It's not a war of mass troop movements, because of drones, artillery and missiles. Any mass movements would be destroyed easily as everything can be seen from above. Russia in particular because of it's satellite network can see everything on the battlefield and it's intelligence is excellent. Last year it destroyed the entire Black sea drone operation , run primarily by the British. One well placed missile is all it took, it's why there haven't been any attacks on Russian shipping since.This conflict is of smaller formations trying to gain advantages over a huge frontline. NATO has not seen anything like this. It's a new and different kind of warfare, which we are not prepared for, but Russia is doing it now but just as brutal if not more so. At that point I suspect that the Russian Navy decided that something had to be done and, having carefully studied their foe, put a plan into action to destroy what was to them the most concerning part of the BSAN - the maritime drone program.
Using a few rusty old ships as bait the Russian command observed the signal activities during Ukrainian attacks, uncovered the British run network, and finally killed it:
Deployed without support in the Kerch Strait during a large-scale (albeit unsuccessful) aerial drone raid, the Kotov attracted the attention of Ukrainian sea drones heading for another round with the Kerch Bridge. Yes it is very Machiavelian as you say and seems like America and Russia might be about to carve the Ukraine up, although no doubt some Ukraine will stay, will it be an American puppet in charge ? (is there one in charge now ?), its what America has been accused of doing since the second World War, destabilise countries, overthrow governments by backdoor means and get a puppet in
