Your last paragraph and penultimate sentence that the club would never be the same again is really telling. For those of us that were there during the Venables era from 1980 to 1984, what a team, competitive, creative and could play just as well away from the plastic pitch. The game has changed a lot since those days but I bet the quality of those players would be very capable in the modern game. Mullery was a disaster, Jim Smith did well when he came in, but in my mind the Rangers were not really as consistently good as they were under Venables.

We've missed three enormous opportunities in my mind.
1 - Venables departure.
2 - asset stripping the 90s team and getting relegated instead of buying a couple of Kasey Keller types that would have put us into trophy and European contention (as Leicester subsequently did, having been miles behind us).
3 - The way Fernandes went about the Prem, twice.

Those 3, all so poignant and so true especially losing Venables

A bit of nonsense, but to add to the frustration:

1. If Francis was available / ready post Venables he would have been the ideal manager
2. If Fernandes was our Chairman in the 90s he would almost certainly have gone trophy hunting

Obviously neither would have been a guarantee of success but just makes you think.

I think if we got relegated this season we may well look back in years to come as another missed opportunity. Hopefully we can take the chance we have been given by staying up and really push on under Marti. Still difficult to know what success really looks like for this team, squad, manager, club in its current form, but I would probably be happy with 16th and a stress free year. Not sure Marti (rightly) will be so apathetic.
