Nelsen Joins Toronto Feb 1. on 18:34 - Jan 23 by BrianMcCarthy | I wish him the best, but I'm incredibly disappointed that he thinks it's ok to leave mid-contract with us in the mire. He's been great for us on the pitch, but the job's only half done. If I could make the City game I naturally wouldn't give him grief but I wouldn't be throwing any garlands on him either. He gave his word, and he gave it in ink. Both should mean something. |
But how many clubs or players show loyalty these days ? I'm old enough to remember when players got a testimonial after 10 years service, just doesn't happen now !!

Anyone of you posters with a family that are knocking him would/should do the same thing in a similar situation. 100% good luck to the bloke and thanks. That's It In a nutshell
| My Father had a profound influence on me, he was a lunatic. |

I don't think he broke his word. He asked to be let out of his contract and the club agreed. It's highly likely that sometime last year Kevin Payne told Nelsen that he was leaving Washington soon and looking for a new MLS club –Â he didn't then know when or where. He asked Nelsen if he'd be interested in managing. Nelsen said yes. He then signed a short term playing deal with us. Based on the club's sympathetic response he almost certainly let them know about the possibility of his leaving when he signed. He certainly didn't expect to playing as often as he has. We certainly didn't expect to be relying on him as much as we have. QPR's management could have held him to his contract, they haven't. If they had, based on what we've seen of the type of player, and human being, he is he'd have carried on performing to the best of his ability. I think all three parties: QPR, Nelsen and Toronto FC (who BTW have fans wondering why their new manager wasn't around for the Superdraft a couple of weeks back) have handled a difficult situation in a rational and generous manner.
Nelsen Joins Toronto Feb 1. on 21:21 - Jan 23 with 499 views | DylanP | Look, its a contract. Its a risk for both parties. QPR took a risk signing a contract with him. He could easily have gotten injured after 4 minutes (err ... a certain Dyer springs to mind) and QPR would have been out all the money with nothing to show for it. But there is also a risk for the player in signing a contract. The risk for the player is that something better would come along and he would be stuck under contract. He knew the risk when he signed the contract. In this case, something better has come along. I appreciate that he wants to jump at the better opportunity, and that is fair enough. That doesn'yt make him a bad person or anything. Like someone else said, I would want to take the better opportunity too, if the shoe was on the other foot. That is why Toronto should pay us for buying out his contract. Like I said, we paid 9M to buy out Reme's contract. Why shouldn't we get 9M from Toronto for them to buy out Nelsen's contract? Maybe 5 million? That is what he is worth to us.

Ted, I see that too of course, and I understand both points of view. I'm not raging about this or anything, just stating how I feel about it having considered it all.

Perhaps because QPR signed the contract with the knowledge that he might leave before it's expiry and agreed to those terms. Nelsen, I believe, signed with us as a free agent so there was no pre-existing contract to purchase. He has presumably been paid a wage while at the club, that ends now. The club could claim compensation for the balance of the season, but Nelsen – in response – could just retire instead and take up the management position anyway.

I see by your signature you're a fan of the Milligan. You've just inspired my bed-time book for tonight. Think I'll start with "Adolf Hitler..." "Dúirt mé leat go raibh mé breoite"
