Great report, which described the game perfectly.

In terms of Frey, think the rating was fair. The guy was a monster and everything I want my number 9 to be but I felt he went a bit quiet from about 25 mins to halftime - he suffered along with the rest of the team - and felt his pass to Dembele (after he'd done some good build up work) was behind him and meant he had to check back and the chance was missed. Absolutely minor and trivial stuff and probably the best individual performance so far by one of ours, but for me puts you into the 8s rather than 9s/10s category.

To get a 9 you need to be on it for pretty much the whole 90 and not put a foot wrong so Frey would just miss out on that.

Ok, I could make it clearer and specifically say that once you’ve had some time to adapt, you’re more familiar with your surroundings, and started to bed-in you can’t hide in the Championship, you need to want the ball and be prepared for things to go wrong but have the courage to go again etc.

Having a decent touch, playing 1 or 2 nice passes is great, but over 90 minutes in this league, you need to do a lot more and not hide, something I felt he did a bit on Friday but as I said, no complaints, it’s a massive change for him, everything is new, he needs time to adapt and to be cut some slack…BUT in the future, if he delivered what he did, I personally don’t think it’s good enough, which was my point because a few people have mentioned to me they do think it was good enough, flagging the goal.

In answer to the other posters question, I thought he struggled to make himself available to receive the ball so couldn't really have any influence on the game. He seemed a bit static and didn't do enough to show for the ball.

Agree with all the comments about him needing time and totally unfair to give him stick at this stage of his Rangers career. However, I’m worried that some people seem to think he played quite well against Luton. I thought he was way off it, and looked slightly overawed by the occasion which isn’t totally a surprise given fairly intimidating ground to play at for your first live Friday night game. Credit to him for sticking with it and getting the goal which he did take very well, and that will only be a good thing for his confidence, but if that was Anderson, Field or Colback that produced a fairly anonymous performance like that, they’d rightly be getting criticised.

You can’t hide in the Championship, you have to want the ball and be prepared to make mistakes. He has ability, he just needs to believe in himself and get himself up for the battle. I do think our Team potentially misses a player like him, but we can't afford to carry players, so here's hoping he kicks-on.

Acca payout, stories of success
at 09:45 2 Sep 2024

Not had a bet for a while but remember my biggest win was around £350 and was a total fluke. Did my then usual of £20 on 3 or 4 home wins (think we may have formed part of the bet) and couldn’t understand why the odds were so good and if I won, I’d be getting so much, then realised I’d done BTTS and win by mistake. Luckily, it was fate and got my biggest ever win which I’ve never come close to repeating.

Agree with this.

Looking at his performance in isolation, it was poor. Taking into account everything else (new to league, step up in level, only 2nd game, experience etc), he needs to be cut a lot of slack. I don’t think people are being that harsh with him.

Yeah how I’ve seen it. Madsen needs to do a lot more and sort his feet out. Lloyd, showing a lack of quality on the ball. Thought Frey looked bright early on but faded a bit now. Poor goal to giveaway

"Kakay's fine when he plays in a back 3..." I beg to differ.

"Should have kept Barbet" conveniently forgetting he was only really good for us in a back 3 and pretty poor when played in a 4.

Found his performance reassuring.

He looked like he had some potential, a bit stronger than I remember, awareness of play going on around him also seemed better. Clearly he will need a bit of time to get up to speed. I liked Dave Mc's view on what a good season would be for him - if he can get around 8-10 goals that would suggest he has some ability, but will also mean he's likely to have gone through some tough spells as well and will show his character. We need to back him and support him and certainly not be writing him off this early in his Rangers career.

Don't remember much of that but have to say some decent goals in there in terms of movement and finishing. Not how I remember his time with us though.

Is Madsen the man to solve QPR's long term CM issue? Signing
at 22:45 23 Aug 2024

Good read. I agree strongly with a lot of the commentary. As you noted, for all his qualities, Field is a bit too risk averse at times with his passing - favouring a simple back pass which often invites the press, rather than a more creative option.

No idea what this guy is like but a passer that can get the ball to the new, attacking talents we have, could make us a very dynamic team. Time will tell.

Transfer rumours 2024

Agree with it being a risky strategy. I would say though that the profile of player we're buying (or hopefully buying as part of these initial loan agreements), does at least support this strategy a bit more than the type of players we've purchased in previous seasons. I guess if you sign 7-10 players all at good ages, all smashing the data side of things out the park, you have a much better chance of striking gold.

Nothing wrong with being cautious, but I don't feel the sums being spent are ridiculous, and arguably we are accruing some very good investments, particularly in the case of Dembele where you can already see the potential profit when we come to sell him. Obviously lots of risks, injuries and things which can derail plans but I was more concerned the Beale summer where we didn't have any incoming funds and wasted money on loans where we had no sell-on options or spent on older players (Balogun). Early days but improved TV money, Armstrong and Eze England cap income, and releasing Willock and the goalkeeper's wages does feel like it's more balanced but.....if it was me, I would still sell one of the assets - JCS or chair - to really highlight how the business model should work.

QPR lucky to escape intact from Cambridge chasing – Report
at 11:28 15 Aug 2024

Good report, thanks for the write-up. Sadly couldn't see this one so no idea on performance but doesn't sound good.

I do worry, and think Dave Mc made some good points on this for West London sport, that we've not been as balanced as we should be in our transfer dealings. Some exciting/interesting transfers for sure but zero championship experience, and for most of them zero experience of English football. No problems with 2, possibly 3 signings in this mould, but when your entire summer recruitment is this type of player, it is a massive risk. Building team spirit, developing an identity etc must be so much harder when you're going down this road of transfers. Someone like Hayden for example added so much in terms of experience and professionalism. Yes, others may have more sell on value/potential, but you do still need the Hayden types in your team. As a club, I just worry we never get the balance right - a bit of championship experience and professionalism, mixed in with a couple of unknown excitiing talents.

However, I would say if we can survive this season, so these newbies will have had a full season getting acclimatised to the league, and if we can finish the season well, I can see a lot of positives for next season. It's just this year which is the real worry for me. I hope I'm wrong and they all step-up and deliver.

Both seem like quite exciting signings but they've not played Championship football before, nor have the other summer recruits. We need to give them time. Like so many players, you get through a season of championship football, the next season you can look a totally different player. A decent loan for Kolli and a year's experience for the others, next season with Eze probably going (if not sooner) and Chair (also if not sooner), I think we'll be well set to build a strong squad. This is a big season for us though to make sure we build some momentum for a possibly top 6 fight next season.

RiP Graham Thorpe

I think his first wife left him because he had a one night stand while on tour - she went off with her personal trainer if I remember correctly and he had a lot of struggles over his kids from that marriage.

But Thorpe was a top player, during a poor 90s England team, he stood up and fought hard for his country. Very sad news and if he didn’t have such difficult personal issues, I think he’d achieved more in the game. Not often you can play spin and pace to such a high level. In the 30 odd years I’ve followed England, Thorpe would still make the middle order if I was picking my best 11.

That would be me. Stone overweight is harsh, and looking at the training photos I can’t see any excess timber on the bloke but one of the first things I said to my Spurs mate after commenting on the pitch looking decent and good crowd was “Dunne looks like he’s carrying a fair bit”. Thought he played ok. Maybe it was the kit or the new hairdo that did it but genuine surprise from me when seeing him, and Jimmy D is a player I like.

He looked like he’d enjoyed his time off to me. Needs to shed some pounds like Frey has managed.

Thought Dunne looked a stone (at least) overweight. Agree with EDB, thought he was poor with the ball. Smyth was decent first half as was Kohli and although he didn’t do much Frey looks a lot fitter and think he could bring something to the team this season. Who was the left footed centre mid that came on? He looked decent.

Agree with this and the view that it's a shame he's going. The club mismanaged him in my opinion, he should have had a decent loan somewhere by now. He's strong and quick and will only improve. But, I get it that we should deal if he won't sign. Shame.
