And as a complete side note - starting to get excited for it all to come back, not least to see threads arguing about whether Chair holds onto it too long and not the latest race/religion/political issue in the news (thoughts with all moderators since the Euros ended and we’ve entered this shouty hinterland)

Exactly this - did my 1-24 today. Feels like some bang average teams are going to get in the play offs, while the bottom third is going to be very sore on the eyes. For the first pre-season since Warbs it doesn’t feel like we should be looking over our shoulder too much

Great season for it all to be shown across the box by our Sky ‘football is nothing without the fans’ Overlords.

Do we know anything about him / have any insiders that do? Enjoying having never heard of any of our signings this summer

In isolation yeah. But as above it’s all adding up to become a bigger (unnecessary) issue which then inevitably surfaces when times get hard.

For all that said, only recently saw the ST decision for lower school end which is a big positive - for sake of balance!

Been pretty critical of how poorly I think this comms/media/PR strategy plays long term - see all the stans of Nourry turn and start saying this once we lose a few in a row. There may well be some logic in the idea that it makes all about Marti and then when he eventually goes they think it’ll be a vacuum, and that some managers (Honest Mick) say things that then become an albatross for their tenure (we won’t sign loan players honest guv).

But fundamentally I just don’t think any of that justifies shutting us out. We are their primary stakeholders and will be here longer than any manager, CEO or player. We deserve the chance to have some accountability mechanisms where we can ask informed questions of them - like Clive’s interview - and to do that we need to know some of the information - like contract lengths. That’s not even to start on a behind close doors pre season schedule.

Have to wonder how they will now use the FF, hoping that they do at all. For those brave souls who go, I hope this is put to them and they reconsider the position they’re taking.

I don’t think it’s asking too much to have transparency, and it’s totally elementary to whether CN’s signings are great or crap. It is the least we deserve and a massive shot in their foot if things go south.

My word “yearning for the old days” is some extrapolation from a comment about not announcing contract lengths or when a new player is signed!

I get the positivity around the way business is being conducted but my goodness it is possible for things to better and not perfect - or is it only the case that you either love everything about the new CEO or you are a heretic who hates him?!

He’s done a lot of good stuff and he’s far better than the last guy. I don’t like the way they’re creating shadowy veils around signings and contracts.

If that constitutes yearning for the good old days of Rio wearing number 5 caps and going to Malaysia on tour for you then fair play

Makes sense. Just lost patience with all the unnecessary smoke and mirrors - the last two signings was very Sunday league - and that’s before the season has even started and we can moan about actual football.

Never once suggested he hasn’t done a good job so far? Two things can be true at once; he’s clearly brought new ideas to a stagnating board room and the contracts/not announcing players until they’re spotted in videos is a massive PR/comms own goal.

Criticism and praise can co-exist

Given multiple journos were reporting Celar was done yday, could be holding it up already. Or maybe they won’t announce either and we just have to wait for a training video or a team sheet on the 10th to know?

Us mere mortals as fans are not allowed to know who plays for our club or for how long we can expect them to anymore

National vote share correct. Look at proportional swings and look at where Corbyn won - and he won huge don’t get me wrong. But winning Manchester/Birmingham/London seats by 50k majorities doesn’t win Labour elections, winning middle England does.

Remember there are hundreds of millions of people in the world who don’t get to choose their leaders. Millions who have died for us to go to ballot box and express our voice. Just 150 years ago the vast majority of us on this site, probably all of us, would not have been allowed to vote.

Please use your vote in some capacity (even if that’s spoiling it). With the rise of populism - bordering on fascism - around western democracies this matters.

Use. Your. Vote.

Just when you think they can’t get more out of touch they start an attack line against Starmer for *checking notes* wanting to spend time with his kids on a Friday night and *oh right* in line with his Wife’s religious customs.

They are truly through the looking glass if they think this is gotcha politics. Everything crossed the mega defeat is accurate.

Can’t believe his and Willock’s contracts expire in 4 days and there’s been nothing on it. Not even, in case of Willock, much speculation!

EFL Fixtures out on 26 June.....So
at 12:08 26 Jun 2024

Do we know if the TV splitting is permanent across the length of the new deal? I.e., if it divides the viewership as discussed and the economic effect is as bad as it seems would they be obliged to continue it no matter what?

Trying to kid myself into believing we can still save the 3pms long term

If it puts anyone else’s mind at ease - someone on ‘X’ who actually works for a local rag up there has said they’re being frustrated by work permit issues hence the long silence. Suggests it isn’t Marti as his WP would be valid.

In terms of scruples etc, football fans have no right to be annoyed when a manager leaves as I think most sensible fans would agree? As everything, it’s about timing and luck. Our ideal situation - if we take him leaving as read though as Clive says he could equally get the sack as most managers do - is probably the Beale scenario but a year or two further on (team doing well, *should* be able to continue if the off the pitch stuff is better) or at the end of a season when we’ve achieved something relatively successful (finishing 7-10 this coming season for example).

Personally think the latter is most likely with Marti, and probably to a smart parachute club or Brighton/Brentford. Not a fellow middling championship side who are just as shambolic as us.

Finding this election incredibly depressing as a younger voter.

There has been little to no discussion of the nuanced complex truths around immigration, environment, economic growth that directly affect my ability to live a life as my parents did in the 80s.

I can’t afford to get on the property ladder, can’t get married or have kids yet as I have no capital despite working a good job, can’t go to Europe freely whether to work or for leisure, spend 40% of my income on rent and the best I’m getting is “economic growth”? Bar the greens whose manifesto is pathetically wishful, every other party doesn’t care about u30s so Labour it is and purely hoping we get lucky. But the way our politics treats young voters is a joke.

And then who crops up to tell all in his great wisdom? The privately educated, commodities trading, millionaire people’s hero. Nigel Fing Farage is stood there telling me it’s because of people risking their lives in the channel? Or coming here with all their dependents (while they’re running the god damn NHS)?

Get in the bin and stay there.

One of the many many many cancers Brexit has imposed on this country is his/Johnson’s politics of sound bites and slogans, over serious policy discussions. Go back and watch YouTube clips of Major vs Blair, or Thatcher vs Callaghan, and look at difference in detail. I don’t agree with a lot of those people but you can see their policy offer. If I was 26 in Thatcher’s Britain I’d get what her offer to me was. This lot aren’t even talking to us.

Yes social media plays a part, as does the lessening quality of politicians and smart people choosing private anonymous jobs over Parliament. But the way political parties view us is absolutely in the bin after what those liars were able to do in 2016.

“Reform” “Change” “Green New Deal” are easy to repeat and don’t require any intellect to say. We need to take some of the blame and start asking our politicians to talk to us like adults not children, if we want to be given real choices at elections.

I don’t think they’ll speak to my generation until we hit that magic mark of middle age, but for those of you they do actually care about - do better, for your younger relatives at least.

Apparently this is nonsense. The Beale PTSD has me worried, but from the outside they look like a mess. You’d hope Marti wouldn’t be interested

If he’s not signing a long term extension need to be selling. Not going to make a difference in terms of next season performance (compared to eg Willock second half of last season).

Another one who is clearly getting terrible advice, not sure where they think he’s heading

Totally agree. However we’re now seeing the “winning horse” phenomenon in full swing - Sunak getting decimated for anything he says and Starmer largely left alone because the media have decided he’s going to be PM so best get in their good books long term. Same thing happened to a lesser degree in 2019, and from what I’ve read very much the case in 1997.

Not to say that Sunak and this shambolic set of tories don’t deserve absolute ridicule for what they’ve done to this country, absolute c****
