I was hoping loans were out as a basis for building a team.

If he's here for a 'season-long loan', it's the equivalent of a 12 month contract, surely. It's the short term loans that are the problem, such as Nathan Eccleston, Barnes-Homer, Benali who have nothing to offer nor any future here.

JC's an old fashioned manager who doesnt believe in loan deals generally, to build a team around. Loan deals like this, and Darby last season, are different, because as you say, they are on, the equivalent of a short term contract.

Trouble with the Barnes Homer ( et al) deals last season, they were not really short term....we had to pay the tosser up till December when it was apparent to everyone he was not up to the job within hours of his arrival and contract signed!

If "he doesn't belive in loan deals generally", then why would he be considering this one (if he is)? He either doesn't believe in them or he does - even scousers cant be half pregnant can they? We dont need any more mixed messages - dont tell us one thing then do the other. I understood his comment to mean with the exception of emergency loans (such as injuries leaving short term gaps in the squad) he does not plan on building a squad that is dependent on loans (whether they be short or long).

The key word, and the answer to your "half-pregnant scouser" problem, is... dependent A player from a major club who's signed up for the season is quite possibly a more secure member of the squad than someone who's under contract but playing out of their skin and therefore attracting interest from clubs higher up the league! Think... Craig Dawson. It's short-term loans involving players who might be recalled at a moments notice that JC doesn't want to be dependent on; no continuity, no sense of belonging.

Ryan Edwards on 21:45 - May 31 with 1631 views | 442Dale | A one year deal is a one year deal. At the end of the year we can look at offering a club/player something to stay longer. Where it went wrong last season was getting in players out of necessity and them not performing (Symes and Edwards), employing a 'they did well in youth football' approach (Benali, Eccleston, Ball) or woeful (MBH, Bergkamp) Where would we be without the excellent loanees of the past few years? Possibly our finest ever display, Bradford away, contained a side with four loan players in it - Heaton, Taylor, Atkinson and COG. The crucial thing is having a strong base on which to add loanees too. [Post edited 1 Jan 1970 1:00]

the only problem with long term loan deals is if he gets injured or turns out not to fit in with our style of play but on the whole quite happy that we looking so early on this year at players rather than leaving it to last minute .com players who just want to pick up a pay cheque
