Rickie Lambert - a question... 13:51 - Aug 16 with 5407 viewsTVOS1907

I'm just writing a piece for TVOS and have noticed that Rickie has now scored in international football, the Premier League, all three current divisions of the Football League, the play-offs, the FA Cup, the League Cup and the Football League Trophy (JPT, etc.).

I know Robert Earnshaw achieved something similar, but is this a record? I can't think of anyone else, especially for England.

When I was your age, I used to enjoy the odd game of tennis. Or was it golf?

The Watford and Swansea players won't have played in the Football League Trophy (JPT) either, as it didn't start until 1983/84, when it was called the Associate Members' Cup.

What about Shaun Goater - if playing for Bermuda counts as a cap?

Just done a bit of research on Goater and he achieved the feat, but I think Lambert could be the first England player to do it.

Fair point.

This would presumably rule out most of the Watford, Swansea and Wimbledon contingent who rose through the leagues in the 1980s on the grounds of age - can't think of any youngish, capped strikers from those teams (I don't think Luther Blisset's season at Bury involved the playoffs).

Having said that Parlane would have played in the not so infamous Full Members Cup and Rickie Lambert hasn't so swings and roundabouts and all that.

Good shout with Parlane. The 1983 Billy Mcneill City side was my first experience of live football - dad took me to Maine Road when I was a small puppy. City were massively in debt at the time after the excesses of the second Big Mal era 1979/80 and relegation (David Pleat and white slip-ons running on Maine Road pitch). The astute Mcneill managed to get City back up with a team of free transfers and a massive Scottish contingent such as Parlane, Tolmie, Mcnab and Melrose. Mt fist football hero was the young flying winger Paul Simpson - funny how things work out.

Complete wild stab in the dark here...what about Peter Beardsley?

Edit: And from the same era, Cyril Regis and David Platt?

Right, have dusted down the Rothman's and found that:

Beardsley didn't score in the Football League Trophy or play-offs

Regis didn't score in the Football League Trophy, play-offs or for England

Platt didn't score in the third tier, Football League Trophy or play-offs.

Couple more names to add to the mix - Simeon Jackson (Canada) and Anthony Pilkington (Eire) ? Not sure if Jackson has scored in lge1 or Pilkington the Championship though?

Its a BRILLIANT goal to cap a BRILLIANT start by Rochdale - Don Goodman 26/08/10
