Starmer! Wow! on 07:46 - Nov 6 by Boundy | If you could , please could you explain why these rises will n oy affect the students , my understanding is that the fees are loans which have to be paid back. |
Because they won't increase monthly payments and in the current system it's unlikey that the loans will be paid back anyway. The system is not fit for purpose and needs a toatal re think as per my point about degree protectionism. [Post edited 6 Nov 12:30]

Starmer! Wow! on 10:45 - Nov 6 by Scotia | Yes the taxpayer should fund them. The taxpayer needs them. Are there any Dr's who can't find a job? Or Dentists? Or Physiotherapists? Etc, etc. They deserve to earn more money than anyone else. |
They will earn more, which is the point. They will earn more than me because i will have funded them in the first place, so they can charge me a fortune when i want physio or dentistry

They'll earn more than you because they're doing a more difficult job than you're either capable of or want to do. Most will do private work on the side becasue they can or NHS contracts are appalling, you only need to pay for a private physio or dentist becasue there aren't enough in the NHS. It comes back to the point of public sector pay increases and austerity to a certain extent.. Pay for them to train on the proviso of a long term, golden handcuff NHS contract.

It's their choice to train for those jobs it wasn't mine. I still had to pay for them though.

It's their job, it's what i pay then to do, before and after training. Just like the police, military or any public servants.

So what are you moaning about , you paid for their training so they could and can continue to provide health care for you and your family.

Most people could do other public servant jobs on the whole, at least at a junior level. Very few people have the ability or desire to be a Medic. Especially when it comes to paying back 10's of thousands pounds of debt on a junior Dr's salary. You pay them to work they pay for themselves to be able to work and there aren't enough of them. Pay for them through uni and contract them to the NHS.

All people training for the NHS should be paid a bursary to cover training and expenses then be tied in for 5 years minimum.

I agree. Medics aren't going to work anywhere other than the NHS for years, they shouldn't be going in to debt to do that

Starmer! Wow! on 08:22 - Nov 6 by Scotia | Medical degrees of all sorts shouldn't result in debt to the student. The problem with encouraging apprenticeships is that universities have grown to become the biggest employer in most cities, even though I agree with the principle. I dread to think the state Swansea would be in if it wasn't for the two uni's. |
I have long said that the Govt should be offering completely free (salaried, accommodation paid for etc) degrees for medical personnel such as Doctors and Dentists in return for a significant commitment to NHS service. 20-25 years of doing only NHS work still gives them a good 10-15 years to fill their boots with private work afterwards. We also need to wean ourselves off the idea that other medical professions such as Nursing, Physiotherapy etc also require a degree.

I tend to agree, but the BMA tends to hold the power in these matters

I've never understood why nurses have to go through a degree course. It's almost the ultimate vocational job, but much more technical than a few years ago. It still seems to be a bit pointless.

Policing is going the same way. There is absolutely no need for any Copper to have a degree.

My sister had been a nurse for over 20 years beofre she specialised, she was then an oncology nurse but to get a pronotion she had to go back to college to get a degree where other people of that grade were already in post without degrees. The NHS survuved and thrived for decades on the back of experience being promoted and used to train the next wave. Now they put university graduates straight into senior jobs with no experience and look at the mess.

Like an awful lot of things wrong with Society today, the roots lie with Blair and New Labour. The insane drive to have 50% of school/college leavers go to University has royally screwed up the Labour market, left millions of people paying off utterly pointless student loans. and left us with a serious shortage of skilled workers. There are plenty of people out there with pointless degrees who would be much better off if they'd learned a trade instead.

It's more technical now, yes, but it's the care workers that actually give the hands on patient care. It's still the docs who make the diagnosis, set the care plans and decide on the drugs to use etc Nursing is vocational for some, but not others. For some it's just a career path

There really isn’t However, this is not a new thing The accelerated promotion scheme has been in effect for a long time. Pass Sgts exam then Inspectirs made up to the rank then after four yrs , you’re a full rank Inspector. They used to be posted to one of my stations as it was a tinder box . Stay out of strife for two yrs then next rank calls. The days of thief taking coppers is well gone ,as are beat bobbies and many Traffic officers . Do Abbott actually wants Dog Sections disbanded It’s a mad world
