He looks like he is finally starting to believe in himself . A lovely cross for Field today and he terrorised Watford in that second half . Been critical of him a lot but fair play to him because he is becoming integral to how we play . Just hope he doesn’t suffer an over usage injury similar to Cook for example as he leaves everything on that pitch every week |

What a day! Even the weather couldn’t put a dampener on it. Thought it was very good performance by a team looking compact and very difficult to breakdown at home. We frustrated the sh*t out of Watford as we did Preston and Norwich with our work rate, pressing and desire to match them physically . Some nice football too especially down the right in the second although first 2 goals ironically came from the left . Some impressive performances too notably from Ashby (second half especially), Fox, Field , Varane , a much improved Paal. But Dunne and Smyth were tremendous today . A month ago they were driving me made down that right hand side . Today Smyth was electric in his favourite situation , attacking the loft second half . His work rate is becoming integral to who we are now. And I thought Jimmy was a Colossus today. A captains performance for me . Someone compared him to Macca a couple of weeks back which I baulked at, but today that could have been Big Mac himself out there . Inspirational ! |

The strops we are seeing from opposing teams at LR are very much down to how we play and how we are set . We completely frustrated Watford today with our Press and closing down . We gave them very little chance to play as we did Norwich at home and Preston . Huge credit to the players and the coaching staff because we look very hard to play through at home |

Wonderfully written Clive. Thank you for all the words that describe the wonder and the pain of following our bonkers club and team, in the last year and every year . Watching that clip of the Jimmy Dunne goal against Birmingham genuinely bought tears of elation back to my eyes . For multiple reasons I can’t make many away games but to all of you who traipse up and down the country giving the guys incredible support , you are this clubs life’s blood. At times the players don’t deserve you and us who only make it to LR but there is nothing like supporting and loving this football club. Happy new year to everyone on here and let’s hope we can start 2025 with a victory . Come on U R’s!!!!!! |

Also , around the time we got relegated from the premier league in 96 we sang Daydream Believer . Very popular at that time but we just stopped singing it. |

One song that got dusted off when we were smashing Leeds was “hello , hello , we are the Rangers boys”. It’ sounded great but we don’t sing it very often , at home, anyway . |

God , this guy. He even annoyed me as the 4th official at Old Trafford last night . |

Just sat and read through this thread and it’s very interesting with some very good points being made . Would agree with lots on here . I do find it hard to accept that MC is ‘over working ‘ them on the training ground when he seems so dictated to by the stats people behind him on a match day , hence the likes of JCS and Varane not starting yesterday . If his attitude on the training ground was careless as regards to player health then he wouldn’t care on a match day (see Beale). However on the flip side to that , there were rumours that certain players who will rename nameless were moaning to anyone that would listen that they didn’t like training on a Sunday (which was what was happening after every defeat ). The training wasn’t physical and more about recovery and analysis but players were complaining of tiredness. This was before the upturn in form . My initial reaction was “stop losing games then” but maybe it was overkill in that period and it’s one of things that changed along with our form ? Who knows? Won’t dig up the “Ben Williams is no longer at the club” stuff again. Rory Findlay came in in the summer and had a lot of his own ideas. The club insist Williams is in charge ‘publicly’. Who exactly is running what is unclear but from what I hear and it’s only hearsay, nothing factual , Williams is absent and if he is in contact it’s almost irrelevant. Too many games, overworking of players, unbalanced squad, lack of depth in quality, not enough from the dev squad, the build of the modern player (No way Field is heavier than Frey…no way), footwear that acts more like a slipper than boot so offers no support to the ankle or the foot, pathetic and irrelevant shin pads, over watered pitches that make the surface greasy and slippery , boll*cks scheduling by over lords which only caters to their own pocket and power …lots really. Many many reasons why we have the problems we are having and of courses we are not alone . There is then of course the subject of shopping in a particular market where good players are affordable due to their injury history . We have to suck that one up. There just isn’t a simple answer to any of it and not a quick fix but if we are not careful, players like Paul Smyth and Jimmy Dunne will be next on the injury list as there is no restbite for them . We just simply don’t have the cover or players and that’s not all the fault of the recruitment team either. Which leads to the annual ding dong among fans about what team we put out in our yearly 1 game guesting in the FA cup third round . If MC rests players and picks a side with Santos and Aroha in it then 1 half of the fan base will be up in arms about cup runs and worst club record in the FA cup etc etc . If he plays a full strength side then the other half will be up in arms that we need to rest players like Dunne and Smyth to make sure we maintain our Championship status which is still precarious despite the upturn in form . It’s a tough one for sure as you can see both sides. We’ll have to trust MC on that one . And as previously mentioned…WHERE IS COLBACK!?!? |

Sorry just echoed this . That decision in particular summed him up for me . Inconsistent and appearing to have as easy an afternoon as possible . Similar to Blackburn away for me |

Yes agreed . Not a major gripe as we’ve had a lot worse recently , but another example was the challenge by I think Nunez (might be someone else) on Chair, as Ilias turned for goal about 40 yards out in the second half. As far as I’m aware there was no card for a blatant hack at someone about to run at the last man . Seemed to me another premier league ref making decisions that makes his afternoon pass as comfortably as possible . I will caveat that with us getting some iffy decisions at home recently . |

Match day staff have to be in at 7am. Absolutely brutal |

Very much agree with this Brian. Yes second half became a slog and a hard watch but the reasons for that have been pointed out . Would have been easy for the players to feel sorry for themselves after Boxing Day, the injuries etc, but I thought they showed a lot of character to play how they did 1st half and dig in the way they did in the second. A little word on the ref. Nothing major but seemed eager to punish us for things he was letting Norwich players get away with. Related to that, I think Kolli has a lot to learn especially away from home, in terms of maintaining possession and being stronger , but I do feel that in the games he’s played he’s been given zero protection from any of the officials in charge . Preston pulled him from Pillar to post and today Norwich roughed him up a bit he didn’t get a free kick all game. |

That Stoke win is a sickener |

Would agree with this too. It’s a terribly low bar admittedly, but I thought Andersen , without really doing anything spectacular had his most solid 45 mins for us since the Leeds game in May. Madsen ….not so sure again |
| Forum Reply | Budgies vs Rs Match Thread at 14:53 29 Dec 2024
It’s a valid point . Not sure about the stats as Smyth does a fair amount of km’s. But as a midfielder you have to be fit enough to do 90 mins, not just 45. It’s not a criticism at all as I really like him as a player . [Post edited 29 Dec 2024 14:56]
