks like is going to happen to both of these clubs might just shake a few empty heads. We have been lucky it seems up to now, and Tommy Cannon aside our custodians of the club have been good eggs.
There, but for the grace of God, go I ...and all that.
Day and Dale might be Mitty type characters living some kind of weird Championship manager type dream, certainly Day might have been.
Some say there is a connection between the two, Glen Thomas being the link, and he's hardly whiter than white, this thread on Shrewsbury's forum confirms a lot of what we suspected/thought.
Throw in the fact that their community protection thing has expired, one could presume that gigg could be perloined, where previously it couldn't. But I'm not devious to know how to do that, I wonder if Day, Dale or both know what they are doing to get it on the cheap.
As always, everyone knows something but not everything.
