It goes back to the other thread about playing all this possession football. Birmingham have had 80% possession so far apparently but it's done them no good! Good luck to Gas, I hope he succeeds there. |
| Forum Reply | Where have the goals gone in the Championship? at 17:22 21 Nov 2024
Yeah this is true and I must admit I get very bored watching football these days. Not sure if I have lost interest or like you say, there's just too much messing about trying to get pass completion and possession stats in your favour. England do it as well. The Ireland match was a case in example. First half, we got to the by-line quite often but it ended up going back to a centre back. Why?! Play a quality ball in the box quickly. They did that in the second half and suddenly it was raining goals. Okay they had a man sent off but it just shows, make an insightful pass and you're in usually. You might lose the ball temporarily but if you are a good team you'll win it back soon enough. One of the few teams that are enjoyable to watch sometimes are Brighton. They play that crazy high line thing and go at teams. Man City couldn't cope a few weeks ago. Other than that I am generally uninspired by so called 'big matches' these days. Maybe I am just getting old. |

On form and on paper we are going to get beaten very comfortably. But football (and QPR particularly) is an odd game sometimes. If Leeds turn up thinking they're in for a cricket score that could be the only thing that saves us and we grab a 1-0 away win. I mean, it's not likely but you have to have some sort of hope! On the other hand it could be all over by half time. |

Double standard refereeing again. Arsenal did this (last year?) against Bayern Munich but the referee dismissed it as a silly mistake despite Tuchel totally losing his s**t. Yet another reason not to be taking these short goal kicks every time. I am surprised there isn't a stat out there which shows how many goals are actually conceded because of messing about with it at the back. I bet it's a significant contribution especially for those teams (like ours) who just don't have defenders with the technical ability to play intricate passes under pressure. |

Mark Wood steams in just as fast but his injuries are a result of his maximum effort every match. Carse can get up to 90mph so I think that's why England like him but he is still very raw and has a lot to learn. I think our bowling attack will hopefully develop over the next few years, to be fair when we've had Jimmy and Stuart that was always at least one if not two spots taken every test match so others haven't had a prolonged stint in that position. Let's see how the likes of Carse and Potts fair after a year or two. Even Jimmy took a few matches to get into his stride before he became as good as he was. |

Agreed, the price of a ticket is just not comparable for a lot of other sports, even football. Yes, you get a days entry but it is not a guarantee of a days play with weather or Bazball etc. However to be fair the time of year for the Sri Lanka series didn't help. A lot of cricket fans would have already spent money throughout the summer and the kids would have mostly been back at school. I really enjoy Test cricket but there is a still an element of elitism when it comes to pricing and accessibility compared with some of the other formats of the game. Congratulations to Joe Root, he looked in absolute agony with cramp for most of the afternoon there, no idea if he made it up the dressing room steps unaided, he could barely walk! |
| Forum Reply | Boxing AJ v Dubois at 07:53 22 Sep 2024
Boxing is a joke of a sport. Until they have a system that means promoters can't just pick and choose who fights who it will always only be about money. Have a ranking system or a league table so that fights have to be scheduled based on ability or who's turn it is to fight who. AJ and Fury should have happened YEARS ago. If it ever does happen now it won't be as entertaining or meaningful. Neither are champions and both are probably past their prime. AJ should retire now or go back to fighting opponents at his level. |
| Forum Reply | Where are all the insects? at 19:09 22 Jul 2024
I get mocked at work if I point out things like this. "Ah summer has always been this way, it's not even that hot" (There's enough data out there now to show pretty clearly what is going on. As scientists predicted many years ago, in the UK we are now having milder winters and more extreme weather in summer) "There's no point in doing anything here anyway, look at China, India etc etc" (People in glass houses and all that. Plus if we keep up the demand for buying pointless crap mass produced in those countries then we are culpable) "How can there be droughts when it is always raining?" (Because we don't have a big enough natural landscape any more to slow the flow of water and it now causes flooding and rushes out to sea before we can make use of it) "Things always go in cycles don't they?" (Yes but thanks to our impact we're about to go into overdrive with our current climate model) I reallly really hope he lack of insects this year is due to the wet spring and early summer but I fear it goes much deeper than that. The use of pesticides, monocultures, climate, all have an influence. I've also noticed less birds this year and that would make sense if there aren't insects to eat or plants being pollinated. Humans have a great way to come up with solutions in times of crisis I just wish we had more foresight and weren't so careless with how we treat this planet. It looks like it will take getting to a really bad point before we as humans start making the changes that were needed DECADES ago. But you know the mega rich who have benefitted from these industries will be absolutely fine. On a lighter note if you want to see butterflies and birds and give yourself some hope go to Horsenden Hill nature reserve in Perivale/Greenford. You can regularly see Kestrels, Red Kites and even Buzzards. The meadows are amazing and have colour and variety throughout the year. I had a walk through today and counted at least 8 species of butterfly within 20 minutes. Plus on a Saturday they open their on site brewery. Wood fired pizzas as well, what's not to like! |
| Forum Reply | Trump shot at. at 09:30 14 Jul 2024
I am not saying this is definitely something Trump has set up himself I would just say I wouldn't put it past him or his administration to orchestrate something to this degree. His list of serious criminal acts is long yet he seems to have got away with them all. In fact in the ruling a few weeks ago they've basically facilitated any future president to act in the exact same way. But yes most likely this is yet another gun toting nutter and America will NEVER learn about their gun laws. To be honest (and unfortunately) I am surprised it has been so long since an incident like this. |
| Forum Reply | Trump shot at. at 08:12 14 Jul 2024
Was just saying this and was told to not to be such a conspiracy theorist. But of his whole body mass, you knicked his ear and then couldn't readjust over the next few seconds to get his body mass. Smells like a rat to me. Like people say this will make him even more insufferable. Disclaimer: Obviously I condemn any kind of violence, especially when it comes to politics. |

I agree with you in that Southgate has build a team of players where previous managers have failed to create that spirit and cohesion. But I think we do dominate in a lot of games we just don't seem to make enough chances. Rather than play a first time ball or have runners getting into positions (until Watkins came on) we hold on to it for too long. But it is hard to do in international football as you might not get the ball back as quickly against teams who are going to be playing possession football. As much stick as England get for being negative and boring I really don't remember oppositions in this tournament having extended periods of possession in our half of the pitch, or not often anyway. Other than the goal the Dutch had no really chances other than from set pieces and they're supposed to be just as good as us. And I think that is down to how we set up. They had to change their system after half an hour because they couldn't cope with our midfield. Who knows maybe another manager might have got us tournament success by now but I think we've always had a talented group of players since the late 90s yet Southgate is the first manager we've had who has pushed the team to genuine contenders and finalists. He is clearly popular with most if not all the players, I bet that wasn't the case over the years with some of the 'big names' we've had. |
| Forum Reply | England v Switzerland Quarter Final match thread at 18:29 6 Jul 2024
Seriously I have tried really hard to be patient and excepting that international football is a lot more tetchy and more at risk per game but I'm so bored of this now. All those talented players and we can barely have a shot let alone score a goal. Just gamble and try some quicker and more forward passes. If you lose the ball in their third then so what, they haven't looked amazing going forward either. Really want to get behind the team but it is so dull and uninspiring. |

Reform are a company backed by a right wing millionaire, they are not a political party. They have 5 seats yet will get 100x the political coverage than say the Greens (4 seats) because they are backed by a right wing media. Even the BBC give them a completely disproportionate amount of coverage. Their deputy leader has said regarding migrants in boats "left to drown". Nigel Farage dresses and mimics many of the mannerisms of Adolf Hitler. Lee Anderson? The less said the better. They've convinced a large proportion of the population that they are totally legitimate and aren't 'racist'. Let's see how Farage deals with the scrutiny of being an actual MP now. His finances will be very interesting reading. Let's give this Labour government a chance, the Tories spent 14 years ripping up the basic infrastructure of this country. It's no coincidence that the number of billionaires has dramatically risen over the last decade. Labour have already: Called for an outright ceasefire in the Middle East and the call for a two party state (really wasn't that difficult to say was it). Have stated they will open negotiations with junior doctors as early as next week (again, not difficult to sit down and talk with people is it, that's your job). Scrapped the illegal and immoral Rwanda policy. (That has cost £240 million pounds and was going to cost over £1million plus per person 'deported'). I'd say that's progress within 48 hours. Anyway let's just try and be positive about the future at least rather than slagging off each other and people who have barely had a chance to settle in to the office. |

I noticed that 3 GB tennis players got asked if they were going to be voting today and they all basically said NO and not interested. I wonder how much of that attitude across the country will be going on today? I think we can get so wrapped up in following the latest on the elections and talking within a circle of people who are quite interested but I get the impression there is a huge proportion of our population who are completely apathetic to the whole thing. Which is a shame. I'd imagine we may actually get a broader political debate and be able to put pressure on the government to actually do what they say and not just make empty promises all the time. |
| Forum Reply | Sky Games at 18:39 3 Jul 2024
This has been happening in the Premier League for years. How many 3pm home fixtures to the 'big 6' actually have in a season? 5? For those big clubs it tends to be fine as there is a big enough support base and tourists/day trippers who actually go to the games. But for most of the football league this is going to have a big detrimental effect on supporters. I have the utmost respect for those of you who manage to still get to games week in week out. It sounds like these changes are going to be the final straw for some. I just don't see how there is such a demand out there to have it televised at all times. Most pubs are on their knees aren't they? And who can afford a Sky Sports subscription these days?! Surely it can't just be for the benefit of the international market? |
