UK Beer. Shift to Lower ABV% . 10:26 - Jul 29 with 12621 viewsDiscodroids

Up until recently I was able to buy 5 star red Mahou beer  at the original ABV 5.1% . I've noticed that i can now only purchase a lower strength 4.5% version brewed for the UK . The bottles have these cheap labels stuck on them,  not the embossed logo on the original brew. It tastes completely different.

Also i've  noticed Cruzcampo, which is sunk to the nuts everywhere in every bar and club across the land,  is a knock off UK brewed lower ABV of the original.  It's nothing like the original In Spain.  Same with Japanese Kirin Ichiban,  can't get the original brew anymore, just a lower ABV UK fugazi. Rosa Blanca that ambrosial Lager from Mallorca, we get a 3.4% version of the 5% original. 3. 4% ! that's top deck shandy levels.

Moretti,  Leffe , Stella and Brewdog lost and IPA punk have also dropped the ABV% of their brews in the last 6 or so months.

I understand that Madri is a uk brewed product but I can no longer buy Portuguese Superbock or Sagres , Spanish Moritz, or German Warsteiner and Paulaner from any main supermarket that  were  freely available just 3 months ago.  Even Those  harry monk  brews carlsberg , Carling and fosters are dropping their ABV to risible 3.4% and 3.6% respectively.

Why?, Can't the regular sociable drinking public be responsible for ourselves?? Can't we be trusted to consume beers as they were created in their original format??. Is it to do with tax laws/import duty on beers over a certain ABV percentage making it economically unviable for brewers to export beer to the UK?. Even stuff thats brewed in the UK is being reduced to baxter soup thin gruel.

We are  left with the world knowing the UK has the weakest mainstream beer in the world, at the highest prices.

The last government through total incompetence will end up destroying the great British beer heritage.

Rant over, i'm off to stick me finger in my ear playing the Bodhrán to steeleyespan.

Another thing which makes me laugh is that I occasionally go to my local if there's a match on TV (avoid it otherwise, since it's a bit too "hipster" for this old git).

Anyhow, if I'm going to be driving or whatever, I'll sometimes just have a pint or two of shandy. Everytime the barmaid will ask: "Which lager would you like?" and I'll reply: "Whatever's cheapest...".

I guess she's being polite just in case I somehow had a preference etc, but she might know, as I usually add: "... since it all tastes of the lemonade anyhow."

P.S. I don't mind which lager, but don't EVER accept diet/sugar-free lemonade in a shandy, since some of them really foul the taste somehow.

Japan chose to tax beer on its malted barley content rather than alcoholic strength, becaause they wanted to protect traditional products like sake (rice) and shochu (sweet potatoes). Brewers came out with a low-malt (same alcohol) beer called happoshu which they were able to sell for about Y180 rather than Y230 a can. Although it tasted horrible, it was a success with alcoholics and with housewives, who bought it for their husbands to drink, The brewers then came our with enticingly-named "third category" beer, where the malt was entirely replaced with pea protein and sold for about Y140 a can (currently about 70p). Strangely, though not as nice as proper beer, it tastes much better than happoshu, though you can still buy both. You can also get alcopops in a can, up to 9% proof, which appear to be the lowest taxed of all...discount stores and supermarkets sell half-litre tins for less than 60p. This country would go up in flames if it happened here.

When I went to Dallas, I had to try Lonestar just based on true Detective. I’m back there next month and I will get my fix again. To me, it just taste like PBR, Miller, national Bohemian, they all taste the same.
As somebody that rarely drinks now, due to getting into fitness, I was marketed by a company on Facebook called small beer lager. They’re UK based and the beers are around 2%. There’s definitely a market for these types of beers for people that just want a couple of drinks, but don’t want the alcohol free.

I quite liked this beer in Texas, Shiner Bock, always from an ice-cold cooler and drunk quickly.

I'm somebody who's always suffered bad hangovers over the years. And I mean proper suffering. 🤢

I'd never been to Germany before, but I had 3 visits for 3 England matches in Euro 24. I've been told before that you don't really get hangovers drinking German beer even though it's stronger and a lot nicer than what you get here.

All 3 visits, I had a decent drink, and I didn't suffer from the usual hangover.
I was told that Germany doesn't allow the chemicals that we put in the beer here, and it's the chemicals used over here which gives you the hangover.

What chemicals do they put in the beer over here, and why do they do this?

German beer is proper beer. As soon as I took my first sip, I loved it.

The last government simplified (their words) alcohol duties by making them fiendishly complicated, so beer under 3.4% is £9.27 per litre and £21.01 between 3.5% and 8.5%. They did something similar to wine.

I generally buy British when it comes to beer - picked up a mixed dozen from Kernel the other week. Their Export Stout - London 1890 (7.6%) is as good a beer as you'll find. They ain't cheap but at my age life's too short for cheap beer.

One for another thread but how hard is it these days to get fizzy drinks with actual natural sugar in it??

I know they're all already full of chemicals but I don't need foul-tasting synthetic sweetener as well

I used to love Club Lemon in Ireland, but a couple of years ago I had to spit it out. To add insult to injury, they had written "Less Sugar, Same Great Taste" on the label. I understand the concern to get sugar intake down, but I only drink it three times a year!

More Club Orange myself, but I know what you mean.

And as for Lucozade, formerly my go-to hangover life saver, the sugar-free version is beyond foul.

Mexican coke, made with real sugar, is quite commonly available in the US (in addition to the Sweetener stuff we're allowed in the "Developed" world)

I can't tell much difference tbh, although I'm not really a coke drinker, but Mrs SH was adamant on getting the Mexican version.

My physician, Dr Diamond (hasn't a clue why I call him double), tells me my sugar levels worry him and wants me to give up lager, spuds, pasta and rice. Fcking fascist, I'm changing to Dr McGillacuddy.

That's what I have in my house (though I probably imbibe once a month), smoother taste in my opinion but the original bottle nails it.

Menabrea at 4.8% isn't a bad consolation prize for sub 5% lagers. And still only £2.15 for a 660ml bottle at Waitrose.

Yep thats a good'un mate.

Last time I drank that stuff I was in Argentina in 2005 with two friends in a town resembling a Spaghetti Western set. Loved it.

In other news Mrs SF had 300 odd bottles of Corona left over from one of her events recently so she shipped them back here to HQ for me. My initial reaction was to complain about the brand tasting like anal water but its actually not bad, just checked its 4.50%. Probably tastes ok as I've been drinking other watered down crap for months reading the above.

I used to buy 'no added sugar' squash drinks and decant them into a clear two litre glass bottle I was given by the girls at my old company to put my home made ale in.

After a few fillings the glass went opaque like it had lemon barley in it and the drink tasted foul, bleaching was the only thing that shifted the residue (wtf it is god knows any bio-chemists on the board?) anyway I switched to Vimto with sugar and the only thing I get now is the sugar residue. I'm sure it has additives in it but I won't be going back to NAS.

I used to drink lager a lot but about 15 years ago discovered IPA and ESB and that was that. The lack of gas is a game changer for my wind.

You lot have made me thirsty now.

Corona is perfect ice cold on a hot day by the pool/beach (in Mexico...) but you could say that for nearly all beers.

Wouldn't drink it out of choice.

Unfortunately mate i took delivery of these yesterday and was given the 4.8% version with the cheap stick on labels even though the advert says they are the 5.1% abv originals.

fair play to them , i contacted them and they refunded me and issued an apology saying that their website was incorrect so ended up with a free case!.

They said they would update the website but they still haven't. I'd imagine if anyone bought them today while the website is still showing the wrong version on Mahou, they could get a refund on them like i did and get a free case of beers because they are not as advertised.

Great shout on the Menabrea Si, i'll be having that one at my wedding bar next year.

You are correct, Mein Herr.

I spent a couple months over in Bavaria / Franconia (don't call them Bavarians!) and this was something they went on about on an almost hourly basis. 'Dorse, Englischer food is awful. It is full of chemical scheisse that would never be permitted here. Now eat this raw sausage meat with onion and pickles on black bread...'

And with a good Weissbeir it was fcking great. Now try the same experiment in Blighty. I'll save you a seat in A&E, next to the bloke who was wearing a loose-fitting dressing gown and 'slipped and fell on it'...

'What do we want? We don't know! When do we want it? Now!'
