Rumours he's gone to Hearts.

Strange how as soon as we are rumoured to be selling a player he immediately becomes twice as good as he ever was and worth loads more money.

Wasn’t he the best on earth?

For a player that played over 160 games for u, I cannot recall him ever tearing up any tress, being consistent or actually proofing that he’s a solid Championship player. If it is a fee of circa £1-1.5M we’ve had their pants down and it’s a job well done.
Never a Championship player and will maybe be ok in L1 - although I doubt it. No loss for us.

1 - 1.5 million with several bidding clubs? Hearts? Millwall? Birmingham? Blackburn?

Funny thing is those fans of the said clubs are as clueless and bewildered as us here in this forum about the supposed “interest”, some thought the rumours generated here!

Agent talk or pseudo-journo on social having a field day?

The Athletic's usually pretty reliable as long as they're not covering Forest.

are there several bidding clubs? I think that would drive the price up but not sure those other clubs actually came in for him

2M-2.5M seems about right, based on Championship experience, proven he can score at this level and Scotland international.

1M is well worth a gamble for Brum, surprised we couldn’t get a bit more (maybe though add on’s?)

Have to say I'm surprised Millwall haven't come back if it's only £1m. They've let Nisbet go back to Scotland, they've only got two strikers and one of those has never played higher than League Two until this year, long term admirers, suits a Harris "system"...

Agreed and I reckon he'd end up doing well there.

It feels more like we're desperate to shift his wage rather than bothered about getting any transfer fee for him.

Agreed!

We signed him for c.£2m in 2020 and renegotiated his deal in 2023 so we should be looking at around £1.625m amortised at the start of this season.

£1m gives a c. £625k profit on sale plus the release of his wages - if we said £15k a week (no idea obviously) it’s a further £750k minimum freed up. So c.£875k per season for FFP.

Say we signed a replacement on £10k a week on a 4 year deal we could afford to pay £1.5m - 2m and have it be a net zero FFP transaction.

Now obviously I don’t work for the club and have the FFP toolkit infront of me so it’s all cigarette paper workings but people shouldn’t panic at ‘only’ £1m as that’s not how FFP works.

Where the financial sense in getting rid of his wages and then blowing all that and more on an inexperienced replacement?
Club need to sell a player for decent money this week: thought that was meant to be the model nowadays?

wages are what kills you with FFP, transfer fees can be split over a few years but if he's one of our highest earners and not likely to be first choice it does make some sense

I think people think that dykes being Scotland national team forward should get us more than one million.

He got more caps (and goals, believe you me) than che adams or Lawrence shankland

But honestly I don’t know the value of adams nor shankland, however all three about the same age.

That’s not saying a lot about Scotland but that’s not the point.

Sure but it’s a buyers market ultimately - we want to move on from Dykes, by all accounts he’s earning decent money so you have to take what you can get.

We would’ve only ever given him a new deal and a pay-bump last summer expecting that he was going to move on shortly and it didn’t happen so now we have to unravel that decision. If £1m is all anyone is willing to ask then it’s what we have to take.

Sky Sports now saying £1.5m+

Still seems low for an International striker, but if that's all we can get for a player who may not fit our preferred style of play then I suppose we take it, get his wages off the books and move on.

A bidding war you say....

"I have £1m from Birmingham, any advance on £1m?..... Hearts £1m and 1p, thank you..... now £1m and 2p from Birmingham again, ........ £1m and 3p from Millwall...... can anyone go to £1m and 4p?........"

Surprised Millwall didn't try harder. £1-1.5m for a guy who'll be 29 soon and is, allegedly, on decent wages, isn't a bad deal for us.
Let's hope Celar and Frey stay fit. Otherwise we're reliant on Kolly & Lloyd, neither of whom have notched a league goal, as yet.

I agree. It's kind of ironic than when we are in the hunt for a striker , they are such a precious commodity and yet when we have an established Championship (don't tell me he is not Championship standard after the quality of his goal v Sheff Utd) and International (doesn't matter what country) striker then he is not worth at least 2m. Bargain for Brum IMO. I was disappointed with the sale of Armstrong, but accepted 2.5 m was a good deal for an unproven striker. But 1m for Dykes is really poor. If he was in the final year fair enough but he's not.

Bemused not everyone is glad about this. What is Dykes good at?

He has a poor first touch and technique. He's a very unreliable finisher. He doesn't score headers (or win many), he doesn't create assists, he's not particularly fast. Every season he's been the number 9 there are threads on here suggesting that what this team needs is a number 9 to flourish.

He's 29 next month and therefore as a CF past his prime. He cost £2 million and scored 37 goals in 166 games. He's been a poor signing by any metric. To my eyes, this season's Frey looks to be better at Dykes's role - strong number 9, bullies CBs, chases balls, threat in the air, veteran - and that we need a different, more agile and much younger CF to be third choice.

A million quid for a well-paid CF who doesn't score or assist goals at Championship level and is about to hit 29 years-old is great business, surely.

Dykes is basically 3rd choice, he is going to score sometimes and that sometime was at Sheffield. He is not good enough for a Club like ours and not a Championship standard.

Also, I think Frey looks better than last year, how good he is I reserve judgement. Cedar looked better on Saturday although he did not take a couple of opportunities.

Personally never felt we would get much for Dykes, the best chance of decent money was about 3 years ago when he got into Scotland squad and scored a couple of goals for them and a few for us, but the bottom fell out of the market due to the Covid pandemic. All round a marmite player prefer Frey think he is starting to come good and if Celar can get off the mark his confidence will be up.

Agree, and goes back to what we were saying in the other thread, Clive. Suspect he won't be the last leaving this week. Whatever anyone says about departures, Sky money etc, we likely need to recoup some outlay.

Absolutely this. We’ve spent somewhere in region of 5/6/7m this summer. There were people on here saying we had to sell to be prudent, now we’re selling at what the market clearly will offer (don’t think they would have started out at this ballpark) - I recall milwall offering something similar a while back with lots of add ons - and we’re getting in a huff about it?

How many times are we going to want our cake and eat it. Frey and Celar with maybe a cheap ish loan at week’s end is all we can afford. A club like ours can’t have 3/4 first choice strikers in the ffp era

He's on very good money which is why they wanted him out. I'd be surprised the combined wages of Frey & Celar are much more than Dykes alone

daft price and stupid sale ,

celar nowhere the pce of the championship and from the games iver seen so far not ever sure he will ever get there

frey better on sat but come on its like watching your dear old dad have hi last run out for a sunday league side , if them two get us 10 goals ill be hugely supprised ,

dykes never had a run of goaldsas he never had a sun or regular decent balls into the box we finally it seems to have sorted that small problem out and we then decide to sell him , money ball at its best on this move ,

Poll: which is your favouite foot
