Saints Set To Raid Celtic
Thursday, 4th Jan 2018 11:14

Saints look set to be about to raid Celtic, but who is the surprise target on their radar, read on to find out.

Saints are being linked with Celtic central defender Erik Sviatchenko according to reports North of the border.

Sviatchenko will be familiar to Saints supporters being part of the Midtjylland side that knocked Saints out of the Europa League two seasons ago and the 6ft 1 Dane played in both matches.

The Danish side's form in that competiton led Celtic to sign him in a 4 1/2 year deal in January 2016 and initially he was a big success at Parkhead, however injuries have blighted his time and this has led to him being overtaken in the pecking order.

This season he has not played a League game for Celtic and Brendan Rodgers has told him he has no future at the club, Saints are believed to be taking a look at him as are Copenhagen in his home country, however neither have yet made a formal approach.

Given that he is out of favour at Celtic he would not be expensive and with Saints struggling big time in the Central defensive department he could represent a good punt to cover a few bases both should Saints fail to capture any of their big money targets in this position, or as cover if they do.

Certainly he has the experience neccessary and he is well loved by Celtic's supporters being first choice right up to this season, many of them had hoped that on his return from injury he would be given the chance to recapture his former form, but it seems Brendan Rodgers has other ideas.

We don't need another injury-prone centre-back. We need a quality signing in this position. The last 12 months has shown that we do not win many games with Stephens and Yoshi at the back. Hoedt + someone good and not prone to injuries. I don't know who mind - and of course other clubs will lick their lips and add millions to the price when we come calling.

A strange one. I get the impression that the main factor driving our transfer targets is 'Is our valuation of the player higher than the potential purchase price?' If the answer is 'Yes' then we're willing to buy. Now that sounds like a very sensible strategy if the business of Saints FC were solely about trading players but it's not. The business of Saints FC always has always been, and hopefully always will be, about keeping the local fan base happy. And that means playing good football, picking up points and staying in the Premier League. Our current league position means that a large dose of speculation (on players) is needed to accumulate (points).

Sounds like the Cheap Option from the Bargain Basement. Weve already got plenty of these type players and don't need any more.

Four days into the transfer market and no signings, what is, or what is not, going on
