Not many know the truth about what happened - but many want to speak about it

I was not happy about Grant playing up to get an advantage. I was even less happy when he continued to wink towards me - apparently thinking this is what I had paid to see. I explained I did not like it and he continued to wink and appeared to encourage some of the other Rochdale fans to take it on themselves to have a go at me.

I was thrown to the floor and taken by yellowcoats away. I was not happy about this (I had not done anything) and forced away. Following assessment for head injury, and a cup of tea, I was taken back into the arena (I asked to be escorted back as I had been attacked earlier).

If people want to claim otherwise so be it.

Well done for coming on here and clarifying the goings on down in the Smoke.

We were all mystified with what the Officials were doing.

You have my absolute respect. If Grant did indeed con the ref then you were absolutely right to have a go. I know many people will say that it is the way that modern football is but I too don't want to be part of a team that cheats.

As I wasn't at the game I currently don't know whether Grant did do this. If he didn't then I guess you're out of order.

I'll up it by pointing out that Steve Whitehall was conning refs most weeks during the 95-96 season. And we all congratulated him for how cleverly (not Tom) he did it.

Any number of those penalties he won by leaving his foot so that a defender or keeper would make contact could have resulted in a sending off, though admittedly I can't remember if any did.

It is n't right to con the ref/officials,I agree.

But EVERY and i mean EVERY team does it......it's the norm.

The criticism of how Bobby Grant went down so easily is quite ironic really.

When I was your age, I used to enjoy the odd game of tennis. Or was it golf?

Interesting point. I hate diving, and dislike players 'making the most' of things. However they are quite different things. Having not seen todays incident I don't know the answer. Could it be compared to Putterill. He made the most of things but I wouldn't call that cheating. I'm taking Ricardo's rant as Grant diving for no reason, or holding his face after a little tap on the shoulder.

Interesting discussion ahead.

I cannot stand cheating of any nature. It annoys me when Dale players do it just as much as when opposition players do it. How can it be 'cheating' when opposition players con the referee by manufacturing a foul or feigning injury or pulling a shirt, but 'clever' when a Dale player does the same thing? Football is a SPORT!

Wasn't there ,haven't seen it but Wombles Manager reckons he deserved to go-possibly on the basis that Midson has done it before and needs to learn a lesson from it.

I wasn't there so can't comment on yesterday's incident but as stated above Whitehall made winning a penalty an art form during the 95/96 season and more recently Will Buckley seem to be getting a penalty every time he ran at the bury defence!

It's an accepted part of the game now I'm afraid where if any contact is made then players have right to go down, just look at Danny Welbeck's penalty at Old Trafford yesterday.

Having seen the penalty incident on tv that led to the grant incident , all I can say is somtimes you get them and sometimes you dont (see welbeck and suarez yesterday). The wimbledon player was certainly already going down expecting contact to be made. As for not wanting to be part of a dale team cheating? As has already been mentioned weve had it for years at dale - whitehall, murray, alf and buckley certainly needed no encouragement to go down in the box.

Its a BRILLIANT goal to cap a BRILLIANT start by Rochdale - Don Goodman 26/08/10

The simple fact is that if you make any contact with the attacking player in the area you chance giving a penalty away, you either time your tackle perfectly or risk the chance of conceding a penalty, not seen the incident from yesterday but can remember giving some shocking decisions against us in the passed so a case of evening them up it sits perfectly fine with me

Fair play to you Ricardo for coming on here to give your side, but the thread header is as accurate as a Sun header!

You WERE NOT attacked, Grant did not wink at you, nor did he encourage other Dale fans to round on you. You took a step towards your assailant and he raised his hand to keep you at arm's length and you went down like a Premiership cheat.

And you were most definitely not "explaining" things to Bobby, you were completely out of control screaming at him in a very high pitched voice. I was standing 3 yards from you and saw everything from start to finish.

The young fans at Stevenage last year who you ranted at, certainly didn't feel you were "explaining" things to them.

And neither did Parkin's Dad at Torquay when he had to repel your "explanations" with his walking stick!

And, remarkably, 22 years ago to the very same day Billy Bremner wanted to "explain" something to you when Dale famously missed the same penalty 3 times in a game v Doncaster. It's a long story!

You really are the most unlucky Dale fan I know!

I was more amused by the title of the post being the truth. The truth is, the "explaining" to Bobby Grant was done in much the same way as Matthew Simmons "explained" to Eric Cantona that is was going to be "an early bath for you Cantona"

Grant winked at the fans not just you. Yes he went down easily but it didn't really matter as the Wimbledon player swung his fist in front of the ref he was always being sent off. You overreacted to a situation which happens week in week out at football. I think you earn the prize for the best dive of the day though

I was stone cold sober!

I presume the comment was aimed at Ricardo!

I had to laugh at the fan in front of me at the turnstiles who'd had so much to drink he got tangled up amongst the bars of the turnstile before being dumped by the revolving device inside the ground. It was a classic Dale moment.

Must be that London which encourages us Daleys to have one too many!

Am I right in recalling that Ricardo was the lone voice sticking up for Sutton at Hartlepool in his last game in charge ( Nov 94 ) ?
