At HT, I asked a Swansea employee (that I've met in previous years), how was the Welsh National Anthem. He sheepishly in a typical British manner confessed, "I can't sing either". Ouch! |

What makes you think that LD knows crap about assessing talent? Because he was a very good American player (arguably the best), played on loan for Everton, couldn't cut it at BL, and was very successful with MLS? HUH? He has vast less experience than Bob Bradley and you want to trust him with selecting players that can add to Swansea FC? Really?!
Has he set up the process for scouting acquisition? The aggregation of various reports, etc. Has he negotiated contracts? What is his experience with agents? There is much more to DoF than signing a player....

NYCFC and NYRB are going to be on the road this week-end. Here is the reasoning. #1 NYRB and #2 NYCFC had first round byes because they finished #1 and #2 in the Eastern conference. In the Eastern conference, #3 Toronto is hosting #6 Philly; #4 DC is hosting #5 Montreal.
Here is where it gets complicated. Because NYRB finished #1, they get the lower seed winner which could #6 philly (if they win) or the winner of DC/Montreal. NYRB will be traveling on the first leg of a home and home. NYCFC will also travel to the other winner in a home and home.

First, thanks to the Trust leadership for their tireless efforts to protect the long-term benefit of the club. As a volunteer, you're really earning your money! Thank you.
Second, while it may feel good to go after the sell-outs, it may not be in the best interest of the trust given the trust's limited financial resources compared to the sell-out's being flush with cash from the sale. If it's a matter of criminal proceedings and not civil litigation which would require the Trust to personally contest the matter, then the action may be less risky. I would not want the Trust to squander their resources when the next opponent may be the new owners not the old ones.
Third, I don't have the same animosity toward the sell-outs, as many of you do; I think that I have not experienced what you guys went through with Petty, etc. My perspective is that these guys came in and saved the team from Petty and dissolution and gambled their own money to save the club. I don't begrudge them from profiting from their investment. Now, they could have found a buyer who was more cooperative; I find it hard to believe that anyone could realistically be expected to give away $4M - that's a lot of money. It's a business. Of course, I expect many of my Welsh friends won't agree with me.
Fourth, I thought that the 25% wouldn't provide much more protection for the Trust. Has this changed?
Fifth, is it possible that Morgan might be inclined to sell 4% to the Trust? If so, perhaps the Trust focus should be on fund raising for a potential sale. Can the trust borrow money for a potential purchase against their existing shares?
Sixth, from my perspective (perhaps I'm incorrect), the Trust has little cash on hand (from a war chest perspective), but does have significant people which could hold political power with the Swansea council and other representatives to influence the new owners.
Thanks again to the Trust leadership and to all the members of the trust (I'm proud to be a 2 year member). Buckle up, this isn't going to be an easy ride. |

I'm not going to read this thread - 1st page was sufficient. I won't get into a xenophobic discussion - regardless of which side of the Atlantic.
New American fans who come on here - ignore the turds, they proliferate in every forum. If you really start liking Swansea, come to a match here, the actual fans in real life are friendly and fun. The Welsh are some of the best people to have a pint and talk soccer. Also, don't be surprised if many of the Welsh don't like soccer - but prefer rugby (big surprise to me).
Please accept that many of the Swans fans are mourning the loss of their coach who saved the Swans from relegation last year, but the team started slow and the front office (HJ) sold 2 players (Ayew and Williams) and didn't really replace them.
The American owners purchased the team in a scandalous manner without involving the Trust (21% owner of the team), in my opinion. If you want to become a Swansea fan, find Jack to a King to get some prospective of the Swansea story (even if some consider it propaganda from some former owners). Some Welsh consider themselves as part of their team that they support even more than owners and for some of the owners selling to the American was an act of treachery if not treason to the club. Personally, I sometimes don't understand some opinion from a soccer business perspectives.

Agreed. It's very confusing and quite alien to European football.
The impetus for this setup was to prevent the same dissolution in USA soccer league (the old NASL) in the early 1980's. MLS is just 20 years old and early in its infancy almost folded with just 10 teams that were owned by just a few "investor-operators (IO)" (MLS-speak for owners).
Primarily, the cap controls costs for a single-entity league so clubs don't compete financially against each other driving up player costs to the detriment for the entire league. Now, there is some differences between some MLS teams in roster spending.
The draft is more like American football than American baseball. MLS is much more transparent - but with still a way to go - than it was years ago. The primary consideration between keeping IO money and parity which allows each team a chance to win. While the PL is competitive at the top with many teams having a legitimate chance of winning, much more than other top flight European, but the middle to lower level PL teams really have little to no chance of winning the PL. |

MLS owns the contracts of all the players. They would need to approve all transactions.
The assumption that because MLS is lesser quality than PL (agree) that all of the players are of the same lesser quality. To assert that all of the MLS players are not PL quality is an ill-informed opinion.
The only PL quality DCU player is GK Bill Hamid. He started this year late because of knee surgery. He could play in the PL. DCU's best player is a young, tiny attacking midfielder, Acosta, on loan from Boca Juniors. But, he needs to continue to develop before he was ready for the PL.
However, there are other MLS players that could play in the PL, for example Uruguayan AM, Lidero (Seattle) and AM Diego Valeri (Portland) have sufficient quality, but Argentinian Valeri couldn't get a work permit.
Portland's forward Adi (Nigerian) was looked at by PL, but would not have been able to get a permit, either. |

apologies, I didn't explain it well and I was trying to type it while listening into a conference call.
Howard was the GK (started and played every minute). Gaven came on in OT for Lisi. But he came on as the 4th sub (as a GK), so he came on wearing the GK shirt while Howard put on a field jersey. So, at the start of OT, Gaven in goal, Howard at center half. As soon as the ball went out of bounds, Gaven and Howard switched positions and shirts. [Post edited 5 Oct 2016 4:54]

I've known BB since he was the coach at Princeton (a prestigious US university and his alma mater). He's a smart, serious coach. He's been trained by Bruce Arena (current LA coach, former US NT coach) and the most arrogant coach in the USA. While I'm not his biggest fan, Bruce may be the best US coach. Also, Donovan has un-retired and he's playing for LA (with Bruce). more worries.....
One clarification, BB was the coach of Ohio University - this is different than Ohio State University. OU is much smaller than OSU. Analogously, it would be like the population of Fishguard to Swansea, back in the 80's.
Bob's nickname is cheating Bob. I was in the stands when he earned this moniker. At the time, a 4th sub could be used for GK, the rationale was that if a GK was injured and all 3 subs had been used, a real GK could be brought on. So to get a fourth sub, Eddie Gaven was brought on - he was a young winger - as a GK. When the ball went out, real GK Timmy Howard (yes the former Everton GK) switched shirts with Gaven and NY had successfully used 4 subs for field players. |

Donovan was a very talented American player. But, he's a self-centered egotistical, whiny little bitch. What makes him qualified to advise on any soccer discussion regarding the premier league. Sure, he played internationally and in the Premier League (on loan to Everton) and German league (BL). But, he didn't fight for his position - instead returning to the US. He prefers to be a big fish in a small pond. I question his "determination" and his .

I'm definitely going to be at the Richmond match - rugged 2 hour drive. It would seem that the midweek match would be against DCU since they have relatively close matches at Philly (2 hours away) and Columbus (7 hours drive - 1 hour flight) on the Saturdays on either side.
But Fedex and RFK could be expensive. Germantown might be too small (5K). College Park would only be (8-9K) - but the far bleachers get removed in the spring - I don't think they get replaced until later in August. I could be wrong about that.
Loyola MD might be a candidate because of the facility. Ravens stadium could be too expensive.
Tickets are $30/45 at Richmond seem high for a preseason match against 3rd level Richmond - but a lot cheaper than a flight to Swansea or a taxi from NYC! :) |
