| News Comment | Russell Martin Reveals Injury Issues For the Visit Of Manchester United at 17:06:50
"It's going to be a lot of selection dilemmas to get into the squad, let alone the starting XI." And that dilemma is one made that much harder with only 9 outfield places to fill after Stephens occupies his floating CB/LB/CDM/"anywhere because he's such good footballer" role. Let's go all in on a double barreled CB pairing of ABK and THB. |
| News Comment | The Course Of The Southampton Season Has Changed In The Last 7 Games at 13:16:09
The goal difference is very important - when we were +4 it effectively put us another point behind the others. We won't better Leicester's I don't think so still an extra point behind them but we should better the other two come the end of the season. However, it all depends on maintaining the current form for another 18 games - I haven't seen Leeds play but saw the game last night and didn't think either Leicester or Ipswich are to be feared... |
| News Comment | Chelsea Blow Liverpool Lavia Offer Out Of the Water at 14:57:23
Saints should just have a "final and best" sealed auction - open it to any other rumored interested parties - and see what number comes out. This way they'll put their real valuation in if they're genuinely serious and we'll get the best price. Selling agent should max his commission that way too so he should be up for it... |
| News Comment | Saints Set To Take Loan Signing As Part Of James Ward Prowse Move at 23:46:14
I understand a player who's had a sniff at PL game time doesn't want a permanent move to Champ team. I think that's different to not wanting to come to us - clearly not rated as a starter (otherwise why buy JWP) and was a favorite id RM before. So I think it sounds more like he wants to play but not be a perm championship player again. Bit like Che probably knows he needs to move on another PL contract now as he might not get one again if he stays in championship and continues to be great at everything other than finishing... |
| News Comment | West Ham Pull Out Of James Ward Prowse Pursuit at 02:21:09
He is very attached to the club and I can't imagine going to West Ham filled him with excitement. West Ham would have seen this and not broken the bank for a player semi committed to the move. He will absolutely shine in the Championship and I think the club are setting a good precedent that only the right money will do. "I would" still expect a top six team to come in for him as he is a class act, Mr I_Would will tell you another story however... |
| News Comment | Saints Tyler Dibling Opts For Chelsea And Money at 13:48:05
Have to say how many protégés have complelty failed to make the grade and now play semi pro if at all? Billy Gilmour was the next best thing at Chelsea and he could only play about half of Norwich's games on loan in a season they went down. Hesketh, Josh Sims etc never made it so if someone is waving 2.5 mn in your face I think it's impossible to turn down. The bigger issue though is how Chelsea can just throw their pocket change at a punt on him leaving us no way to compete. I'd suggest the tribunal that decides compensation should start with 5 x the contract value and work up from there. Big teams would then have to think very hard about how much cash they lure teenagers with and make it a more level plying ground. |
| News Comment | Southampton V Arsenal The Verdict at 14:14:43
Only saw the second half and have no comment on the match. Only comment I have is the way Long celebrated charging down Ramsay and sending the ball out for a throw in in injury time like he’d hit his hat trick goal. Shows to me the team spirit and competitiveness is there still and, per the article above, the team is very much committed to the manager still. Great tonic to last weekend. |
| News Comment | Chelsea "Insider" Reveals Interesting Southampton Broja Transfer news at 15:42:15
If we could buy him this window for, say, 15 - 20 mn and have a buy back if 40 - 50 then that would be an outstanding deal for us. Alternatively paying up now to guarantee a loan for next next (maybe with similar economics at the end) would also be great business. I read he is a life long Chelsea fan so he will likely want a shot to prove himself there at some point but in terms of Sport Reps business model this sort of deal is not incongruous. |
| News Comment | Southampton V Newcastle United Postponed at 04:26:13
Let’s hope no one decent wants to join them and a lot of mediocre more shelvies join their ranks on 300k per week salaries that cripple them in the championship. Per the article, only players eligible for the game tomorrow should be eligible for the rematch… |
| News Comment | Breaking News ! James Ward Prowse Signs 5 Year Deal at 21:37:51
I hope this is reflective of the club explaining to JWP their further transfer targets this summer and ambitions thereafter. I could also read into it that we're actually a lot closer to fresh investment than the forum let on and this was able to persuade him to extend his contract further. Unfortunately it could also be his agent hearing the comments at the forum and holding Saints' feet to fire in light of Villa interest. Knowing Saints would lose future transfer credibility if they accepted an offer for JWP having said the diametrical opposite a few days earlier was probably music to any agent's ears. I'm a half full type so I hope this bodes well for the remainder of the window and potentially future investment also. I must say though the radio silence on a new Center Half concerns me (as does reports agreements are in place to extend McCarthy and Stephens' contracts). |
| News Comment | Ryan Bertrand Turns Down Southampton Contract Offer at 12:46:19
Not only our best defender but for a few years also one of our best attacking threats when overlapping with Redmond. That element of his game has faded unfortunately and as such I understand the pragmatism of the contract offer. It’s a shame though as he’s a bright guy that started in the lower leagues before Chelsea. Part of me wonders if his expressed desires at the business end have threatened a few people who have comfortable incomes and see a smart ex player taking their role and thus deliberately making things awkward? Hope not but corporate strategy is always self serving. I for one wish him all the success going forward (figuratively and on the pitch too!) - a great servant and as nick says legendary status. |
| News Comment | Southampton V Burnley The Verdict at 13:41:44
From memory we were 2-0 up against man Utd and I was thinking Europe was on the cards. We slumped and lost 3-2 and that was the start of the terrible we’ve endured. Let’s hope doing the opposite yesterday will turn the season back around and we can build momentum up again and start next season the same as this one and keep it going. |
| News Comment | Saints At Brighton The Verdict at 03:27:28
Romeu was great I thought and does so much f the non glamorous work for the team.I thought we looked a little tired at times and disjointed but never like we were in trouble even after their goal. My main criticism is why doesn’t KWP take on his man more? He has bags of pace and ability and Bertrand is alway looking to overlap or take on his man. Vallery was supposed reluctant to do so too - is there something tactically weak that prevents right backs from binning firward? Ings brought a different level threat in the second half and I hope he signs an extension soon |
| News Comment | Saints Look To Go Top For The First Time In 32 Years at 12:15:30
I have a feeling on a more recent trip to Arsenal for the 1230pm kick off game five or six seasons ago we had the chance to go top if we beat them (I think they were top at the time). From memory this was the game where Boruc tired a Cruyff turn in the area, sort of tripped over it and Giroud (I think) picked up the ball and rolled it into the back of the net. I was only 8 for the time you mention above, but to this day I can remember the South Today report and how I thought we would win the league! A bit like Christmas, it's all about believing... |
| News Comment | Comprehensive Victory ! But Caution Still Required ! at 12:26:25
The NBC commentator here made the point that we “bossed the first half against Spurs and an error in injury time led us to unravel in the second†and that we probably should have beaten palace. Football full ifs and buts I guess. This was the first Saints game I’ve been able to watch from start to finish and they seemed so well drilled and deliberate. There appears to be really confidence in the two CBs from Romeu and JWP and vice versa in them, as such they are all making good decisions and never look frazzled when closed down. I though JWP was motm by a distance - he gets a lot of groaning in here for playing the the way he’s facing (often backward) but that is the plan to keep possession and you could hear RH praising him in the sidelines when you switch off the piped in crowd noise so he is clearly performing the planned task. At he other end of the pitch, Walcott will keep Redmond and Armstrong on their toes - I think he should replace Redmond but I am probably missing something there as he got motm... |
| News Comment | Stuart Armstrong Set to Miss Chelsea Game After Positive Covid 19 Test at 17:41:35
He was negative when he showed up but positive in a second test. Would suggest he got it in Southampton - let's hope we don't have a raft of players unavailable that got it from him and/or gave it to him. Is there a rule for number of covid isolations that lead to a game being postponed -assume there must be something in place? |
| News Comment | American Takeover Bid For Saints at 01:35:33
A flippant comment above, apologies. However RH led saints to an incredible post lockdown performance which surely would have pricked owners’ ears up everywhere especially with saints record of recent managers in MP and RK linked (and in RK’s case getting) some of the top jobs in the world. For him to be in a rich run of results and commit to Saints hopefully means there’s some runway in this. |
