Wanyama Ready To Snub Saints For Spurs Thursday, 26th May 2016 11:56 According to the latest reports Victor Wanyama has turned down a new 5 year deal at St Mary's in the hope that Tottenham Hotspur come back in for him.
On his day Wanyama was a vital cog in the Saints team, the problem was that too many times last season it wasn't his day as he was sat in the stands either suspended or sulking, this means that although it would be a blow to lose him, it would not be a terminal one given that we have others already at the club to step into the gap and our scouting network will already be looking at other options.
So if as it seems, that the Kenyan is determined to move from Saints then perhaps its about time that we let him do so and rake in the proceeds, as with the departure of Morgan Schneiderlin last year he will fetch a fee of £20 -25 million and that will go a long way to strengthening the squad.
Some will say that we can't keep on losing players every summer and still keep a strong squad, but the reality is that we now have the bulk of the squad signed on long term deals and it is always going to be the case that one or two will see the grass as being greener on the other side of the fence.
Some will say that Saints should show ambition and keep their players, but this is the modern game, when a player enters the last year of his contract you either have to cash in or let him walk for nothing.
But Wanyama is one of the last of the Pochettino era, although the Argentinian's reign at St Mary's was brief he made an impression on certain players and Wanyama leaving will see this now being very much Ronald Koeman's squad with little trace of Pochettino's influence.
We should not worry about that, Koeman has done a far better job at Saints than Pochettino did with arguably better resources in terms of players.
So although it would be nice to see Wanyama show some loyalty and commit his future to Saints and i would be happy to see him do so, if he does not sign a deal in the next few weeks I would say that Saints would be far better moving him on and moving forward as we have always done before.

I feel like selling Wanyama would probably be good for the club. He's a very good player but is not really good enough on the ball to be the sort of anchorman a lot of the top teams use. He was great for defensive security when we were still getting established in the premier league. But now we've started to make the progression to consistently challenging for European places i think it is time to bring in a player that can sit deep and defend, but also create as well. I don't think that any of our current midfielders other than Wanyama can play well enough as the anchorman. Im excited to see someone quality come in to this position.

The bulk of the first team are not on long term deals. Fonte, tadic, long, Bertrand, Mane have two years left and pelle, martinez have one year left. Like Clyne we will probably get about 10Mill for Wanyama as hes entering his last year, lets use that money to get the above lot signed on longer

Based on the messages coming out of the club it wouldn't surprise me at all if VW leaves. I'd like him to stay but, in my opinion, he's replaceable. The key thing is to replace him, though, as there's not enough strength in the centre of midfield without him. The only problem with new CMs is that they can take time to settle into the team, so we'd need to recruit carefully

I don’t think we’ll get £20m for Wanyama. He’s in the last year of his contract and having been sent off three times this season his value has to have gone down. I’m also not convinced that Tottenham will want to sign him, with Dembele and Dier they arguably already have better defensive midfielders than Wanyama. Unless another team comes in for him, the choice will be for Wanyama to either sign a new contract or run his contract down. Both leave Saints in limbo.

I would imagine that if he's turned down a 5 year deal from us, he must be pretty sure that he's going somewhere. It would be naive to think he hasn't had discussions with his agent and maybe Spurs about leaving. And yes Spurs do have good players in those positions but so will any top club club he goes to. He will need to back himself to get in there. Plus if you're Spurs with a lot of games to play next year, Wanyama is really not going to be much of a risk at around ten million.

I'm sorry, but I don't rate him to be in a saints shirt. He's clumsy, his pass rate is poor, and if we get anything over 15 million then great, get in Dennis praet.and away we go, I rate oriel more than wanyama. Shows far more work rate, has a better pass rate amd a better shot on him. Cash in amd get rid. Onwards and upwards we go

Tired of hearing about the greedy Kenyon, no way will he attract big money or a big club can't pass the ball and a liability.

I'm with BUCK and BigRob. If we get a £10m offer, bite their hand off!

I agree with Sanguin. Final year of the contract, Spurs with a new stadium to build and Levy drives a hard deal anyway. If even want him and they are the only team in for him we'll be lucky to get £10 million.

I think that the fee will be more like £15 million, Clyne last year in a similar position fetched £12 million and Wanyama is worth more than Clyne under normal circumstances

He was too much of a 'big game' player anyway - where was he in the scrappy games against lower opposition? Usually AWOL. The game against Liverpool when he and Mane turned the game, it was for me down to Wanyama, when they came on at half time Wanyama literally won every tackle and header and gave Mane the chance to shine. His head was turned ages ago and he only turns up for the big games to put himself further into the shop window.

He was promised a move this summer last summer. Koeman said he might do better than Spuds - the fact that he won't, and may not even be wanted at the potato patch, says a lot about his very 'mixed' season. I still feel Everton or Wet Spam might come in for him. We should set a lower limit of 15m and if we don't get it then make him see out his contract. We are going to have to do that to one of these wantaways one day...

I don't understand all the VW critics or anyone who says that Oriol (or others) we have are better than VW. I accept he is one of those players who looks like the great things he does are accidental rather than intentional and I accept he can look clumsy sometimes. BUT I think he is an excellent and underrated player with better passing, vision and skill than he gets credit for. Combine those qualities with his undisputed strength, power, all round altheticism and experience he should be someone we do everything we can to keep. Unfortunately he does think he is destined for greater things than Saints, but this next move is key for him and I think he would do better for himself for the long term staying at Saints for another 2-3 years, especially if he moves anywhere other than Spurs. If I was him and reading all the comments I think I'd want to leave too. Please stay VW - show the rest what some of us see, you are a great player for Saints and a great player full stop!

Saints are on record as saying that they no longer sell players to clubs they consider as competitors and Spurs fall into the category imo

I hope VW does not read all the 'anti' tripe on this site. No wonder he would want a move. The recently held VW pie chart survey verged on the disgusting. He gets my vote and I would hate it for him to leave especially to join Spurs. Modern footballers go where their ambitions and agents lead them.

Yeah, don't agree at all with the negative comments on VW. He hardly ever gets caught out of position, is pretty much always available for teammates to pass to, rarely loses the ball, and has the skills to get himself out of trouble. I don't know what more you can realistically expect from a DM. So he can't shoot or pick out a 60 yard pass, so what? My view is, if he's desperate to go then sell him quick and don't let it drag out. I like him but trust that we could replace him if we're willing to spend 10-15 mill

I have a feeling that he wont go. He isn't obviously good enough to command the fee that saints want. He is really effective at what he does but is he really a rare tallent? We are better riding it out and taking a loss rather than be seen to be desperate to sell players in the last year of their deal. If i was Spurs they will probably offer us 5-7m plus a surplus player and be happy if we take it or leave it. The only team that i can see that are desperate for a player like Vic is Arsenal and us if we sell him!

However good he is, we don't want another season wondering whether he's committed or not. If he's trying to 'play the field' I'd love to see us go out and buy a quality 'box to box' midfielder irrespective, don't wait till he makes his mind up, get back in charge. If he goes, then I think we've seen enough of Romeu to know that he's good enough to play the 'holding' role. If we wait on VW it's quite likely that we will miss out on our primary targets. Don't let the 'cart lead the horse'.

VW was brought buy southampton in the summer of 2013 for £12.5 million. In that time he has become an integral part of Southampton's centre midfield. His partnership with Morgan Schneiderlin was arguably the best defensive midfield duo the EPL has seen in years. It was one of the main reasons we had such a strong defensive record. The simple reality is VW has develop into a solid DM while at Southampton and has clearly come to the assessment that he wants to progress his career to the next level. As he's in the last year of his contract we are unlikely to get the full market price which I believe is in the region of £25-30 million. Anything above £15 million would be decent. I think VW is definitely replaceable. Whether that's by Romeu or someone else is yet to be seen. I still think the loss of Morgan was more significant. Regardless I don't agree with the VW critics. He has served our club well and should be given more respect. If we're not careful we might not realise what we have until it's gone. The same goes for VW. There's a reason why other clubs want his services. They can see his value. We shouldn't diminish it while we have it. We're his supporters for crying out loud! The real question we should be asking is whether the board have done everything they can to convince VW of the club's ambition and whether he's been offered a competitive package.

Very deceptive player, looks like he's ambling about and hardly ever sprints but he also hardly ever loses the ball. Stay Vic, don't become a Kenyan spud.
